Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Blades Against the Dark

The cavern was a storm of shadows.

The Abyssal Shade's roar shook the ground as countless lesser wraiths poured from its body, surrounding the four warriors in a choking tide. Each shadow moved like liquid fear, clawing at their minds as much as their flesh.

Reinhardt's blade carved through them, but for every one slain, two more rose. His body screamed for rest, his arms heavy with fatigue, yet he kept striking. If I stop now… it's over.

Elira fought at his side, her spear glowing faintly as if resisting the darkness itself. She spun and thrust, her strikes fluid, graceful—yet her breaths grew ragged.

Callen, blood dripping from a cut across his brow, gritted his teeth and fought like a man possessed. "I won't fall here! Not again!" His blade cleaved through three shadows in one desperate swing, his voice hoarse from shouting.

Alden, still bleeding from his earlier wound, dragged himself upright, axe in hand. His body shook, but his eyes burned. "You'll have to kill me to stop me!" He slammed the axe into the ground, releasing a shockwave that blasted back a wave of shadows, buying them seconds of air.

Seconds. That was all.

The Abyssal Shade loomed above them, its voice a chorus of whispers that clawed at their souls.

"Your strength means nothing… your bonds will break… hope is an illusion…"

Reinhardt staggered, clutching his chest as the voices pressed down on him. He saw flashes—his failures, his doubts, every moment he had been powerless. The weight nearly brought him to his knees.

But then—he felt it.

The hands of his comrades. Elira's defiance. Callen's redemption. Alden's unyielding will. Their voices echoed louder than the whispers.

Stand, Reinhardt.

Something inside him stirred. A warmth, deep and ancient, like a fire refusing to die. His sword trembled—and then ignited with light. Not flame, not lightning—something deeper. A radiance born from sheer will.

The shadows recoiled.

Elira gasped, her eyes widening. "Reinhardt… your blade…"

He lifted it high, the glow cutting through the suffocating dark. His voice roared, drowning the whispers:

"I am not alone! And as long as we stand together—despair will never win!"

With a cry that shook the cavern, Reinhardt charged. His glowing blade cleaved straight through the Abyssal Shade's claw, black ichor spraying. The beast screamed, writhing, its body shattering under the assault.

The others followed his lead. Callen struck from the right, Elira from the left, Alden from behind. Four warriors, four wills, one strike—driving their blades into the heart of the Abyss.

The cavern exploded with light.

The Shade wailed, its body crumbling into ash, until only silence remained.

For the first time since entering the Trial… the darkness receded.

Reinhardt fell to one knee, gasping, his glowing blade fading back to steel. The others collapsed nearby, battered but alive.

Elira's lips curved into a weak smile. "We… we did it."

Reinhardt looked at his trembling hands. That light… that power… it had answered him when despair tried to claim him.

But deep inside, he knew—this was only the beginning.
