The battlefield was a storm of smoke, fire, and shrieking chitter. The mock training grounds—vast concrete walls lined with fortified gates—now echoed with the real chaos of combat. The recruits were scattered across the broken earth, rifles cracking, swords flashing, boots pounding in frantic rhythm.
Kaiju blood stained the ground, thick and acrid, hissing where it touched steel.
Reno Ichikawa ducked under a lunging Ant-Type, his rifle barking two controlled bursts. The rounds punched into its carapace, but not deep enough. The monster shrieked, mandibles clicking. Reno gritted his teeth, planting his feet as he drew his blade.
"Come on then!" he shouted, swinging in an upward arc that tore through its softer underside. The kaiju fell twitching, collapsing with a thud that rattled his bones.
Kafka Hibino stumbled up behind him, panting, sweat matting his hair. His blade was trembling in his hands. "Th-that's number two for you, right?"
"Yeah." Reno shot him a grin. "Don't fall behind, senpai."
Kafka's chest heaved, but his eyes were sharp. "Focus on the joints, the seams in the armor. Abdomen's softest—slice up, not down."
Two rookies nearby—one trembling, the other wide-eyed—followed his advice. They slashed low, beneath the armored plates, and the kaiju dropped instantly. Their shock turned into awe.
Kafka gave a weak laugh. "See? Told you."
From the command deck above, banks of monitors tracked every movement, every heartbeat. Technicians barked updates.
"Recruit Ichikawa—heart rate spiking, stamina holding!"
"Recruit Hibino—erratic, but situational awareness increasing."
Ikaruga, the gruff data officer, scowled at the readings. "That one percent rookie shouldn't be this reliable. Something doesn't add up."
Captain Mina Ashiro stood with her arms folded, eyes cold and unwavering on the battlefield. Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina leaned against the railing, his grin never wavering.
"See that, Captain?" he drawled. "Your rookies aren't just running around—they're building rhythm."
Mina didn't answer, her gaze shifting to where the fight was loudest.
There—two figures cut a path straight through the chaos.
Akira Kurogiri and Kikoru Shinomiya.
Kikoru moved like a whirlwind, her blade cleaving through Ant-Types in sharp, merciless arcs. She counted aloud, voice ringing over the din.
"Sixteen! Seventeen!"
Every kill was crisp, decisive, and brimming with Shinomiya pride.
Akira was her shadow, yet her equal—precise where she was fierce, fluid where she was rigid. His strikes were surgical, his footwork effortless. Where Kikoru tore, Akira redirected. Where she forced openings, he exploited them with clean finishers.
The rookies couldn't look away.
"Are they… working together?"
"They don't even have to talk!"
"No—look at their rhythm. They're reading each other."
Kikoru shot him a glare mid-swing. "Don't think I'll slow down for you, Kurogiri!"
Akira smirked faintly, parrying a mandible strike so smoothly it looked rehearsed. "Wouldn't dream of it."
[Ravan: Synchronization detected. Efficiency at 87%. Host capable of solo elimination. Suppression continues?]
Akira's eyes narrowed slightly, though his face betrayed nothing. Not yet. This fight isn't mine to steal.
The ground cracked, a shadow blotting out the sunlight.
The Daikaiju Ant Variant rose above the swarm, towering with grotesque bulk. Its mandibles clashed with a sound like grinding steel, its multifaceted eyes reflecting every gunflash below.
Rookies froze at the sight.
"Oh god…"
"It's huge—!"
The Variant's shriek rattled teeth. Then it charged.
Kikoru was the first to move. She sprinted forward, unflinching. "Don't just stand there! This one's mine!"
Akira followed, blade low, his movements calm even as the ground quaked under the monster's charge.
The clash was thunder. Kikoru leapt high, her blade carving down into the beast's shoulder joint. It reeled back with a screech. Akira slid beneath its mandibles, steel flashing upward in a precise thrust that tore through softer tissue beneath its head.
It convulsed, screeching, but still raged.
Kikoru pressed in again, her strikes furious. "Eighteen! Nineteen!"
Akira pivoted beside her, blocking a swipe that would've crushed her ribs. Sparks exploded where steel met mandible. His blade sang as he redirected the weight.
Their rhythm locked, two voices in the same storm.
[Ravan: Host efficiency spiking. Opportunity for absolute kill confirmed. Absorption protocols ready—restrained.]
Akira ignored it, twisting his blade free and slashing across one eye. The monster reeled. Kikoru capitalized, driving her sword down through its head with a roar.
The Variant shuddered. Akira rammed his blade through its chest in the same motion, pinning it down. Together, they drove steel deeper until the shrieking stopped.
The giant collapsed, dust exploding skyward.
For a heartbeat, silence.
Then the recruits erupted.
"They killed it—together!"
"Insane…!"
Even the aides on the deck faltered at their monitors.
"Heart rates synchronized… movement efficiency beyond prediction…"
Mina's eyes narrowed. "Not just strength. Compatibility."
Beside her, Hoshina grinned wide. "Guess the brats found a dance partner."
On the ground, Reno came skidding to a stop, chest heaving. "You two were insane out there!"
Kafka stumbled after him, drenched in sweat, his grin shaky. "Glad I didn't die… again."
Iharu cupped his hands around his mouth, shouting at the top of his lungs. "Shinomiya! You're a beast! And Kurogiri—stop pretending to be human!"
Akira smirked faintly, sheathing his blade. Kikoru huffed, glaring at him—but behind her fury, a flicker of acknowledgment burned.
[Ravan: Suppression complete. Result acceptable. Audience perception—balance of power reinforced.]
Above, the control deck's chatter stilled as new alarms blinked red.
Higarashi stiffened, voice dropping. "Captain… new signal. Multiple clusters. Bigger. Fast-moving."
Mina's eyes hardened. "Show me."
On the monitors, shapes flickered in the dust beyond the gates—vast, moving shadows.
The recruits on the ground cheered still, ignorant.
But the veterans on the deck knew.
This was only the beginning.
To be continued…
