"DXD: Multiverse Journey"Chapter 256: Origami's Special Pure Water

"Tohka, keep it down! If you make too much noise, they'll spot us."

Behind a thick screen of shrubbery, four girls crouched in a not-so-covert huddle: Tohka, Yoshino, Yuzuru, and Kaguya. Today was Origami's date with Shuo, and there was no way they'd let such a crucial event pass without some undercover surveillance.

Yoshino and Yuzuru might have begged off, but Tohka and Kaguya's relentless pestering wore them down. As Tohka had declared, "Origami's my greatest rival—who knows what she's plotting? We have to keep watch, just in case." Kaguya, ever the student, added, "Master Origami's romantic techniques are legendary. I must observe and learn."

While the four whispered and bickered, Origami appeared in the distance, gliding toward Shuo. She wore a simple sundress, her white hair drifting around her face, blue eyes cool and unreadable. With her porcelain skin and angelic features, she looked every bit the elegant lady.

Without hesitation, Origami slipped her arm through Shuo's and rose on tiptoe to kiss his cheek. "Sorry to keep you waiting, Shuo. Let's start our date."

The girls in the bushes nearly lost it.

"Unbelievable! Origami's actually that bold? Ugh… I'm doing that with Shuo tomorrow, no question," Tohka fumed.

"Astonishing. Master Origami is truly peerless," Kaguya whispered, eyes shining with admiration.

"Wow, Origami's so forward!" Yoshino murmured.

Yuzuru simply nodded. "Agreement."

Shuo, meanwhile, touched his cheek where Origami had kissed him, then smiled at her. "Well, let's get this date started, Origami."

The morning passed beneath the watchful eyes of their not-so-stealthy shadows. Strangely, for all Origami's reputation for bizarre, logic-defying behavior, today's date was… almost normal. Shopping, window browsing, idle conversation—nothing out of the ordinary. Even Shuo seemed off-balance, and their four tailing observers were equally perplexed.

Is Origami… normal now?

By noon, Origami led Shuo to a restaurant. The moment Shuo saw the sign, his eyelid twitched. This was the same place Kaguya had tried to bring him on their date, though they'd never actually gone inside. So Kaguya's plan really was Origami's handiwork all along.

No use running from fate. Shuo braced himself and followed Origami in.

They found a table. The waiter handed over a menu. Shuo scanned the options, and his jaw nearly hit the floor: seahorse and lean pork soup, turtle and goji berry stew, bull testicle hotpot, angelica root and loach casserole… Each dish was more intimidating than the last. And Origami? She didn't even glance at the menu—she just ordered every single "signature" dish.

When the waiter left, Shuo forced a smile. "Origami, are you sure you can eat all this? And, um, are these even—"

She cut him off with a sly smile. "These aren't for me. They're for you, Shuo. You have to finish every bite. Otherwise, it's wasteful."

Shuo stared at her, speechless. I want to say no, but… With my body, do I really need this stuff?

Half an hour later, the table was covered in a menagerie of "tonic" dishes—anything that flew, swam, or crawled. Shuo, determined not to waste food, steeled himself and dug in with the desperation of a man facing execution. Snake, he discovered, tasted a bit like chicken. Bear Grylls would be proud.

Across the table, Origami watched him with a faint, inscrutable smile.

By the time Shuo was done, he let out a satisfied belch, paid the bill, and followed Origami out. But as soon as they stepped outside, Origami spotted their four shadows still lurking nearby. She sighed, then her eyes sparkled with sudden inspiration.

"Look!" she cried, pointing skyward. "A giant kinako bread is flying through the air!"

Tohka spun around, eyes wide. "Where? Where is it? I don't see anything!"

In that instant, Origami grabbed Shuo's arm and hustled him away. By the time Tohka realized she'd been duped, the couple had vanished.

"Ahhh! Damn you, Origami! You tricked me again!"

Kaguya shook her head. "Tohka, you're even easier to fool than Yoshino."

"Agreement," Yuzuru said.

Once they'd shaken their pursuers, Origami slowed her pace. Shuo could only laugh, shaking his head. Tohka's gullibility was almost endearing—she didn't stand a chance against Origami's schemes.

"So, Origami, what's next on the agenda?"

Origami turned, her expression unreadable. From behind her back, she produced a bottle of pure water and handed it to him. "Drink some water."

"Thanks, but I just ate. I'm not really thirsty."

"No. You're very thirsty right now."

He blinked. "Uh…"

"You're thirsty," she repeated, more insistent.

Shuo hesitated. Origami, undeterred, twisted the cap off, took a long drink herself, then—without warning—grabbed Shuo by the collar, pulled him down, and pressed her lips to his.

Glug. Glug.

With a gentle but determined kiss, she poured the water from her mouth to his. The taste was sweet, with a faint trace of salt—strange, but not unpleasant.

Only when she was sure he'd swallowed every drop did Origami finally let him go.

Shuo licked his lips, puzzled. "That tasted… odd. Was it sugar water?"

"No. It's my water."

He blinked. "Wait, what does that mean?"

Origami's gaze was perfectly calm. "I added medicine."

"…What?!"

Before he could react, a wave of dizziness crashed over him. His vision swam; his legs buckled. What the—? Even with my constitution, this actually works?!

With a heavy thud, Shuo collapsed.

Origami watched him for a moment, then glanced at the half-empty bottle in her hand. To be absolutely certain, she pried open his mouth and poured the rest of the water in, making sure he swallowed every last drop.
