Today after I woke up, I made myself breakfast, then I went to train my magic. After all, this world is not for the weak— And being a human here, I must practice.
My job was to slay a few small monsters in the countryside that were causing trouble for the farmers by destroying their crop fields.
It took me 2–3 hours to get there. Once I arrived, I began preparing for my job. There were probably 10 or more of those small monsters. They call them puckets; their appearance is similar to a rabbit. Their magic resistance and magic power are quite low, so defeating them would be easy. However, their small size and speed give them an advantage in sneaking.
The best way to defeat them was to gather them in one place.
By interrogating the villagers, I learned that those puckets mostly appear in the afternoon and that barley crops are their favorite. So, I created an illusion of barley crops in the afternoon and set up a proper entry point. The entrance was designed to trap all those puckets into a pit, which I concealed with my illusion magic. I also needed to finish them quickly, because if they gathered and attacked me, it could cause trouble.
As planned, I finished them off by throwing a huge fireball at them.
Since monsters are made up of mana, they release a large amount of it when they die, and that mana flows to the one who defeated them.
I met the villagers afterward, and they were smiling so brightly that it made me realize it was worth killing those puckets. Everyone gathered around, thanked me, and even paid me some money. I told them it was my duty to protect them and that they could call me again if they needed me.
I said it as if I were some kinds of good person, but only I know how selfish, evil, and harsh I really am. Well, I think I'm better this way anyway. I am here to chase my dream, so I should put on the best act I can and use everyone as I wish.
I also got to use my new ability—now I can disguise myself as a beast or other being using my illusion magic. I reached home in the evening and made dinner. I used to struggle with cooking before, but now I can make a decent meal. On top of that, I earned 2000 beast currency.
The next day, I got a wonderful job offer. It made me so excited that I quickly accepted it. This job was illegal, and it carried its own risks. When the job was being introduced from one person to another, I made myself invisible and listened to their entire conversation. As soon as the person left, I asked if the task was possible. He smiled as if he was eager to spread the information, and he agreed happily.
I asked, "How will this work?"
He said, "You shouldn't worry much. I've prepared everything."
Basically, he would give me a black-market job. This kind of job is not done to protect people; instead, it is sold on the black market and given to people with strong magical power who can carry it out.
Fortunately, my job class was 16, as I had carried out the previous task perfectly. Since, after completing your first job, you can take a job up to 2 classes higher than your current class, this one was suitable for me. I wasn't feeling like I was truly fulfilling anything, but I thought that if I tried some new kinds of jobs, I might discover something useful.
So, I accepted the job.
I left soon after he told me the location and the task. Unfortunately, I needed two people to participate in this. So, I hired one worker. His name was Solan. He had a medium build, and I guessed he used combat magic because of his trained physique. He had a round face, small eyes, a thin nose, and his eyes showed that he had very little social experience.
My guess was correct—he was a swordsman. I talked to him.
"Do you want to do this job with me?"
"Yes," he replied in a very quiet tone.
"Hope we'll get along well and carry out this job perfectly," I said.
He answered, "Yeah, I'll help you in every way I can."
The job was to collect magic-enhancing water. This water is collected by the government to supply knights and other guards. It temporarily increases magical power. It is found in very small quantities, as it forms when water gets trapped underground for hundreds of years. This makes it extremely rare. The water absorbs mana from the earth, which becomes concentrated over time.
Since this magic water is reserved for the government and limited to knights and guards, collecting it is illegal. But in the black market, it sells for a very high price.
Doing this would earn me a lot of money. As the man told me, there wasn't any risk unless I got caught by government officials while collecting the water.
We reached the underground passage of the city. It was very deep, and it looked incredibly old. So old that the blocks used to build it were crumbling, and their colour had faded to a dull shade.
Also seemed like bats had made that their home. As, we moved forward now things were changing and a clean environment can now be easily seen. This led me to the conclusions that monsters may live there and soon as I thought the monsters attacked us. The format of fighting was simple as, Solan is a swordsman he has advantage in close combat so he will fight in close range and My magic abilities although work quite well in both ranges, I will support him from some distance.
BUT...
The number of monsters were more than we thought, and even if fight them with 10 more people we wouldn't survive. Although, Solan was keeping up good, but I told him that we need to switch plans. So, now it was simple I need to trap them in a spell so that they won't disturb us for some time and we can collect the magic water. Since, they were also using magic to attack us I made a wall to hold them up for some time, but I know the wall wouldn't hold long as the magic is quite low compared to their strength in numbers.
So, I hurry to fill that water also we won't need much as the job manager said 10 ml would be enough. But the wall broke in no time and Solan had to assist me due to his help I collected the water. Now, plan was to run as fast as possible to the thin passage so we can separate them from us by my magic but, their head reached us and started fighting us, So I am Solan had to assist each other for survival Solan is a great swordsman and uses strength and speed magic. But the enemy was on some other level all we could do was to dodge his attack his magic was quite well, think closer to a knight but not stronger.
On the other hand, Solan was at 14 class, and I was at 16. So, things were out of my reach, and we both had no other choice but to drink some of the magic water. As, we drank the magic water the strength flowed like a blood flow in a body. The aura around us changed high amount of mana waves was flowing from out from our bodies. The level was so high that it couldn't be detected by the other monsters.
Our body was filled with a chill breeze. And felt like this was our maximum strength, So, large that we can say it was close to a saint level. Now, since other monsters couldn't track our presence, it was time to knock their head and retrieve as soon as possible. We knew that the effect will not last long, so we hurried. I attacked him with a mix of ice and stone magic with biggest attacks as possible. I avoid fire and water attacks as they will create problems for us because we are deep underground.
Solan also kept up with me and got in close range and attacked at a speed. Due to two large attacks, he was driven away to a very far. As, he was driven away, he also started showing his powers and now things were getting interested. We both will attack at same time to make sure he doesn't dodge. Solan, was fighting in close and I am supporting him by block magic attack.
After a while as we were fighting now I asked Solan to make sure to hold for some time. I made a big spell by gathering all the magic I am capable of and then create a pit as big as possible. Also, Solan made a sword attack that was so fast and quick it cut a hand of the and killed all the monsters behind him in an instant, now Solan effect remains very less time. And as he attacked, I also launch my attack, which made all the monsters fall into the pit. I made a throw a boulder as large as the pit. It was so big that it can cover an eight-lane highway.
I made a thick wall of my remaining magic, and then we run as we were running the monster head throwed an attack which cut broke through the boulder and the wall and reached us my magic effect was over, and I spent all my mana due to which I couldn't block it, and I took a direct hit. It damaged my leg and now I wasn't able to move.
Solan made his attack to the ceiling causing the ceiling to fall and passage to get collapse. Solan carried me and we barely made it alive. But along with the magic water we also got something else, fall when the monster attacked us and due to which some walls destroyed. According to me it was hidden in a wall. It was a stone into which there was written something that couldn't be read by me.
But Solan could read it and said it is a contract stone. The contract you form with God to take some of his powers. He said, but why it was inserted in some wall.
After that we both went to our homes, Also I got to know that Solan lives in the same building. Solan, helped me to contact a doctor which came and treated me and solan wound. Solan wounds weren't very vital but his whole body has wounds So, it is also difficult for him to walk. Close range fighters usually get lot of wounds.
The job was executed quite well and since we used half of it. There still remains half that will give us money enough to not work 2 months. Also, I have got this contract stone which I can't read.
After 1 week
Most of my and Solan wounds were recovered. So, we went to sell the magic water, and it sold out for 100,000 beast currency from which we both divided halves. Then I went to show the contract stone to the magic item vendors, He said that all the gods that were summoned to protect beast issue a contract stone on which their name, type of magic and deal conditions are written. There are three contract stones of each god once you collect all you can sign contract with the god.
This Stone is of God- Achyuta
His powers are incredible, but he doesn't give anyone his powers and searching for other two stones will cause you more trouble as he tests his accomplice.
