Chapter 40

The End of the Matter

Einver approached the princess, who had completely fainted after the death of her uncle. He grabbed her by the hair and lifted her body into the air. The princess opened her eyes, but they were no longer those deceitful, manipulative eyes—rather, they were pure and innocent, shining with the clarity of a clean heart. This only stirred within Einver a deep sense of disgust and revulsion.

Before he could utter a word, the princess cried out, her voice trembling with fear and confusion:

"Who are you? What do you want from me? Tell me!"

Then her gaze shifted to the side, and she saw her uncle's severed head. She began to cry, overwhelmed with shock and sorrow. Though she had hated her uncle, she had not wanted him dead. Inside her, in both mind and heart, she was still that same princess from three years ago. Everything around her felt strange and alien. The last thing she remembered was training in her chamber, then her uncle's arrival… and then her memories vanished.

"You're a criminal! You're the one who killed my uncle, aren't you? Why did you kill him? Why do you want to kill me? What has my family ever done to you for you to do this?"

Einver looked at her in confusion, wondering to himself:

What is going on here? What is this girl babbling about? Don't tell me she…

Before he could finish his thought, the princess screamed again:

"Uncle Mai Na… Mai Ko!"

She cried out in anguish from the depths of her heart, then stared at Einver in shock and disbelief:

"Are you a monster or what? How dare you lay your hand on a weak old man and his little daughter? What has my family done to you for you to do this? Tell me!"

Einver wanted to silence her, for in that moment he truly despised her. Though he had a vague idea of what was happening, he could not bear her accusations. To be blamed for killing her uncle, for torturing Mai Na and his daughter—that was more than he could tolerate.

He raised his hand and struck her stomach with such force that she vomited from the blow. He hit her again and again, then slammed her onto the ground violently. Still, she did not lose consciousness.

Einver grabbed her head tightly and smashed it into the ground once more. This time, she finally fainted.

He wanted to throw her out of the room, but then he heard a voice stopping him. He turned his head to find the old man, Mai Na, barely able to speak. Einver walked toward him and said:

"What do you want, old man?"

With great difficulty, the old man opened his mouth and said:

"Don't kill her, young master, please! She wasn't in her right mind. She was under the control of her evil uncle, doing everything by his command. None of it was by her own will."

Einver was truly baffled by his words.

"How can you say that? This whore wanted to kill you and your daughter! She took your son to drain his spiritual energy, and yet you want to let her live? Are you a fool, or has old age made you senile?"

He ended his words with eyes burning with anger and contempt as he stared at the old man.

"I beg you, release her. I beg you!"

Einver sighed, then said:

"Fine. I will… but on one condition. Choose between them."

He finished speaking, his gaze still fixed on the old man with fury and true disdain.

"Between who?" the old man asked, trembling at Einver's demonic smile, where a blood-red light flickered in his eyes.

"Choose: Do you want the princess to live, or your daughter? One dies, the other lives. Hurry up—I don't have all day."

Einver had not placed the old man in this position for no reason. Despite his current madness, he still had some control, still knew right from wrong. But he truly wanted to kill the princess for her deeds, and he needed to know if Mai Na genuinely wanted to save her, or if he would change his mind.

The old man lowered his head, trembling, then wept bitterly. Raising his head, he said:

"Let the princess live."

Einver was stunned by the answer; he had expected the exact opposite.

"Why? Why do you want the princess to live? What about your daughter? Do you want her to die?"

The old man wept, his heart writhing in agony:

"No, of course I don't want my daughter to die. She is all I have, the only joy in this wretched life. But as a servant of the royal family, I swore long ago to the king that I would sacrifice myself and my family for his son, his daughter, and their kin. And I am a man of my oath and my word.

At that time, I fled. I couldn't help the royal family, I couldn't warn them or do anything. From that moment, I swore that if I was ever given a second chance, I would do the right thing.

The princess is the hope of Sunlight City. Without her, who will rule? The prince and his mother have been tortured for so long they've forgotten what it means to live. I've seen them in prison recently—they're not even human anymore. They've lost everything that makes them human.

And even if they recover, the prince is not wise—he loves deadly battles and brute strength, not politics or clever rule. The great queen is too old, and she's no martial artist; the throne will never be given to her. Without the princess, Sunlight City will fall. And if it falls, neither I, nor my daughter, nor anyone else here will survive. We'll be invaded from all sides, and without a ruler, we'll be slaughtered like worms. Please… let the princess live."

The old man finished speaking, tears still streaming down his face, his gaze fixed on his daughter, who had clung to Einver's leg this entire time.

Einver looked down at his leg, seeing the little girl clinging tightly. He gently lifted her by her hands and pulled her against his chest, holding her softly. He looked at her face—it was disfigured, her eyes swollen, her body covered in wounds and marks of torture.

All this time, Mai Na had kept his head bowed before Einver, tears never ceasing. When he had first met Einver, he had seen a kind and brave young man within him, someone who reminded him of his own son, someone who did not hurt others without reason. But now, that kind youth had become a murderous demon. He had slain Sin Ka in cold blood, killed a soldier, and wanted to kill the princess despite her apparent innocence. Now he was forcing him to choose between his daughter and his sworn princess.

Mai Na could not raise his head. He remained bowed, murmuring:

"I'm sorry. I've failed you, my daughter. Forgive your old father who could not save you."

He could not imagine, even for a moment, that Einver was still the same old Einver—one who had only grown furious and crossed lines for their sake, unwilling to kill them in cold blood.

Moments later, a window appeared before Einver's eyes:

| Congratulations, you have created a new technique: Jimamero no Yami (Bloody Darkness).

By merging your bloody darkness aura with the martial arts world you are now in, you are able to fight those above your realm as equals. Not only that, but anyone who enters your domain who is weaker than you, or could fight you due to enhanced auras, will now be unable to move, thanks to the fusion of the Mad Killer title with your auras. The duration of this technique is 5 minutes, but if there are many targets, the time will decrease gradually, requiring stronger physical training and breakthroughs into higher realms. |

Right after, another window appeared:

| Due to your prolonged use of this technique, and your breakthrough into a new realm, your body can no longer withstand the immense pressure. Please deactivate the technique. |

Einver sighed, then stored his sword away. With a single thought, it vanished into his storage. He suppressed his dominating aura and looked at the old man:

"Old man, you know I would never truly make you choose between your daughter and anything else. I only wanted to see to what extent you were willing to go for this whore. Don't worry—I will never harm your daughter. Here."

He handed the unconscious girl over.

The old man raised his head, overjoyed, smiling through his tears as he extended his arms to receive his daughter.

Einver said:

"Old man, take care of her. Never put anything above her. If you do, you will live in darkness forever. Protect her with all your strength. This world doesn't need another broken person like me."

Mai Na looked at Einver with pain, sorrow, and gratitude.

"Don't worry, boy. And thank you for saving us… thank you."

Before Einver could reply, a wave of crushing pressure and unbearable pain spread through his body. His eyes began to close—this battle, the breakthrough, the use of the Bloody Darkness technique, all had pushed him beyond his limits. He longed to simply shut his eyes and fall into sleep.

But before he could, he heard the old man's desperate cry:

"Don't do it, Princess! Please!"

Summoning what little strength he had left, Einver turned his head and body. A sword was hurtling toward him. The princess, her forehead bleeding, eyes filled with grief and fury, was charging at him with the weapon in her hands.

Einver had no strength left. He gathered all that remained within him to dodge the strike. He avoided it—but not without cost. A surge of indescribable pain ripped through his left hand, followed by the sound of a violent impact.

Then Einver's face hit the ground. Darkness consumed him, and he fainted.
