Chapter 31 – The End of a King

Sin Ka sat before his brother in strange calm, his eyes glimmering with that cold, merciless gaze that carried not a trace of pity. He stared into the tear-streaked face of his brother, a face broken beneath the weight of betrayal and despair. Sen Han looked like a lost child who had been stripped of everything, begging with trembling lips and a shattered heart. But Sin Ka's eyes offered no mercy; their cruelty only deepened, like twin blades severing the last thread of hope.

He spoke in a steady, even tone, as though his words were an undeniable truth:

"You were my target from the very beginning. I truly wanted to control you, but my gift does not work on those stronger than me. And you, my dear brother… you are far stronger than I. But…"

A cold smile twisted across his lips, one steeped in devilish malice. His voice swelled with arrogance as he continued:

"But your wife… your daughter… your son… your whole family of wretches… they are all far weaker than me. Which means controlling them will be nothing more than amusement—like playing with a helpless child who knows nothing."

With those words, Sin Ka patted his brother's shoulder in a taunting gesture, then let out a high, broken laugh that echoed through the dark hall. A demonic laugh that ripped the heart of the king seated before him.

In that moment, Sen Han's face was consumed by a terrifying storm of emotions: rage, sorrow, vengeance, hatred. They crashed within him like waves slamming against the rock of betrayal. He looked at his brother and saw nothing but a monstrous demon, a human mask hiding a vile beast thirsty for blood.

He reached out, trying to seize his brother and end everything with one decisive grasp. But before his will could take form, a long sword pierced suddenly through his back. It tore into his body with lethal cruelty, ripped through his heart, and burst from his chest, pinning him to the ground as though death itself had driven its claws into his flesh.

The king raised his head with unbearable effort, his eyes drowning in pain so deep it begged for death—yet not death dealt in such treachery. His trembling gaze lifted, only to discover that the hand which had struck him belonged to none other than his gentle wife, Sen Hao.

A strange smile marked her face as she drove the blade into his chest. A fixed smile, unblinking. Yet when her eyes met his, filled with ruin and betrayal, tears cascaded down her cheeks in torrents. The sight was harrowing: a face smiling while the eyes wept. A smile stolen by force, and tears that reflected the tortured soul within.

Her tears fell endlessly as she stared at her bleeding husband, as though she longed to scream: Forgive me… I had no choice… But her lips remained chained to that false smile.

Sin Ka rose to his feet, his voice booming with cruel mockery:

"Do you feel it now? The helplessness? The grief? The pain? The rage?"

Then he burst into laughter, loud and powerful, crashing like thunder across the shadowed hall:

"These, my dear brother… these are my feelings! I lived with them for all those long years… and now, it is time for you to taste a piece of my agony!"

With confident strides, he walked toward the throne and sat upon it as if he had claimed the throne of the entire world. He leaned back in ease, his arms spread wide, his face glowing with the satisfaction of victory.

"I am the king now!" he declared in a firm voice that brooked no denial.

Sen Hao stammered through her trembling sobs, her tears still streaming without end:

"Y-yes… my dear… you are the king now…"

The words spilled broken from her lips, soaked with submission and despair. But her tears would not stop, falling like rain on a stormy night.

At that moment, Sin Ka moved his hand, and from it surged a ripple of dark violet energy. It poured like a terrifying tide into Sen Hao's body. Within seconds, her expression changed completely; her tears dried as if erased, replaced by a fixed, cold smile. She stepped forward calmly and sat beside Sin Ka as though she were a queen who had chosen of her own will to be his consort.

Sin Ka clapped his hands twice. The massive palace doors swung open, revealing four guards. They saw the body of their fallen king sprawled across the floor, yet their faces showed neither grief nor shock. They stood like empty dolls awaiting the command of their new master.

With a gesture, Sin Ka ordered them. Two bent down, lifted the corpse, and disappeared into the shadows with it. The other two busied themselves wiping away the blood that had stained the floor of the hall. Soon, no trace of the king remained—only the lingering stench of death.

Sin Ka smiled darkly, his thoughts turning:

"I had planned to kill the little princess, but it seems she has a gift much like mine… perhaps…"

He paused in reflection for several minutes. Then his violet eyes flared with fire as he lifted his head and declared:

"A change of plans… yes, a complete change."

He turned to one of the guards and commanded:

"Take Queen Sen Hao to her new cell."

The guard bowed respectfully, then led the queen away. Her false smile did not waver, and she followed him calmly, as though perfectly content.

As for Sin Ka, he stepped forward once, and with that single step, his figure vanished from the hall, swallowed by shadow.

In a chamber on the second floor, the young princess sat training her gift. Sweat streamed down her body, her face flushed from exhaustion and concentration. Suddenly, she halted, opening her eyes in frustration, whispering to herself:

"Damn it… I almost achieved a breakthrough in my gift…"

She sighed deeply, but her thoughts were cut off by sudden knocks on her door. Wiping the sweat lightly from her face, she moved to open it. Yet the moment she turned the handle, the door was thrust violently open, and a massive man stepped inside, seizing her shoulder with crushing force.

From his palm flared a blinding violet light that sank into her body. Her frame shuddered, her eyes flickered with fear, but within minutes the fear was gone, replaced by a faint, calm smile—cold as ice.

In a soft, delicate voice she asked:

"What are your plans, Uncle?"

The moonlight streaming from the window gleamed across the man's face, revealing those cursed violet eyes. It was none other than Sin Ka himself.

"Everything is going according to plan…" he answered, his smile filled with danger and certainty.

He left the princess's chamber with confident strides, leaving behind a heavy trail of betrayal and ruin.

---

Morning dawned once more upon the kingdom. At daybreak, the princess requested that all the people gather before the palace. Within minutes, nearly all the citizens of Sunlight City had assembled, their faces tense, their hearts uneasy. The guards told them only that the princess had an important announcement.

At last, the princess emerged from the third floor and stood before the vast crowd. She wore a somber black dress, her face veiled in black cloth. Her eyes were swollen red from crying, and tears still streamed down her cheeks.

Her trembling voice rang out:

"It grieves me to tell you that…"

She paused, her sorrow choking her, before she forced herself to continue:

"That King Sen Han… my beloved father… was assassinated last night."

The crowd was struck dumb. A suffocating silence smothered the square. No one moved, no one breathed; the fall of a pin would have thundered in their ears. And then, all at once, the people burst into cries and wails.

Some screamed, others collapsed to the ground, still others refused to believe, insisting it was a lie. But the truth was too merciless to deny.

King Sen Han had been a just ruler, one who governed with fairness, punished the oppressor no matter his rank, and protected the weak without hesitation. He had been beloved by young and old, rich and poor alike. And with his death, the entire kingdom trembled as though a volcano had erupted beneath it.

The whole city entered mourning for its brave and righteous king.

But behind the curtain of grief, there were two who smiled with cruel delight: Sin Ka, and Princess Sen Mi, who had fallen prey to his control.

---

A week later, Prince Sen Ko returned, his heart swelling with pride, having completed the mission his father had entrusted to him. He expected the city to greet him with celebration, with bright faces lifted in joy. Instead, he was met with expressions heavy with sorrow and disappointment, eyes cast down that could not bear to meet his.

His heart faltered in confusion. He rushed forward, his steps quickening toward the palace. Sweat poured from his brow and drenched his body, and with every step he heard the murmured condolences of the people, their words of mourning tearing his spirit to shreds.

He ran like a madman, his heart screaming:

No… no… what they say isn't true… Father is alive! Father is still alive… yes, he is safe… he must be safe…

He burst into the palace and into the grand hall, though his heart trembled with dread of what he might find…
