Axel didn't answer right away.
He simply tightened his arm around her and pressed a light kiss to the top of her head.
"Then let's keep it that way."
The simplicity of his words made her heart swell.
For a moment, the world outside didn't exist. It was just the two of them. Just quiet warmth and a promise that didn't need to be spoken.
She closed her eyes again, smiling against his chest. 'Maybe this is what happiness feels like,' she thought.
Minutes passed like seconds.
The steady sound of his heartbeat almost lulled her back to sleep, until—
'Knock. Knock. Knock.' Sounds snapped her eyes open.
And, a bright little voice called from the other side of the door.
"Mommy! Daddy! Are you guys awake yet?"
Evelyn abruptly sat so fast, "Oh my God... Oliver!" she whispered, but loud enough for Axel to hear it.
Axel rubbed his neck, fighting back a laugh, looking at how panicked Evelyn was now.
"What time is it?" she asked, panic creeping into her voice.
