Chapter 6 - The Heir

"What did you want to talk about, father?" Laplace asked out of genuine curiosity, his voice calm and polite to show respect to his father.

Is it about the thieves?

"I want you to be my heir. Take over the kingdom after my death." The King said, as if he was announcing some great news. He doesn't make eye contact with Laplace while saying this.

Laplace already had accepted this. He always thought he was going to be the heir. A sense of pride filled him, but he immediately calmed down and started speaking.

"Is that it? If so, I will be proud to become the next king of—"No, that's not all." The King interrupted, his voice somewhat annoyed that Laplace would assume such things.

Laplace focused on the king's words. What else? Is it about the parade?

"If you are going to be the king of this city, you must know some things." The King said with a classy tone in his voice.

The King felt hesitant before stroking his beard and readjusting his position on the throne, smiling slightly.

"Have you ever heard of angels?" The King said, making eye contact for the first time with his son. His eyes look empty.

Laplace's eyes enlightened and he fixed his posture. Should I act clueless? I should. I don't want him to ask about the Demon.

"No, I can't say I have. Why?"

The King cleared his throat then spoke.

"Do you see anything behind me?" He asked calmly, as if expecting something from Laplace.

The king squinted his eyes and focused on Laplace's reaction. As if suspecting him, or as if waiting for something.

Does he know I can see angels? If so, I shouldn't act like I don't know. It would only cause more trouble.

"Yes.. I do. Is that an angel?" Laplace asked curiously, pointing at the Angel next to the King.

The king's angel squinted her eyes at the sight of Laplace and whispered to the king. The king let out a little smirk and nodded his head.

The King looked around while on his throne, to see if anyone was eavesdropping. There was nobody. With a quieter tone, he replied.

"Yes. This is my angel. Her name is Benevolent. You have an angel too. She will reach out to you in soon time." The King said, his voice ambitious and over-the-top.

Keeping the demon a secret is the best course of action. It's best if only I know about this mysterious being.

Laplace tried his best to keep the conversation going, after all, the King was knowledgeable and Laplace wanted more information about the Angels.

"How do I get my angel?" The young prince tried to put on a confused and interested act. But he spoke boldly.

"Once your body and mind are capable of handling the power, the angel will come to you." The King said calmly, he was smirking slightly. But then he stopped.

The King thought for a moment. He sighed and cleared his throat.

"You are going to go on an adventure with traveling merchants. You will keep them safe by all means. By the time you come back, you will become significantly more powerful. At least that is what should happen." He spoke calmly, his voice somewhat imposing to Laplace.

Laplace took a moment to process everything, and then thought about his current situation.

So I'm going on an adventure? Not bad, that sounds enjoyable. I can put all my training to the test.

"I'll be happy to. Is there anything else I need to do?" Laplace asked calmly, keeping the confused act up.

The King thought for a moment and sat up straight. He spoke confidently.

"No, that's all. Get ready, you will leave in one week." The King said calmly.

Laplace felt relieved that he did not have to talk about the demon. Thats a relief! I wouldn't know how to explain the devil.

"Then I shall take my leave." Laplace bowed once more and turned around, ready to leave. But as soon as he took one step, he heard a booming voice behind him.

"Wait. One more thing…" The King said, his voice high-sounding and loud enough to catch Laplace's attention. He seemed to have changed his mind.

Laplace was startled by the unexpected reply. He turned back around to the King sitting on the throne.

"Y-yes..?" Laplace gulped hard, as if he swallowed a rock.

"I want to give you this. It is handed down to the prince of every generation of our family." The King said somewhat proudly.

The King stood up and reached behind his throne. He pulled out a long wooden box and handed it to Laplace. "Open it whenever you feel you are ready. Don't overthink it, it's nothing too unique." The King said with a subtle smile and tilted his head.

Laplace looked at the box then at the King. "Thank you, father." He took the wooden box from the King and walked out the main room.

What could this be?
