Chapter 134 - Chapter 134 – False Miracles

The morning sun glinted across the small village of Lirhaven, casting long shadows over its cobbled streets. A crowd had gathered in the central square, murmuring with anticipation. The child calling themselves saviour stood at the centre, their tiny frame illuminated by hope and expectation.

Shino Taketsu watched from the shadows, Soo-min beside him, noting every detail. Word had reached him that the child had begun performing "miracles" — simple tricks disguised as divine intervention — to strengthen their hold over the people.

"They call it a blessing," Soo-min said quietly, scanning the crowd. "But it's nothing more than deceit."

Shino's gaze was unwavering. "Deception wears many masks. Today we see one; tomorrow, another. We must prepare for both without revealing ourselves too soon."

---

The child raised their hands, and a small fountain of water appeared seemingly from nowhere. The villagers gasped and cheered. A few held their hands in prayer, convinced of the miracle.

Shino observed calmly. "Every trick has a mechanism. Every illusion leaves a trace of truth beneath it. All it takes is careful observation."

Soo-min nodded. "The people will not question it. They want to believe."

"Yes," Shino replied. "And belief without reason is fragile — once doubt enters, it can grow quietly, like a seed waiting for water."

---

He moved closer to the crowd, blending with villagers and listening to their interpretations. Some attributed the "miracle" to divine will, others to the child's inherent wisdom. Yet small cracks appeared: a child whispered to their parent that they had seen the child use sleight of hand; a merchant noticed the hidden water channels beneath the fountain.

Shino smiled faintly. "Truth often hides in plain sight. It is not destroyed by wonder, only revealed by attention."

The impostor noticed him watching, though they could not place who he was. Their confidence remained, but tension flickered in their gestures — a twitch of a hand, a slight falter in posture.

---

Soo-min whispered, "Do you intend to expose them now?"

Shino shook his head. "Not yet. Force will only provoke resistance. We guide with subtlety. Let them perform their wonders, while we let the seeds of doubt take root."

He engaged with the villagers, asking measured questions:

"Does the miracle benefit all equally, or only those present?"

"Are there natural explanations for what you see?"

"How would you know the child's intentions if the results were reversed?"

Slowly, murmurs of reflection spread among the crowd. The child sensed unease, yet tried to maintain composure, their smile slightly strained.

By evening, the "miracles" had concluded for the day. The villagers remained loyal outwardly, but private conversations now questioned the validity of the child's power. Small gestures betrayed doubt: a hesitant glance, a whispered warning, a cautious inquiry.

Shino and Soo-min retreated silently into the shadows, satisfied. "Even the brightest false light casts shadows," Shino said quietly. "And it is in those shadows that the truth can quietly grow."

---

The impostor's influence remained strong, but the first fractures had appeared. Shino knew patience, observation, and subtle guidance were the only tools to reveal reality without inciting chaos. Lies could perform wonders for a day, but enduring wisdom would always outlast them.

As the night settled over Lirhaven, Shino gazed at the distant horizon. "The world seeks saviours, false and true. But the path of understanding is never revealed by spectacle alone. It requires subtlety, persistence, and the quiet light of reason."
