Chapter 123 - Hydra's Conspiracy

Fury threw the chair in his hand fiercely at the assassin, delaying for half a second. He seized the opportunity to rush towards the window, pulled out a small flashbang from his waist, pulled the pin, and threw it on the ground. The flash exploded, and intense white light instantly filled the entire room. The assassin reflexively raised his hand to shield his eyes, but Fury had already broken through the window, leaping into the garbage truck below with a muffled thud. The assassin stood by the window, looked down, and did not pursue, simply opening his communicator: "Target has left, he did not get the data. Request next instruction."

After falling into the garbage pile, Fury quickly got up, clutching his waist and wincing in pain. He fumbled for the communicator in his pocket, switched to an encrypted channel, his voice low and urgent: "Hill, emergency evacuation, I've been attacked. Lock onto my position, pick me up."

A few minutes later, a black SUV drove into the alley entrance. Hill leaned out from the driver's seat, her expression serious: "Director, get in."

As Fury climbed into the car, he frowned: "HYDRA's shadow is getting clearer, and their reach isn't just in the periphery. Our internal systems have been completely infiltrated, the plan must be suspended immediately."

Hill turned her head and glanced at him: "Who was the assassin?"

Fury leaned back in the seat, his wrist resting on his leg, his brow furrowed: "That metal arm exposed his identity - the Winter Soldier. They sent him, the objective is very clear, they want to silence me forever."

Hill gripped the steering wheel, her gaze forward: "The Winter Soldier? Isn't he just a legend?"

"He's real." Fury looked out the window, his gaze heavy, "If he has appeared, it means HYDRA believes my existence threatens their core interests."

The SUV drove through the streets of Washington and finally into the underground parking lot of an abandoned building. Fury jumped out of the car and quickly walked down the stairs into a hidden command room, where there were only a few loyal Agents. In the center of the room was a main control computer, its screen displaying all the information flow of the Insight Project.

Fury stood before the table, tapping his fingers on the surface, his tone grave: "I need to shut down the entire system immediately. The problem now isn't just that HYDRA controls resources, but that we can't distinguish between friend and foe."

Hill responded in a low voice: "What's the next step?"

"Get this evidence to the most trustworthy person." Fury turned, his gaze firm, "Steve Rogers. He's the only one who won't be influenced by HYDRA."

A few hours later, Fury stood inside a hidden warehouse. Steve Rogers stood opposite him, his brow furrowed, his expression full of confusion: "Are you saying S.H.I.E.L.D. has been infiltrated by HYDRA?"

Fury nodded, handing him an encrypted USB drive: "The Insight Project was supposed to protect Earth from threats, but HYDRA has infiltrated the core of our system. They plan to use the Insight Project to kill everyone who opposes them, and this list covers the globe."

Steve looked at the USB drive, his voice low: "What's their objective?"

"Control everything." Fury's eyes were unusually calm, "They know that as long as people like you exist, their plan can never be completely successful."

Steve clenched the USB drive in his hand, thinking for a moment: "So you're telling me not to trust anyone, including everyone inside S.H.I.E.L.D.?"

"Including me." Fury's gaze met Steve's directly, "If you find anything unusual about me, don't hesitate, terminate me."

Steve nodded, his expression unusually resolute. He put the USB drive into his pocket, his gaze firm: "I'll get to the bottom of this, but you need to ensure your own safety."

Fury's lips curved into a slight cold smile: "I'm not that easy to kill. You and Wilson can start investigating from the old route over there, I need time to clean up the insiders."

Just as Steve and Sam Wilson were following the clues to investigate, they discovered hidden dark secrets within a series of seemingly ordinary S.H.I.E.L.D. operation records. These operations were all related to the core area of the Insight Project, and also included many targets who were "accidentally dealt with."

Sam stood before the computer, his expression slightly surprised: "These records... some of them are forged. HYDRA hasn't just infiltrated the system, they're also eliminating dissenters under the name of S.H.I.E.L.D."

Steve looked down at the records on the screen, his fist slightly clenched: "These people are innocent. They didn't even know they were being targeted."

"This is just the beginning." Sam pointed to another record on the screen, "They're still further testing the kill range of the Insight Project. I bet the weapons on these carriers are far more complex than we know."

The two quickly gathered more evidence, and just then, a routine S.H.I.E.L.D. meeting was unexpectedly terminated. A group of sudden attackers broke into the conference room, using highly technical means to seal off the entire area.

"HYDRA is clearly no longer hiding," Steve said in a low voice.

Sam put on his flight wing device, his tone resolute: "Alright, Captain, do you have a plan?"

Steve looked up at the distant carrier model, his eyes sharp: "Destroy the core control console of the Insight Project."

Sam stood before the observation window on the top floor of the S.H.I.E.L.D. building, his gaze locked on the helicarriers hovering in the distance, a hint of excitement and nervousness on his face. He turned and looked at Steve, his tone conveying respect and a question: "Captain, this mission is truly hardcore. Honestly, wouldn't it be a bit more reliable if we could bring in skilled fighters like Hawkeye and Black Widow? And Tony, when he was helping me modify my flight wing device, he casually mentioned a few ideas I haven't fully tried yet."

Steve leaned by the window, arms crossed, and slightly shook his head: "Clint? I contacted him, but... to be honest, he needs to spend time with his family right now. I can't count on him showing up anytime, he has his life he needs to protect." He paused, looked down and thought for a second, then continued, "As for Tony, I saw him recently. His post-war syndrome is more severe than I imagined, his entire state is very unstable. He jokes with his mouth, but there's too much unsaid in his eyes. Forcing him to participate in this kind of action, I'm not sure if it's good or bad for him."

Sam raised an eyebrow, seemingly a little surprised: "Tony, that guy, actually has times like this? I thought he'd be as sharp-tongued and fearless as usual."

Just then, Natasha's voice came from behind Steve, with her usual relaxed tone: "Tony is indeed fearless, but he can't escape from nightmares. If you want him to be responsible for electronic information, I suggest you reconsider carefully. His recent energy has been focused on patching up those 'mental loopholes.' As for Clint—" she paused, revealing a slightly playful smile, "He went home. At his speed, if you act now, he might just make it for the celebration banquet."

Sam smiled and shrugged: "Alright, looks like it's just up to us. The helicarriers are so big, I'm not sure my little wings can handle it, but I have to try."

Steve nodded, his brow slightly furrowed, as if weighing the pros and cons. He turned his head and looked at Natasha: "What do you think Tony would do if he knew our current situation?"

Natasha raised her eyebrows, her tone carrying a hint of meaning: "If you ask me, he'd first scold you guys, say you're crazy, and then immediately start working, modifying a few drones to rush into the carrier system and cause trouble. But the problem is, whether he's willing to answer the phone right now, whether he's willing to help."

Steve lowered his head and pondered for a few seconds, then suddenly made a decision: "I need to give him a call and try." He said, reaching out, "Lend me your encrypted line."

Natasha handed over a small communication device, her tone casual: "Good luck, Captain. With Tony, when he replies depends entirely on his mood at the time."

Steve dialed the phone, waiting quietly for a few seconds. A familiar mechanical voice came through the earpiece: "This is Jarvis, Mr. Steve Rogers, it's a pleasure to receive your call. However, Mr. Tony is currently..."

"Jarvis, put Tony on the phone." Steve interrupted directly, his voice low but with undeniable firmness.

"Understood, please wait a moment." Jarvis's voice was calm and gentle. Soon, Tony's slightly lazy voice came from the other end: "Hello, Captain? This call from you is quite a surprise. Are you saving the World again?"

Steve frowned slightly, but his tone remained calm: "Tony, the situation we're facing this time is more complex than the New York War. S.H.I.E.L.D. has been infiltrated by HYDRA, and they're trying to use the Insight Project to eliminate dissenters."

Tony lightly snorted, with his usual sarcastic tone: "HYDRA? Those retro idiots, always thinking about World domination. I guess this time they plan to blow up half the Earth with helicarriers?"

"Pretty much." Steve replied, his voice low, "Their list includes millions of innocent people. We need your help, especially with the carrier's electronic system."

Tony was silent for a few seconds, seemingly considering. His tone was no longer flippant, taking on a hint of weariness and seriousness: "Captain, you know, I'm not the person who can rush to the front line anytime anymore. This time... I'm afraid I can only give you some technical support. After all, electronic systems are my strength, it's best to solve it remotely."

Steve nodded: "Any help is important, Tony. We can't let these people succeed."

Tony's voice became slightly lower: "I'll send you an encrypted program that can bypass S.H.I.E.L.D.'s core firewall, but I must warn you, once you use it, HYDRA will know your location."

"Thank you," Steve replied briefly.

Tony sighed, his voice carrying complex emotions: "Captain, be careful. I really don't want to have to deal with your old shield again."
