Chapter 23 - The First Test After Leaving the Duke's Manor

Huo Yuhao watched Old Chen's back, a flash of understanding crossing his mind.

Actually, leaving the Duke's Manor through the back door didn't require passing the firewood room. In other words, Old Chen had deliberately led him this way.

Most importantly, the timing seemed to have been calculated by Old Chen. It was a coincidence that they arrived here just as the firewood room's servants began to gather, preparing to work.

As they were about to pass a corner, Huo Yuhao's gaze turned icy as he glanced at the firewood room. His right hand instinctively reached for the White Tiger Dagger hanging at his waist.

It seemed the first test after leaving the Duke's Manor had arrived…

Old Chen walked ahead, perhaps sensing something, a smile playing on his lips.

The Duke's Manor had several back doors. The one Old Chen led Huo Yuhao towards was the one he frequently used.

At this moment, the back door was tightly shut, with dim, yellow light spilling onto the walls, leaving mottled shadows.

"Creak."

The door was made of iron, and it was unclear where it was rusty, as it emitted a grating sound when opened.

As the door opened, a gust of cold wind swept in from outside, instantly clearing Huo Yuhao's mind and making him feel refreshed.

After stepping out of the Duke's Manor, Old Chen looked at the faintly brightening sky in the east and, with his hands clasped behind his back, said without turning his head, "I will see you off here. Everything from now on depends on you."

Huo Yuhao didn't speak, but simply clasped his hands in front of his chest and bowed to Old Chen's back.

The next moment, Huo Yuhao walked around Old Chen and followed the small path, the level ground making his steps steady.

Gradually, Huo Yuhao's figure disappeared.

Old Chen stared deeply for a long while, then flicked his sleeves and left.

After walking about six hundred meters down the small path from the back gate, Huo Yuhao finally reached the main road.

The road was quiet at this hour, even the insects hiding in the grass were still asleep.

I wonder how many people will come looking for trouble.

He glanced back at the massive Duke's Manor complex. Huo Yuhao strode forward. He didn't intend to leave directly; instead, he chose to go to the place where Huo Yun'er was buried to say goodbye. He didn't know when he would return after leaving this time.

Time seemed to rewind itself. Huo Yuhao walked the same path again, but this time, one was a return, and the other was a departure.

After spending almost half an hour, Huo Yuhao heard the clear sound of water before he even arrived.

Approaching, he saw a winding, rugged stream. The water's surface shimmered, and a few fish lay motionless near the bottom.

The area was covered in dark green forest, and a faint fragrance of flowers lingered in the air.

The Douluo Continent was, without a doubt, rich in natural resources.

"I'll come back and find you later," Huo Yuhao said with a light tone, gazing at the fish in the water.

As soon as he finished speaking, he turned and prepared to enter the small path leading into the forest, intending to visit Huo Yun'er's grave and have a chat with her.

However, at the very moment Huo Yuhao turned around, he seemed to sense something. He twisted his head and looked towards a tall tree.

The tree was six meters tall, with a thick trunk, thicker than a water storage tank. But these weren't the crucial points. Huo Yuhao's gaze quickly dropped, landing on the tree roots that were sunken like giant pythons.

These roots were intertwined, extending outwards from the base of the trunk, protruding almost five or six meters, easily visible to the naked eye.

A large tree was normal, but what wasn't normal was that Huo Yuhao clearly remembered this tree was the very one struck by the golden light.

It was just that it was late, and it was raining at the time, so he hadn't had time to observe it before leaving.

He was absolutely certain that this tree hadn't been this large a few days ago. Its roots hadn't been so numerous either; they'd been almost entirely below the grass, unseen. How could it have grown so wildly in just a few days, as if it had eaten some kind of growth potion?

A hint of doubt arose in his mind, but Huo Yuhao didn't approach for a closer look. His Spiritual Eyes allowed him to observe from a distance.

"Whoosh." A deep blue light flickered within his eyes, as if containing the stars of the universe. Huo Yuhao focused his gaze intently.

However, he didn't find anything particularly unusual. The only thing that might catch one's attention was its extremely vigorous life force.

Huo Yuhao frowned, muttering to himself, "When I attacked Chai San, the golden light took his life force. This tree was also attacked, but it seems its life force hasn't decreased; rather, it's even stronger. Could the golden light released by the Heavenly Eye also amplify the life force of the creatures it hits?"

His mind worked quickly, and he soon realized this possibility.

Clearly, he needed to add another point to his assumptions about the Heavenly Eye.

After observing for a few more seconds, Huo Yuhao turned his gaze away and walked directly toward the entrance of another part of the forest.

Unlike a few days ago, the path wasn't muddy.

But what Huo Yuhao didn't notice was that after he left, the roots of the large tree twitched violently, as if it had just been holding something back.

When he arrived at the familiar dilapidated tomb after some time, Huo Yuhao looked at the simple wooden tombstone inscribed with "Tomb of Mother Huo Yun'er." He put down his pack and then sat cross-legged on the ground.

He had never seen Huo Yun'er in person, only searching through his memories. That gentle woman, in her life of less than thirty years, had a decent first half, at least not lacking food or clothing, but the second half of her life was lived in a state of "suffering."

Tired to the point of vomiting blood, tired with calloused hands, kicked by Dai Huabin, in her final moments, all she worried about was her child who had not yet grown up, never worrying about herself.

Throughout her life, she always believed in Dai Hao. Besides using the word "pathetic" to describe her, there were no other words to use.

The original text said that Huo Yun'er was very beautiful, and indeed she was, but her beauty had long since vanished. She was already emaciated and weak. After all, how could someone who worked at high intensity all year round have any beauty left?

Time passed, minute by minute. Huo Yuhao didn't say a word, abandoning many of the things he had wanted to say.

The wind gradually picked up, rustling the leaves around him.

"I'm leaving."

Finally, Huo Yuhao spoke. He stood up, brushed off his dusty pants, his tone gentle, a smile playing on his lips as if he were saying goodbye to a long-lost friend.

After standing for a few seconds, Huo Yuhao didn't hesitate. He shouldered his pack, turned, and headed back the way he came, this time towards Shrek City.

Unlike that idiot Huo Yuhao in the original story, who gave up on revenge, he wouldn't forget.

His own mother's blood feud, just because the Duchess was dead, you wouldn't avenge it?

Isn't that just brainless?

If his strength allowed it, he would have settled the score right then and there.

Unfortunately, he wasn't that strong, so... he'd come back to settle this score later.

The same.

As Huo Yuhao walked out of the forest, just as he reached the exit, before he could step out, several voices suddenly started talking.

In an instant, Huo Yuhao's steps abruptly stopped.

This place was usually deserted.

Without hesitation, Huo Yuhao immediately hid in a relatively concealed flower bed. He planned to observe the situation in secret.
