In a dingy basement in New York, a doctor in a stained white coat tended to two wounded gangsters. His hands moved with practiced precision, but his face told a different story—unshaven, eyes bloodshot, sunken like a man long deprived of sleep. He looked less like a physician and more like a patient himself.
This man was Calvin Zabo—better known as Mr. Hyde. Once a brilliant scientist in biochemical medicine, Calvin had abandoned his career after falling in love with the Inhuman Jiaying. For a time, he tried to live peacefully as a clinic doctor.
But tragedy struck. Jiaying was killed, their daughter taken. The grief twisted Calvin's mind until all that was left was rage, obsession, and madness. He became the monster he had once only written about, a murderer who called himself Mr. Hyde.
Recently, however, Calvin's mood had lifted. He had finally tracked down his daughter. Soon, he believed, they would be together again. To impress her, he had even stopped taking the unstable chemical cocktails he had designed for himself. The withdrawal only made his hands shake and his temper shorter.
"Hey, doc!" one of the thugs snapped. He was dressed in a gaudy hip-hop jacket and now shoved a pistol against Calvin's forehead. "If you don't fix my brother fast, I'll blow your brains out right here!"
"Calm down, calm down," Calvin said with an eerie smile. His voice was soft, but his expression twisted as bloodlust rippled beneath his skin. His fingers scratched at his own hair as though fighting the urge to tear something apart.
"Mr. Hyde, forgive him!" the wounded gangster on the cot wheezed. Pale and bleeding, he still managed to look apologetic. "My brother's new to the city—he doesn't know your rules."
Calvin's grin widened. "See? That's how a patient should behave. Don't worry, little lamb. The wound is clean. Rest a few days and you'll live."
He batted the pistol away with casual disdain and began to pack his strange mix of Western surgical tools and Eastern acupuncture needles.
But just as he turned to leave, Calvin's eyes caught a figure in the doorway. His suppressed fury erupted instantly.
"Raina," he growled. "My sweet little flower… I finally see you again."
The beautiful woman in the black dress stepped inside. But Calvin's joy was poisoned with anger.
"Calvin," she said softly.
"Call me Mr. Hyde!" he roared. His veins bulged, his eyes wild. "You promised me my daughter! You said you'd bring her to me!"
In a flash, his hand clamped around Raina's throat, lifting her into the air. She gasped, clawing at his iron grip.
"Skye—your daughter—she's with S.H.I.E.L.D.!" Raina choked out, her face reddening. "You'll never reach her without help… Let me go! I can't breathe!"
Her words, desperate but steady, carried an unfamiliar confidence. Something about her had changed.
"My daughter's name… is Daisy!" Calvin bellowed. The beast inside him surged. Yet when he saw the certainty burning in Raina's eyes, he hesitated—and finally dropped her to the floor.
She coughed violently, clutching her throat, then managed, "Mr. Whitehall wants to see you."
At the mention of the HYDRA leader, Calvin's face contorted even further. "Whitehall…" he hissed. The name scraped from his throat like broken glass. "Very well." His hatred was endless, but if cooperation meant a chance to see Daisy again, he would endure even that.
"Why are you with HYDRA, Raina? You traitorous bitch!"
Raina touched her cheek, her eyes glowing with fanatical light. "I always knew I was different. I thought the Obelisk would make me beautiful, but I was wrong. Then I met the Boss. With him, I can become more than beautiful—I can become an angel."
Her voice was reverent, gentle, and feverish.
Calvin's glare was molten with rage, but he held his tongue. He swept his medical kit into his bag and slung it over his shoulder.
"Hey, doctor!" The thug's brother, the man in the flashy jacket, finally exploded. "My brother's still bleeding out and you're walking out on us?"
Calvin stopped in his tracks. Then, slowly, a smile spread across his face—a smile too wide, too excited, too wrong. He plucked a scalpel from the table, turned, and without hesitation rammed it through the man's neck.
Blood sprayed across Calvin's face. His grin split wider.
"Help! Don't kill me!" the wounded gangster shrieked from the cot, terror flooding his eyes.
But Calvin Zabo wasn't a doctor anymore. He was the monster Mr. Hyde.
"Tch. He's gone completely mad," Raina muttered under her breath. Her face was pale, sweat running down her temple. As Calvin cackled over his kill, she quietly slipped a small vial from the table into her pocket.
She had stolen it from him before. She would steal again.
Her fingers traced the bottle as she left the basement. Can this really change me, even for a moment? she wondered. Then, without looking back at the blood-soaked room, Raina vanished into the night.
