Chapter 31 - Chapter 33 – Delegation

Chapter 33 – Delegation

The rift shimmered one last time before collapsing into silence, leaving the cavern eerily still. The colossi, now frozen within diamond-like prisms, caught the fading light and reflected it in fractured, dazzling patterns. Dust drifted lazily through the air, settling over shattered stone, scorched earth, and the twins themselves.

Raynar dropped to one knee, panting. His gauntlets still sparked faintly, and every muscle ached as if they had been wrung like wet cloth. He took a deep breath, the air rasping in his lungs. We did it, he thought, a faint smile tugging at his lips. We actually did it.

Redmond, leaning against a jagged pillar, flexed his fingers experimentally. "Not bad for a day's work, huh?" he said, smirking, the faint bruises along his cheekbone catching the light.

Raynar groaned and wiped blood and sweat from his face. "Not bad? My arms feel like someone tried to tear them off with raw force, and you're calling it 'not bad'?"

Redmond chuckled, shaking his head. "Perspective, little brother. You always overthink things. I prefer overkill."

"You always prefer overkill," Raynar shot back, though a laugh escaped despite himself.

Elira had been observing silently from the shadows, her hands clasped lightly. The faint shimmer of Codex resonance lingered beneath her robe, unnoticed by anyone else. Her gaze lingered on the twins a moment longer than necessary, weighing the potential that lay in their abilities. Power this raw… and untamed. They've awakened something, though no one can yet see it, she thought, carefully hiding her awareness.

The excavation teams arrived, moving cautiously over the broken terrain. Engineers' devices beeped and hummed as they scanned the crystallized colossi, stabilizing readings and mapping the structures for study. Raynar and Redmond lingered nearby, their hands occasionally brushing shards of crystal as they exchanged small jabs.

"This thing's heavier than it looks," Raynar muttered, nudging one of the diamond prisms with the tip of his boot.

Redmond raised an eyebrow, grinning. "You're testing it?"

Raynar gritted his teeth. "Testing its structural integrity, thank you very much."

From the cavern's entrance, Aldrich stepped in, his presence immediately commanding attention. Silence fell like a wave over the teams. "Remarkable work," he said, voice steady and resonant. "I knew you were capable, but this… surpasses expectations."

Redmond straightened, pride flickering in his posture. "Thank you, Your Majesty," he replied smoothly.

Raynar muttered under his breath, "Does he always sound like he's narrating history?"

Redmond smirked. "He is narrating history. Just… enjoy being in it,Hot head."

Aldrich's sharp gaze swept over both of them. "The council has requested your presence immediately. Your achievements will be formally recognized, and the appropriate accolades awarded."

Redmond exhaled. Finally… recognition without someone trying to kill me first though not literally.

Council Chamber – Ceremony

The council chamber gleamed with polished stone floors, high ceilings, and banners catching the morning light. Representatives lined both sides, whispering softly. Aldrich led the twins to the center, raising a hand. The murmurs subsided instantly.

"Today, we acknowledge feats unprecedented in the history of the Dominion," Aldrich's voice rang clear. "These two—Raynar and Redmond—have faced the Rift and emerged victorious. Their courage, skill, and resolve have preserved the stability of the Dominion and demonstrated the strength of the human spirit."

Applause erupted. Raynar shifted awkwardly, unused to such attention. Redmond, however, simply smirked, letting the recognition wash over him.

Raynar muttered, "Do they have to make it sound like we fought dragons instead of crystal statues?"

Redmond leaned closer, whispering with a grin, "Better dragons than paperwork, I say."

Raynar rolled his eyes but allowed himself a small laugh.

The council president, a tall woman in silver-trimmed robes, approached, holding a medallion. "Raynar, for your exceptional bravery and contribution, you are hereby awarded an opportunity rare even among our distinguished warriors. You will attend the Dominion Academy for advanced training—an institution designed to refine combat mastery, tactical acumen, and control over your origin talent. Upon graduation, students are permitted to participate in sanctioned operations, including dungeon-type Rift raids as part of their academic curriculum."

Raynar froze, blinking. Wait… dungeon raids as school activities? "You mean… I get to fight more dangerous things and get graded on it?"

Redmond smirked. "Sounds like someone's dream job finally came true."

Raynar gritted his teeth, half in excitement, half in disbelief. "I mean… yeah, sure, that's awesome. But… more school? Seriously?"

Aldrich's voice cut through, firm and precise. "This is no ordinary education. The Academy will prepare you for challenges beyond what you've faced here. By the time Redmond returns from the Grayscale Dominion, you will be ready to participate in the Supremacy Holder Tournament and undertake missions that test every aspect of your skill. Consider it both a reward and an investment."

Raynar exhaled slowly. Reward… or punishment disguised as opportunity? He smirked, shaking his head. "Well… I suppose if it's officially sanctioned dungeon raids, I can't complain. That's… actually perfect."

Elira lingered nearby, observing quietly. She bent slightly toward Aldrich, speaking in a whisper only he could hear. "The Codex resonance has shifted," she murmured. "It's subtle, but detectable. If unmonitored, it could… accelerate growth in ways unexpected."

Aldrich inclined his head subtly, acknowledging the information without anyone else noticing. "Noted. We will monitor it closely."

Redmond stepped forward next. "And for your unparalleled skill and judgment, you are granted the legal qualification to accompany me on official missions, including ventures into the Grayscale Dominion. Use this opportunity wisely."

Redmond's eyes flicked to Raynar briefly, a faint smirk on his lips. "The missions ahead are as much a test of your diplomacy as your combat skill."

Raynar chuckled under his breath. "Great. One brother raids Rifts in school, the other runs off on a diplomatic adventure. Perfect balance."

Redmond leaned in, nudging him lightly. "You'll have the advantage of knowing what I'm getting into first-hand when you return."

Raynar rolled his eyes. "Yeah, yeah. Lucky me."

After the Ceremony – Twin Banter & Reflection

As the council dispersed, Raynar and Redmond walked down the hall, bruised but upright.

"I still can't believe it," Raynar muttered, flexing his shoulders. "Instead of just medals or privileges, I get… school. Advanced combat school."

Redmond laughed. "Only you would treat that like a punishment and a reward at the same time."

Raynar shot him a glare. "I didn't say that. But think about it… by the time you come back from the Grayscale Dominion, I'll have participated in official dungeon raids, trained at the Academy, and maybe even entered the Supremacy Holder Tournament."

Redmond grinned. "So, when I get back, you'll be trying to steal the spotlight from me?"

Raynar smirked, tired but energized. "Exactly. And maybe… just maybe… I'll actually make it interesting for you."

Elira followed behind silently. Good. Let him grow in a structured environment. Let the Codex stir without anyone noticing. It will serve the Dominion—and them—in ways they do not yet understand.

Aldrich's Briefing – Expedition & Academy Integration

Later, in Aldrich's private chamber, maps of Zion and surrounding dominions lay spread across a polished table.

"Redmond, you will accompany me to the Grayscale Dominion," Aldrich said, tracing borders with a gloved finger. "Maintain discretion. Avoid drawing attention until your presence is formally requested."

Redmond raised an eyebrow. "So basically, spy and diplomat rolled into one?"

Aldrich's thin smile gave nothing away. "Among other things. Remember: diplomacy and observation are as important as combat. Missteps could have consequences."

Raynar leaned forward, fists clenching subtly. "And I? I get to fight… in school?"

Aldrich nodded. "You will attend the Academy, undertake sanctioned operations, and train under the guidance of our finest instructors. By the time Redmond returns, you will have honed your skills sufficiently to participate in the Supremacy Holder Tournament, and be ready for sanctioned dungeon-type Rift raids as part of your curriculum."

Raynar's lips curved into a grin. School… raids… tournament… fine. I'll make them regret thinking they can teach me anything.

Redmond smirked. "Looks like we both have challenges ahead. Just don't try to beat me before I return."

Raynar chuckled. "Oh, you'll see. By the time you're back, I'll be ready for anything."

Elira's eyes lingered on the closed rift. In a whisper to Aldrich, she murmured again, "The Codex resonance is active… subtly influencing him. Careful observation is advised."

Aldrich nodded silently. Let it grow. Let it be contained… until the time is right.

Outside, sunlight spilled across the Dominion city. Bright and promising, yet beneath it, currents of power, politics, and hidden potential swirled like an invisible tide.

Raynar exhaled, determination solidifying. We've won this battle… but the real war is only beginning.

Redmond's hand brushed his arms lightly. And I can't wait to see what comes next.

Epilogue – Departures

The sun had begun to dip behind the tall spires of the Dominion city, painting the streets in shades of gold and crimson. The air was alive with activity—messengers hurrying through the plaza, merchants packing up, and the faint hum of machinery echoing in the distance. Yet for the twins, the world had narrowed to just the courtyard outside the council chamber.

Raynar adjusted the strap of his pack, taking in the sprawling campus of Aurora Dawn Academy in the distance. The gates gleamed like polished metal under the fading sunlight, a promise of rigorous training and new challenges.

Redmond, standing beside him in his expedition uniform, shook his head with a faint laugh. "You look like a kid on the first day of school," he said, smirking. "Except… you're supposed to be the older twin."

Raynar scowled, though there was amusement in his eyes. "And you're supposed to be staying behind to do… whatever it is you call 'diplomatic missions.' Lucky you. At least you're used to this world of politics and boring speeches."

Redmond grinned. "Hey, somebody has to keep the Dominion's reputation intact while you're off breaking things in school-sanctioned dungeon raids."

Raynar's lips quirked into a grin. "School-sanctioned? Don't make it sound like it's safe. I'm going to fight monsters, deal with traps, and maybe even see things you'd soil yourself over."

Redmond laughed. "Good. That's the Raynar I know. Just… don't die before the first Supremacy Holder Tournament. I'd like to see you make a mess of it while I'm gone."

Raynar's eyes sparkled. "Oh, you'll see. By the time you get back, I'll be ready for anything. Maybe even be the one dragging you along for once."

Elira appeared quietly beside them, her presence calm but firm. She leaned slightly toward Aldrich, whispering something only he could hear. Both glanced at Raynar and Redmond for a brief moment, unreadable expressions on their faces. No one else noticed the subtle exchange.

Raynar frowned slightly at her, sensing the weight behind her gaze. "You planning to keep an eye on me while I'm gone?" he asked, half teasing, half serious.

Elira tilted her head, expression unreadable. "I watch when it is necessary. The Codex stirs… quietly. It will not be ignored."

Redmond rolled his eyes, cutting in with a grin. "Great, so he has a personal watcher. Lucky me."

Raynar elbowed him lightly. "Shut up. At least I'll be busy learning things that will make you eat your words when I come back."

Aldrich stepped forward, his tone measured. "Redmond, your expedition begins now. Raynar, your training at Aurora Dawn Academy will start immediately. Discipline, combat, and sanctioned Rift operations await. Make use of it wisely."

Redmond gave a short nod, his usual smirk in place. "Understood. Don't have too much fun without me, older brother."

Raynar crossed his arms, feigning exasperation. "Fun? This is survival training. Don't get it twisted. And don't come back expecting me to wait around while you parade through the Grayscale Dominion like some hero."

Redmond laughed. "Wouldn't dream of it."

The twins shared a brief, silent moment, the kind only siblings who had shared countless battles could have. A flicker of pride, a pinch of mischief, and a whole lot of unspoken understanding passed between them.

Raynar hoisted his bag over his shoulder. "Fine. Let's get this over with. Aurora Dawn Academy won't wait for me to sulk about leaving my annoying little brother."

Redmond shook his head again, smiling. "Annoying little brother? You've got it backwards, Ray. I've been annoying you since birth."

Raynar grinned, stepping toward the Academy gates. "Yeah, yeah. Keep telling yourself that while I get stronger."

Thus their journey begins.
