Chapter 4 - A cup of coffee

Renee's POV

It's finally the D-day, Monday, when I officially start to work as a secretary. The morning sun looked brighter than usual, the warm rays pierced through my window, lighting up my room with a radiant glow. I squinted, momentarily blinded by the brightness, but couldn't help being captivated by its beauty. The sun's gentle warmth on my skin was like a gentle cares. Beckoning me to start the day.

I hesitantly sat up, rubbing the sleep from my eye, and swung my legs over the side of my bed. My gaze drifted towards the window, where the sun's rays across the dust particles, creating a mesmerizing display of light and shadow, for a moment, I forgot about the long day ahead and simply basked in the calmness of the morning.

But reality soon crept back in, reminding me that I had to get ready for work. I sighed reluctantly tearing my gaze from the sun's display.

I quickly took my bath and prepared myself something small to eat for breakfast, because I was not so sure if I would be able to eat at all when I get to the office because of anxiety.

The journey to the company was a really short one, as I was so excited to resume my new job, that time looked like it was moving so fast. I got to work exactly ten minutes to nine, giving me enough time to admire my surroundings and my new office which was very close to the CEO's office.

As I stepped into the office, I was captivated by the sight before me, the office walls were painted a warm beige. Frames hanged on the walls left and right adding a beautiful texture to the office. Everywhere looked so beautiful that never in a thousand years will I have thought I would be able to work here.

The office was calm and quiet, Soft lights shone down on the desks, the big windows showed the city outside and the conference room had glass walls , like a fish tank.

The smell of coffee coming from the break room gave my nose a nice boost.

Wait…. coffee?

"Oh shit!!!" I exclaimed as I remembered what the CEO had asked me to do every morning, making him a cup of coffee.

I immediately checked the time on the wall clock that was hanged right above me and at that moment I think the breath in my lungs escaped completely. The time was ten minutes past nine, just ten minutes before CEO Logan comes into the office.

How long have I been staring at the office? I quickly dropped all I was holding and rushed into the break room.

There were different types of coffee arranged on the pavement, with cups of different sizes and lots of other fancy stuff, that I had no idea of.

"Now what was his coffee order again?" I muttered to myself, as I had totally forgotten his exact order.

This was the moment I knew I was totally fucked.

"Oh my, what was it? Was it a shot of espresso or two?" I asked the question as if there was anyone around to even answer me.

I quickly took a cup, added a shot of espresso because no sane person drinks coffee with two shots of espresso, except if you are old. i added two tea spoons of sugar and cream, that's what he said right?

By the time I was done it was eighteen minutes past nine, just two minutes to go.

The CEO entered into the office exactly twenty minutes past nine, not even a minute late and the first thing he asked for was his cup of coffee.

I hesitantly gave him the cup of coffee, not sure of what I made, my hands shaking in the process and spilling a little bit of content on the floor, I immediately apologized and went out of his office to call in the cleaner to clean the mess up.

I had not even left the door when he called me back asking me this question.

"At what time did you make this coffee?" my heart skipped a beat, it felt like my whole world was on pause and it was only I and him in it alone

"Five minutes before you came in sir" I replied with shaky breaths, my hands becoming sweaty from the pressure.

He looked at me and eyed me from head to toe "you are lying, my coffee is still damn hot".

I gulped, feeling the pressure move down to my legs making me immediately weak.

Before I could answer him, he waved his hands for me to leave his office and took a sip of the coffee.

I could see his face contoured in disgust as he took that one sip.

"How many shots of espresso and tea spoons of sugar did you put in this?" he asked me.

Did I get the order wrong? I was super sure I did the right thing.

"A shot of espresso and two tea spoons of sugar" I replied him, curious to know why he was asking.

"Damn it! I asked for two shots of espresso and three tea spoons of sugar Renee, can't you do just that? I thought you worked as a caretaker, don't you take care of people in need? Why would you forget something so easy? can't you remember things or do you sometimes have memory loss?" he screamed at me.

At that moment, I could not understand exactly why he was reacting this way. It was just a little mistake, everyone makes mistakes.

I felt pure disgust immediately. I could not just pinpoint what exactly I did so wrong, that he had to talk to me in that matter, or was it because I was just a mere secretary? Was it because I was not in his league and he felt like he could talk to me anyhow because he was the CEO of a big corporation?

Damn him!

"And what exactly do you mean by that?" I asked him that question with anger laced vividly in my tone.

He seemed quite taken aback that I talked to him in that manner, but I did not seem to care at that point. All I wanted from him was for him to answer my questions and tell me what exactly he meant.

I looked at him, this time moving closer to him "I ask you again, what exactly do you mean by that statement?"

When it did not seem like he was going to answer, I added "don't you make mistakes? what exactly warranted you to talk about my past job and ask me if I don't remember things? Even going as far as asking me about memory loss?"

"on a second thought, who the hell drinks coffee with two shots of espresso? Are you old? And also it is just a cup of coffee, you can simply ask me to make another one since it is part of my job, no need to be rude Mr. Arrogant" I said to him screaming at the top of my voice.

If my voice could bring the whole building down, we would have been crushed by now.

He looked so shocked and surprised, his mouth slightly left agape.

When I was done screaming at the top of my voice and pouring out my anger and frustration on him, I walked out of his office into the break room, making another coffee for him, this time making sure to put the right order. Two shots of espresso, three tea spoons of sugar and cream. I also made a cappuccino for myself, because I knew this was going to be a long day and I needed it if I was going to get through the day.

After I was done with the coffee order, I took his coffee to his office, where he was seated down on his sit with is elbows on his table.

"Here's your cup of coffee Mr. Arrogant"

"Oh sorry I meant sir" I said sarcastically, also rolling my eyes.

I dropped the cup of coffee on his table and proceeded to leave his office before he could say anything to me, I was not ready to listen to someone who is very rude and has no manners.
