Chapter 23 - The Lawyer

At noon, outside the Osborn Company, the students gathered after their tour.

"Osborn Company is so boring. They just kept telling us about the company's history and all sorts of biological experiments. Spiders, lizards, and white mice – who wants to listen to that?" one student complained, drawing nods of agreement from those around him.

"By the way, where's Mr. James? He went out for a bit, but he hasn't come back yet."

"I don't know..."

Listening to the conversations of his classmates, Peter Parker shook his slightly dazed head and quietly left the crowd, heading home.

"Name?"

"Bai Ye."

"Gender?"

"Male."

"Home address?"

At NYPD Headquarters, Bai Ye, changed into clean clothes, sat in a chair and calmly faced the police questioning.

When he killed those robbers, he had already prepared himself. If they really sentenced him to a year or two for killing, then he felt that New York was too urbanized and needed a retro makeover.

With his current tonnage of strength, not to mention going head-to-head with modern weaponry, escaping prison would be a piece of cake. He could then hide and train for three to five years, and before Thanos even stepped in a decade from now, he would have already reduced New York's population by more than 50%.

Outside the interrogation room, unaware of Bai Ye's intentions, Police Commissioner George was flipping through Bai Ye's past.

His parents were Chinese immigrants who were ruined by gambling and soon found dead in the streets, their organs missing.

Bai Ye's background was much cleaner. He simply went to school, recently spent a lot of money on a gym membership, and then started skipping classes. The reason he was caught at the bank today was because he was skipping class.

According to the records, Bai Ye had no criminal record and seemed to be completely clean. But a little thought revealed a problem: how did Bai Ye, with no family support, survive these past few years? He didn't have any part-time job records either.

"According to the records, you currently have no job. How did you obtain so much cash?" the officer in the room asked.

"As everyone knows, I'm very handsome, so someone gives me money. Makes sense, right?" Bai Ye said. "Besides, this clearly has nothing to do with the robbery case. I can refuse to answer these questions."

The officer in front of him paused, looked up at Bai Ye, and then silently lowered his head, unable to refute.

"Knock, knock, knock!" Just as the officer was about to continue questioning, the closed door was knocked, forcing him to stop his work.

Opening the door, the officer saw George standing outside, followed by a man wearing sunglasses, using a cane, and with his limbs bound in bandages.

"Who is he, Chief?" the officer asked.

Bai Ye was surprised to see the visitor. Although the man was wearing a mask at the time, he recognized him immediately. It was none other than Daredevil, the one he'd sent to the hospital a few days prior. He wondered why this guy was here.

"This is Bai Ye's lawyer," George explained, also confused as to why Bai Ye, a person from such a poor background, would have a lawyer immediately after the incident.

And this lawyer looked miserable, like he'd just been released from the hospital.

"My client is first and foremost a victim, and then acted in self-defense. You have no reason to detain my client at the precinct," Matthew said to George righteously.

Three hours later, Bai Ye and Matthew emerged from NYPD Headquarters. Although he was out of the precinct, Bai Ye's activities were temporarily restricted to New York City as a deep participant in the robbery case.

Furthermore, he might need to be summoned for further investigation if there were any new developments in the case.

"Why did you want to be my lawyer?" Bai Ye turned to look at Matthew beside him on the street. "Shouldn't you want to put me in jail?"

"Can a prison hold you?" Matthew asked back. "Are you going to escape and seek revenge on society? Create another criminal like Bullseye?"

"I understand your background. I don't want to cultivate another criminal, even though you've already dipped a toe in. However, there's still hope for redemption if you turn over a new leaf."

"I thought superheroes were all about eliminating evil. I'm surprised you're so understanding," Bai Ye said with a chuckle, hands in his pockets.

"Consider this my thanks for you not killing me. You have incredible physical abilities. Are you interested in becoming a superhero? I could train you, just like my master trained me," Matthew said slowly.

He hoped to use his own example to guide the young man before him toward the right path.

"You? Train me?" Bai Ye sized him up, looking at his bandaged hands and feet. "Don't forget who put you in the hospital."

"That was a sneak attack! Your attacks are all brute force. With my skills, I can definitely be your teacher. If we fought again, I wouldn't lose," Matthew said seriously. If his injuries weren't still healing, he'd have wanted to fight Bai Ye again.

"Then how come your invincible skills didn't detect my sneak attack?" Bai Ye scoffed. He'd rather use that time to build muscle, using raw power to overcome everything.

"Let's leave it at that. Thanks for coming here to be my lawyer, even though you're injured. You can go now. I'll contact you if I have any legal issues," Bai Ye said dismissively, sounding like a gold digger who had just squeezed the last bit of value out of a simp.

In Matthew's helpless expression, Bai Ye turned without a second thought at the intersection and headed towards the gym. He pulled out his phone as he walked, finding dozens of missed calls.

The callers included teachers, the principal, and various classmates he used to know.

Bai Ye walked home, scrolling through the numbers and selecting James's to call back.

The call connected after two rings, and a hesitant voice came through, "Bai Ye, are you… at the police station?"

"No, I just answered a few questions and left. I'm on my way home," Bai Ye explained, then continued, "Teacher, as you know, the situation is a bit complicated. So, I want to take a month off to rest at home."

Facing Bai Ye's request, James's attitude was extremely gentle, completely devoid of his earlier displeasure, "A month? I don't have the authority for that, but I'll talk to the principal for you. Just rest at home for now."

"Thank you, teacher," Bai Ye gratefully replied, then hung up.

Throughout the whole conversation, the teacher neither asked why he skipped class to go to the bank nor mentioned Bai Ye killing anyone. It was as if he knew nothing about it. After all, being a teacher was just a job, and it was best not to get involved in such matters.

Turning off his phone, Bai Ye, feeling the itch of idleness in his bones, headed to the gym.
