Stepping into Dr degaldo's office the air shifted.
He stood when he saw me, his warm eyes dimmed.
"Good morning Dr, you wanted to see me?"
"Yes come in, come in…." He urged
"Congratulations on your wedding."
"Thank you Dr."
His expression softened, fingers placing together as he offered me a seat started.
I just want to say, you are one of the best employees we've ever had here. Your dedication, your love and compassion for the animals, your work ethic...… it's not gone unoticable. You've made a real difference here.
I blinked heart skipping.
"Thank you... doctor?"
"Is everything okay? I added
"I'm afraid I have some bad news." He admitted
"Due to some recent changes in ownership, your position here is no longer viable."
"We'll be letting you go."
"What?" I screeched in terror.
"I just got back! I can't be fired without a reason."
"I'm so sorry.... I didn't want this…. I tried to keep you here….. I really did." He whispered.
"Why? What did I do?" I whispered, devastated.
He looked torn, hands tightening slightly.
"It's not you.... The decision came from higher up."
"The new owner...… he's reconstructing... making cuts.... You're one of them."
The room started spinning . I gripped the arms of the chair to steady myself.
"This is ridiculous! I can't loose my job like this! I need a his job." I pleaded.
"I wish there was more I could do. I fought for you, but it's out of my hands now." He continued
"I'm really sorry, I wish you all the best in your future eneavours."
......…..
The weight of his words crashed down on me as I left the meeting room, my mind racing to my husband.
"Could he be behind this?"
My stomach sinks as realization dawns in.
I stormed into my office, pulling out my phone, hands trembling as I dialed his number.
After he saved his number on my phone after the wedding ceremony, I never imagined I'll be the one to call him. It rang twice and he answered.
"Why did you do this? I blurted angrily
"Ah..... I didn't expect you to call so soon
"How's your first day back to work my wife?"
"Don't play games with me! You had me fired from the vet!" I screamed
"How could you do this?" I whispered sadly.
"It's just business my dear.... You should be thanking me. Now you have enough time to focus on your true responsibilities."
"This isn't business! You're ruining my life! You have no right!" I screeched.
"I have every right. You are my wife now and I won't tolerate any distractions." He replied, calm and collected as always.
"Consider this a lesson in understanding your place."
"You think this is going to break me? I won't let you control me like this!" I bit back.
"Control?.... You're about to find out how much control I have over everything in your life." He whispered
Enjoy your newfound freedom. We'll discuss the next steps when you get home.
He hangs up leaving my heart pounding with a mix of anger and despair.
The weight of his control hanging heavily around me and I know I must find a way to fight back.
