"Catch anything?" Kacy turned her head and looked at Felix, water droplets glistening on her fishing line as it swayed in the gentle current. Anna, Felix, and Kacy had been fishing for hours along the rocky banks of the river near Ethan's Dam.
"No. Why isn't Dad with us? He promised he would come and fish with us after school." Felix huffed.
"He's not feeling well, so he decided to stay at home," Anna replied.
"Look! I got a fish!" A hard tug pulled on Kacy's fishing line. Kacy quickly reeled in the fish. "I caught us a trout!" She beamed, proudly holding up the silver-scaled fish that gleamed in the sunlight. It flapped desperately in her hands.
She smiled while holding the six-pound trout.
Anna said, "Great. Let's go home. You can show it to your dad."
Felix and Kacy nodded.
They returned to their house, their fishing gear clattering as they entered the living room. Shocked to see Dan lying motionless on the living room floor, his body rigid and convulsing. Dan's arms frantically jerked across the hardwood floor, his fingers clawing at nothing, while his eyes rolled back, showing only white.
Kacy screamed, "Dad!"
Felix cried, "What's happening to Dad?"
Kacy yelled, "He's having a seizure! Mom, go call the ambulance."
Anna raced to the wall-mounted phone and dialled 911.
As they waited, Dan's movements ceased, and Felix knelt beside his father, gently stroking his greyish-brown hair, dread washing over him as he noticed Dan's pale complexion.
Felix looked at his wristwatch; an hour had passed, and the ambulance had not arrived.
Kacy said, "Mom! Did you call them?"
Anna nodded. "Yes, I don't know why they aren't here."
Two paramedics entered the house. Felix's face glowed as if he'd lanternflies inside of him. A paramedic checked Dan's pulse, and he shook his head.
"I'm sorry, but he's gone; there's no pulse."
Felix sobbed, his body shaking with grief, and Anna pulled him close, wrapping her arms around him as tears streamed down her cheeks.
