Chapter 58 - The smell of freedom

The full moon glowed amongst the black clouds. Jared hides behind the trunk of the tree. He could be wiped out if he were spotted by the guards. However, he had to escape from the camp; otherwise, it was only a matter of time before he would starve to death.

 This is my chance.

Jared ran onto the barrels that were on the docks. He tried to lift the lid of the barrel, but he couldn't. He looked at the side, and it was screwed shut. Dug into the pocket of his pants and pulled out a sharp rock. With the rock, he unscrewed the bolts from the barrel and slid the lid off the barrel.

Success.

He picked up the barrel and dumped the green bananas into the ocean. So, the workers won't notice anything suspicious, he returned the barrel to its original spot. He jumped inside the barrel; it was a tight squeeze, and he put the lid over his head.

After thirty minutes, the two workers returned. The worker yelled, "Gerald! I can't lift this barrel!" He banged his fist on the lid.

Jared's heart sank. Panic rose inside of him.

What if they searched inside?

Gerald yelled, "I'll get the trolley." He'd boarded the boat and brought out the trolley.

The worker yelled, "I don't think there are bananas in here."

Jared's heart skipped a beat.

"I should check inside."

Sweat ran down Jared's cheeks, and his lips trembled. If they discovered him inside the guards would be called, and he would be killed.

"Stop! Trevor, don't open the barrel! We don't want the food to spoil inside!" Gerald yelled.

"The barrel is very heavy-"

"Shut up! Put your back into it! You've been complaining all day!"

Trevor groaned. To Jared's relief, the workers lifted the barrel and strapped it in place, so it wouldn't fall off the trolley. They pushed the trolley onto the boat and stored it inside the shipping container.

After two hours of sitting in pitch black. Jared lifted the lid off the barrel and looked around. Two hundred barrels were inside the metal container. Jared knew it was safe to get out of the barrel and stretched his legs. It was uncomfortable having to sit in a wooden barrel with your tight knees against his chest. His muscles ached, and he could see his breath in the air. It was dumb luck that his plan had worked.
