Chapter 47 - Plan

It might be possible to disable it. I don't know what kinds of powers or abilities it has and given that the bastard has laser eyes, it could really be capable of anything. Or that could be its entire kit and kaboodle.

Given its size, I might be able to topple it by taking a leg. A full-blown barrage of [Plasma Arrows] to the back of the knee could disable it, even if only temporarily.

If it fell over face first and lost all its limbs then it might become entirely crippled. Even if I only take one leg, I can follow it whilst recovering and then take the next later. Then an arm. Then the other. Then find a way to kill it.

But that entire plan presumes it can't recover it's lost limbs.

It also has that shield and sword which it won't simply not use to defend itself.

This plan heavily relies on three things. My ability to actually topple the Giant, whether or not it has a way to recover from injuries, and if I can successfully escape its wrath to recover after deliberating it.

None of the abilities Snow shares with me through [Soul Link] will be helpful as [Divine Blessing] and [Beast Cadence] improve my senses but not my actual attack power. [Divine Totem] could help me if I knew how to use divinity.

Snow is too far away to lend me any kind of help anytime soon, and he is busy exploring the area around Mount Horoki and improving the concentration of divinity on the mountain.

He's too busy to make the journey here for a 'the giant might be after humans' spiel.

What I need is a way to guarantee my safety after attacking the Giant and I have just the idea in mind.

I could run like hell whilst blasting [Accel] and it might work, but it would drain my mana, which would reduce the frequency of my attacks.

Instead of running though, I could find a hiding spot on the Giant's itself.

From what I know all of the Giant's attack power is directed forward, or down. The chaos left behind at the ruined city also shows this as the Giant had circled the city instead of walking across it.

Now, I could be over thinking but what if it doesn't have a way to defend its own back.

If I hid on one of the ledges on its chest piece and attacked from there, I would be safe from its retaliation even if it knows I am there.

The only thing I really have to worry about is the vulnerable state ill be in when the Giant topples.

But I'll deal with that when we get to it.

The plan is seeming quite good so far.

I'll climb the Giant and situate myself on a ledge off the back of its armour.

From there I will attack the soft spot behind its knee, which isn't really soft since its stone, until it falls. It may take a few attempts, but I should be safe in my hiding spot.

Once the Giant topples, I'll flee and assess my options. If it can recover, then there might be nothing I can do. But if it can't I can continuously attack it from afar until it is dead.

Who knows how long this will take though.

Concluding my plan of attack, I follow the Giant in its new route.

It takes about a day and a bit into the night to catch up with the Giant.

Resting so that I am fully prepared for the climb, I set off to scale the beast a first light.

The giant looks smooth from a distance but once you get up close and personal you can see many small dents and protrusions all over its body.

The shape of its armour serves as my route. I jump up to the ledge that identifies the sole of its boot and begin my climb from there.

With my superhuman strength I can easily jump very high from a stand still, so I make quick work of climbing the beast.

I can't jump too far at once since I risk the Giant moving slightly out of reach if I misjudge it.

With each step the Giant takes I brace for the impact of its step as the world shakes.

It is much safer to climb when the leg I'm on isn't moving but I can make distance quicker by using the slight incline its bent leg makes when it steps forward. Climbing to the front end of the leg I scramble up the incline with greater speed than when hanging vertically.

It takes almost the entire day to climb the Giant, even with my absurd strength and speed.

I also had to use [Accel] and [Incras] a few times to get a better handle on some of the more precarious spots.

I took multiple breaks as well. Despite my monstrous stamina I still can't handle a full day of vertically scaling a moving cliff in one go. How weak.

Eventually I made it to the Giant's waistline where a stone belt at least ten metres thick separated the lower and upper half of the Giant.

Frankly, I suspect that this belt is the best possible place to be for when I launch my attack.

The target is closer to me than if I climbed higher and the belt leaves plenty of room to move around to respond to unexpected variables.

I don't have anything to make a camp with, so I just lay down on the stone near the Giant's back, as far from the cliff side as possible.

The view from here was nothing short of incredible. From this high up I feel as if I can see the entire world.

I need to recover all my strength before I start my attack so I meditate until night comes followed by the best sleep I could manage given my situation.

Once morning came, I sat on the edge of the belt looking down towards my target.

[Plasma Arrow] retains its shape when it strikes a target and can cause the material around it to melt.

My goal is to do exactly that. I will lodge a series of arrows into the Giant's knee and let the flames burn through my mana and see what happens.

Preparing my attack, I wait for the Giant to be halfway through its next step before I launch my arrows.

The light produced by the flaming streaks of plasma in the air looked like an entire new sun withing the Giant's shadow.

This point in its walk is when the weak spot is most exposed and the Giant is the least balanced.

Timing the attack with its step I move away from the edge and launch the arrows.

BOOOOM

A short explosion signals the collision of my attack with the Giant's knee.

The attack definitely affected the Giant as it stumbled for a moment, stopping its step short to regain its balance.

I could feel that the arrows had successfully lodged themselves into the Giant's stony skin as the stone itself had clamped in on them and were disrupting my control over them with pure might.

But that was fine.

The arrows collision hadn't done a huge amount of damage, as they were meant for piercing not bludgeoning.

Really, it's like firing high velocity splinters from the Giant's perspective.

Either way I had achieved my goal. The arrows were lodged in place, and the flames were causing the surrounding area to scorch.

The stone was definitely not ordinary rock as the heat was making slow progress penetrating the Giant's skin. But it was making progress all the same.

In total I shot five arrows into its knee and upkeeping the temperature was draining about ten mana a second.

At this rate I should be able to keep the damage up for about thirty minutes before I need to rest and recuperate. Then I inspect the results and repeat the process.

However, the Giant wasn't too pleased with the prospect of letting me have my way.

Now that I had attacked it, any benefits the orb I had devoured were giving me were gone.

After it recovered from its stumble, the performed the first actions that gave it a semblance of life since I started stalking it.

It let out an immense world-shattering roar that I had to cover my ears to protect myself from.

Trying to maintain the mana connection to my arrows became extremely difficult all of a sudden and my body felt more sluggish than before.

It felt as if the Giant's roar had nerfed me. The effect wasn't permanent. I could feel my body recovering but it was slow.

The Giant also drew its sword from its waist. Unsheathing the behemoth blade shooks the belt I stood as it freed itself.

Furthermore, the moment the blade left the sheath a grey mass of life followed after it. The mass looked like a swarm of insects darting from the hive to attack any trespassers, except, each of these insects was far larger.

The grey creatures swarmed around the Giant, forming a protective barrier around it with their bodies. The entire Giant had been surrounded, myself included.

It didn't take long for one of them to notice me and charge to attack.

I drew formed my blade, which felt exceptionally difficult to achieve, and swung with all the might I could muster, cleaving the charging monster in two.

It's separated body crashed into the belt either side of me and crumbled into tiny pieces.

It was made of stone as well.

The head of the creature remained somewhat in tact and I caught a glimpse of its face. It looked the same as the Giant, except, its size and the fact it could fly let me identify it easier this time.

It was a [Corrupt Gargoyle].

And the Giant… [Soul Archive] never accepted Giant as its name…

It's a [Corrupt … Gargoyle] too?

No.

The massive swarm is protecting it.

It's a [Corrupt Queen Gargoyle].
