Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Getting Fire and Water

"Come, you come and listen." Xu Yi stood up and gave his place to Lu Ke.

Lu Ke immediately understood that there must be a sound, which was why Xu Yi wanted her to listen.

Sure enough, after lying down to listen for a moment, she could hear a 'rumble'.

Although it wasn't particularly loud, it was very clear.

This indicated that they were not far from the water source.

"Over there, over there!" Lu Ke excitedly jumped up and pointed in the direction ahead.

Her mouth was very thirsty, they hadn't encountered any food along the way, only Xu Yi had collected some dry moss, which now puffed up the pockets of Lu Ke's shirt. Xu Yi's pants pockets were also full.

"Let's go, we'll soon be able to drink water." Xu Yi grinned, then brushed the dirt off Lu Ke's face.

"You have some too," Lu Ke chuckled and reached out to brush the dirt off Xu Yi's face.

Then they both smiled at each other, feeling suddenly uplifted.

"Let's go get some water to drink. Once we have water, we can start setting up camp," Xu Yi said happily, knowing that fresh water resources are the most important for survival in the wilderness.

With water, even without staples, a broth of wild vegetables can help them last for ten days.

Of course, Xu Yi's goal was 500 days.

Knowing they could find water, Lu Ke quickened her pace.

Xu Yi glanced at the time, 9:34 AM, hopeful they could find the water source before 10.

This way, they would have more time to search for food and build a shelter.

With a shelter, and a food source, surviving for years wouldn't be a problem.

"Xu Yi, look quickly, a waterfall, it's a waterfall, we have water now."

Lu Ke shouted excitedly, pointing at the distant waterfall.

It was indeed a waterfall, pouring down from a very high place.

However, it was a bit different from what Xu Yi had imagined.

This was a Broken Valley, splitting the two sides apart.

"Xu Yi, what should we do now, should we go to the other side?" Lu Ke realized the difficulty and asked Xu Yi.

It was already 10:04 AM, and if they went to the other side, they might not have enough time in the day.

The bottom looked very steep, and crossing over would likely require a detour.

From their position, they couldn't see the full picture.

What should they choose?

Xu Yi also didn't know what to choose, continuing like this was not a good option.

"Let's make some salt, then fetch water. Store more water, and then we'll climb to a higher place to check the situation on the other side." Xu Yi made a decision, as there was still a chance to get water here.

The mist from the waterfall rose up, condensing and dripping down like rain. Therefore, fresh water could be collected here.

Of course, it would be time-consuming. The problem was that without other water sources, they could only collect fresh water this way.

"I'll dig a mud stove, you use a pot to collect a bit of rainwater," Xu Yi said, then put the plastic bag in the pot on the ground and handed the pot to Lu Ke.

Then he found an open space between the trees and started digging.

The distance from Lu Ke's spot was less than 2 meters, so if anything happened, he could immediately reach her.

In the live stream room, everyone expressed their sympathy for Xu Yi and Lu Ke's encounter.

"Alas, I thought the little loli was a koi, didn't expect her luck to be so bad."

"Yeah, encountering a Broken Valley is really unlucky. So they haven't seen any small animals because of the Broken Valley's relation, right?"

"The person above makes sense."

"Xu Yi's decision is quite right, they need to rehydrate now. If they don't, their bodies won't hold up."

"This mountain might not be completely cut off, they can't see the whole picture from this angle. I think Xu Yi will definitely continue to climb up later."

At this moment, Xu Yi was rapidly digging with the engineer shovel, and in less than 10 minutes, he had dug out a head-sized earthen pit.

Then, he flattened the top, dug a round hole in the space, and used a sharpened crossbow arrow to make a small chimney.

"Now we just need to make a simple fire bow." Xu Yi muttered to himself, then pulled out his belt.

This military-grade belt was a good thing, with an alloy buckle and the strap made of two layers of cowhide.

If the buckle melted, it could be forged into a small knife, making it another tool.

In the wilderness with nothing, you must make the most of each item, allowing it to play more roles.

This was the designer's concept when preparing these tools, so the engineer shovel's one side was as sharp as a blade, capable of cutting most things.

Xu Yi clamped the engineer shovel between his legs and began cutting the belt.

Soon, Xu Yi had six thin strips of belt in his hand, which was the limit he could divide into, any finer was impossible.

Each thin strip was 1.5 meters long, and Xu Yi took one out to make a fire bow, while the rest were tied to his belt, and the buckle was placed in his pocket.

The simple fire bow was easy to make, and Xu Yi immediately used a curved wooden stick to make one.

However, this simple fire bow was just for Xu Yi to transition and make an Iroquois Race-style fire tool, which was Xu Yi's ultimate goal.

The Iroquois Race-style fire tool needed a spindle, with one end wrapped with two ropes, the other end fixed to a hard crossbar. A wooden wheel was used as an accelerator in the middle of the spindle. Start by rotating the spindle, the rope would automatically wrap around it, then press the crossbar down. Due to the inertia, the rope would wrap in the opposite direction on the spindle, and the crossbar would be pressed up and down repeatedly. This method is highly efficient and reusable for lighting fires.

After all, in the wilderness, there were no flints or tinderboxes.

So, some teams chose endless matches.

However, to make this Iroquois-style fire tool, a wooden wheel must first be obtained. Therefore, Xu Yi would first make a simple fire bow to drill a hole in the wooden wheel, in passing, attempt to make fire.

Xu Yi sawed a small tree about the thickness of an arm, then took a 2 cm thick wooden wheel and began to drill a hole in the middle while trying to make fire.

After drilling for over ten minutes, smoke began to emerge, Xu Yi quickly placed the dry moss on top.

He continuously pulled on the hand bow, and the smoke became denser.

Inside the live stream room, things started to get lively.

Everyone was speculating whether Xu Yi could successfully start a fire.

As you know, fire is indispensable for survival in the wilderness. It not only provides warmth and water, but sometimes also wards off animal attacks.
