Chapter 1 - INTRODUCTION

"In the Beginning"

She ran faster than her thin frame should have allowed, her legs carrying her with desperate, frantic speed. Where to? She didn't know—only that stopping meant death.

She tore past the weeping willows, through orchids twisted by the cruelty of night, across the black waters of the Southernham River, and into the cemetery, where even the owls were too afraid to hoot. Only when she stumbled through her own front door did she believe she was safe—safe from the evil of men.

But the shadow that followed had come to prove her wrong, to remind her that no one could escape his reach.
