Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Is That So?

When Maeve Lane arrived at Glyndower Center, Sarah Sutton had already been chatting with the director for over twenty minutes.

"Maeve, what took you so long? Quick, this is Director Chandler, the director for 'Illusionary Joy' this time."

A flicker of surprise passed through Maeve's eyes, but she didn't show it, "Director Chandler, hello."

Director Chandler, wearing glasses, had a look of deep appreciation in his eyes, "Not bad, Sutton, you have a good eye indeed."

Sarah winked at her before saying to Director Chandler, "The eye is satisfactory, but it still depends on whether you're willing to give her an opportunity."

Director Chandler said, "I can't decide all by myself, but considering her appearance, I'm quite satisfied. Bring her in for a screen test tomorrow."

"Alright!"

Director Chandler, a very busy person, exchanged a few more words with Sarah and Maeve before leaving.

Maeve glanced at the overjoyed Sarah, "Sutton, hasn't 'Illusionary Joy' already started shooting?"

Besides, the lead actress is Sylvia Lane.

"The originally cast third lead got injured with the wire actions yesterday. The crew is left with no choice but to find someone else. Luckily, I'm well-informed and didn't miss this opportunity."

The woman sitting across from Maeve cut into a piece of steak, "You should hurry and prepare. I'll send the audition material to your phone later."

Maeve didn't have much of an appetite, just sipped some juice and pulled her hat a bit lower, lost in thought.

Sarah looked at her, speaking earnestly, "Although Sylvia Lane doesn't seem like a good person at all, if you join the crew, don't make it too obvious. She has many fans, and they'd drown you in spit. Understand?"

Maeve lowered her eyes, "If she doesn't provoke me, I naturally won't bother with her."

Sarah knew about Maeve's temper. Though she seemed indifferent most of the time, once you crossed her, she'd fear no one, no matter who they were.

So, she threw in a few more words, reminding her, "Don't be too harsh. Stellaron Group's CEO is still in the hospital thanks to you. That kick of yours almost made it to the headlines. Fortunately, Best Actor Fairchild covered it up. This time, don't cause any trouble under his nose."

"Is your head alright now?"

Almost forgot, Julian Fairchild is the lead actor in this film.

Maeve disregarded the occasional pain that came and went, responding calmly, "It's fine."

A ringtone sounded from the phone on the dining table.

She glanced up; it was a call from Sylvia Lane.

"Sutton, I have to go," Maeve said.

Sarah, now hungry, gave a vague reply.

Maeve pressed the answer button.

Sylvia Lane's arrogant voice resonated—

"Maeve Lane! You dare show up in front of us?! Aren't you afraid Dad will break your legs when he finds out?!"

Maeve's eyes half-closed, "You're well-informed. I only just met with Director Chandler, and you already know?"

"Don't think I don't know what you're up to! You just want to get close to Fairchild! The engagement was originally between the Lane's eldest daughter and the Fairchild's second son. But not anymore! Fairchild is not someone you can long for! I am his future wife now!"

"Really?" Maeve thought back to the morning text Sylvia sent Julian, her eyes indifferent, "So confident, are you?"

Sylvia laughed mockingly, "Mrs. Fairchild is very satisfied with me as her future daughter-in-law. Don't think you can rely on your past with Fairchild. He already told his mother he doesn't like you anymore!"

He doesn't like you anymore.

Julian Fairchild...he introduced Sylvia Lane to his mother?

In two years of marriage, he never mentioned taking her to the family estate.

Maeve's heart stung as if pricked, her speech quickened seemingly to mask something, "How coincidental, I've long stopped liking him. Whoever he likes is none of my business."

A long, dreadful silence followed from the other end.

Just as Maeve was about to end the call, she heard a man's cold voice through the receiver—

"Really?"
