Chapter 50 - 50: The Purpose Of Learning

"Who are the target users for the Anesthetic Spray?"

"Wizards, Muggles, magical creatures…"

"Wrong. Without magical protection, Muggles would be instantly paralyzed by this Potion."

"Oh, right."

Harry quickly jotted down notes while answering Lucien's questions.

As soon as he finished writing, Lucien spoke again.

"What is the usage taboo for the Deodorizing Elixir?"

"Uh, I… I don't remember."

"It must not come into contact with open flame, or its effect will be no less than a Confringo."

"…"

The more he taught, the more Lucien realized how serious the problem was.

Harry did have a talent for Potions, but it was mostly evident in hands-on brewing.

When it came to theoretical knowledge, especially detailed Potion usage, he had trouble remembering.

It turned out the kid had only memorized the general effects and just splashed them on people's faces whenever he needed them.

No, he couldn't let him go out like this.

Lucien thought that Harry wouldn't hinder his own magical progress, but he would definitely ruin his reputation in the field of education.

Potion brewing would remain focused on practical exercises, but as for theory… memorization, dictation, homework, exams…

For no apparent reason, Harry—still furiously scribbling—suddenly felt a chill.

After finally finishing his tutoring session, Harry rubbed his wrist, stiff from all the writing.

"Lucien, thank you for healing me yesterday... That transparent liquid must be really expensive. I'll repay you…"

Harry originally intended to offer Galleons, but he remembered Lucien's earlier words—not to insult him with money—and besides, Lucien didn't seem to lack money.

"I-I know I can't give you money.. Uh, then I'll go to my Gringotts vault and find a few more Potter books. It's to thank you for your help after all! Oh, right, Hagrid already went to Gringotts for me. He should be able to bring back the books we talked about today."

Lucien nodded, not refusing.

It wasn't difficult to make the Little Qilin spit, but the value of qilin saliva itself was undeniable.

And judging by yesterday's results, Lumen's saliva had the ability to regenerate flesh and bone—far more potent than the local qilin saliva described in books.

Hmm, it seems the Little Qilin is also a continuous treasure trove.

He could also research the effects of other materials from Lumen, such as shed scales or hair...

Speaking of which, could he trade those for ingredients with Snape? He remembered that Snape's office was filled with all sorts of valuable items.

"Lucien, did I do something wrong last night?"

Harry's sudden question caught Lucien a bit off guard.

"Oh? Why do you ask?"

Harry lowered his head, looking dejected.

"If I had just run away then, maybe none of this would have happened... Luckily, I was the one who got bitten and not Ron or Hermione. It was because I was showing off…"

Faced with Harry's self-blame, Lucien didn't offer direct comfort. Instead, he asked an unrelated question:

"What do you think is the purpose of learning knowledge?"

Harry didn't quite understand why Lucien asked that.

"Is it to make myself smarter?"

Lucien first nodded, then shook his head.

"Learning knowledge can be to understand the world, to solve problems, or to arm one's spirit… But knowledge should never be used to show off, or to put oneself and friends in danger."

At first, Harry listened in a daze, but by the end, he had lowered his head in embarrassment again.

Seeing the future savior in this state, Lucien chuckled softly.

"However, your courage to protect your companions in that moment was absolutely right. Courage is, by its very nature, humanity's greatest anthem."

Harry looked up, listening intently to Lucien's words.

"Of course, besides courage and knowledge, sometimes you also have to learn when to make a Jojo retreat!"

Though he didn't quite understand, Harry nodded firmly.

"All right, Harry, memorize all of this first. I'll give you a dictation when I get back."

After assigning Harry the memorization task, Lucien left the cabin.

Venturing a bit deeper toward the edge of the Forbidden Forest, Lucien summoned the Little Qilin.

"Come on, let's go see what magical creatures you've found."

Ten minutes later.

Lucien, still using a combination of the Illusion Charm and Cloak Potion, recorded a group of magical creatures not far ahead:

Diricawls.

They were plump, flightless birds covered in downy feathers.

One of the Diricawls Lucien was observing suddenly vanished, then instantly reappeared a short distance away.

Oh, an interesting ability.

The quill continued writing:

They can perform short-distance, but extremely fast, teleportation.

At this point, Lucien recalled something amusing he had read in a book.

These magical creatures, Diricawls, were actually documented in the Muggle world as well.

However, Muggles referred to them as "Dodo birds."

Yes, the same Dodo birds believed to be extinct.

Because these birds could vanish at will, Muggles never knew the truth and assumed they had hunted them to extinction.

Ironically, this misunderstanding helped raise awareness of animal protection among Muggles, leading them to begin reducing excessive hunting and slaughter.

So the Wizarding Confederation felt there was no harm in Muggles not knowing that Diricawls still existed.

Looking at the cheerfully playing, plump little birds, Lucien thought of the records he had read in books before discovering the magical world, and the skeletons displayed in museums.

Hmm, not being discovered might actually be a good thing.

After recording the characteristics and habits of this second magical creature, he also needed to measure their physical data.

Lucien paused for a moment, planning to use this opportunity to test something.

He wondered whether Fang and Fawkes's friendliness toward him was due to his uniqueness as the Qilin's master—and if that same effect would work on other animals.

He waved his wand to dispel the Illusion Charm and simultaneously removed the Cloak Potion from his body.

Lucien's presence was immediately revealed to the Diricawls.

With a whoosh—!

All of them vanished.

Lucien waited patiently for a few seconds.

One by one, the group of Diricawls gradually returned to their original spot.

From about ten meters away, they cautiously observed Lucien, who had suddenly appeared.

Looking at the way those fat little birds peeked around, Lucien understood something.

He really did cause animals to feel an affinity for him now—otherwise, the Diricawls wouldn't have returned after fleeing.

They weren't foolish deer that would come back just to check what the danger was.

Hmm, as wild magical creatures, this group of Diricawls likely had stronger instincts and vigilance.

It was best not to approach them recklessly, or they might be frightened away for good.

If his trait of animal affinity truly came from the Qilin, then...

"Lumen."

Lumen's little figure quickly appeared beside Lucien.

The moment the Qilin appeared, the group of plump little birds instantly jumped in surprise.

But after carefully inspecting Lucien again, one Diricawl cautiously hopped closer.

And soon after, the rest of the Diricawls came fluttering over one after another.

Most of them circled around Little Qilin, and occasionally a bolder one would rub against its leg.

Only one Diricawl chick stood in front of Lucien, its pure, round eyes curiously staring up at him.

Lucien knelt down and gently picked up this "extinct" Dodo bird.

Hello there, little one.
