Chapter 183 - Her Silence

Daphne leaned back against the cushions, her hands folded in her lap.

She had kept her composure leaving the Thomas Manor, but Emma's words clung to her.

By the time the carriage rolled to a stop, her smile had grown tired.

In her chamberlice was waiting. "Your Highness," she greeted with a small curtsy.

Her brow furrowed as soon as she caught Daphne's expression.

"Help me change," Daphne murmured,"I'd like to retire early."

Alice blinked in surprise; she wasn't waiting for Alaric returned, but she said nothing, only obeyed.

Once her gown was removed and a simple nightdress slipped over her shoulders, Daphne let out a sigh and sank into the vast bed.

"Should I bring supper, my lady?" Alice asked gently.

"No. I've no appetite."

Alice hesitated, then nodded. "Rest well, my lady."

She dimmed the lamps and left, closing the door with care.

Daphne lay still in the darkness, her heart still knotted by Emma's bitterness.
