Chapter 20: Shadows of the Past Revealed

The city was quiet now, but the weight of the night's battles hung heavily in the air. Le Wai and Mei Lin stood atop a rooftop, overlooking the plaza where the confrontation had taken place.

"You said he knows my past," Le Wai murmured, his voice tinged with both curiosity and unease. "How much does he know?"

Mei Lin turned to him, her expression serious. "More than you think. The mastermind isn't just an enemy—he's tied to the choices you made years ago. The lives you saved… the ones you couldn't. He remembers everything, and he's using it against you."

Le Wai's fists clenched. Memories surged: the betrayal of trusted allies, the city he failed to protect, the promises broken in the heat of survival. "I thought I could leave it behind," he said quietly. "I thought I could move forward."

Mei Lin shook her head. "The past never truly leaves us. But it can make us stronger—if we face it, instead of letting it control us."

Le Wai looked at her, searching for certainty. "And you… why are you helping me?"

Her eyes softened, but her tone remained resolute. "Because I've been fighting him too. He threatens more than just you. I know his methods, his weaknesses… and I know how dangerous he can be if left unchecked."

Le Wai nodded, the tension in his shoulders easing slightly. "Then we fight together," he said. "No matter what it takes."

From the shadows, a whisper carried on the wind, chilling yet familiar. Le Wai's gaze sharpened. "He's coming back," he said.

Mei Lin adjusted her stance, ready. "Then we'll be ready for him. Together."

For the first time in a long while, Le Wai felt a glimmer of hope. The battles ahead would be brutal, and the truths about his past would challenge him in ways he couldn't yet imagine. But with Mei Lin by his side, he knew he wasn't facing the darkness alone.

As the night deepened, the city seemed to pulse with anticipation. The mastermind was planning his next move—and when he struck, nothing would be the same.

Le Wai's resolve hardened. The fight wasn't just about survival anymore. It was about reclaiming the past, confronting the shadows, and shaping the future.
