Chapter 27 - chapter 17

We've done it," James breathed out in awe, looking at Jacob and Essa. "We now possess the most powerful substance in all the galaxy. No longer will we be looked down upon by the other five planets, they no longer will ignore us but fear our limitless potential."

"They will indeed darling," Essa encouraged, "and you, my love, will be the one to usher in this new age. No king that has sat on this throne before you can lay claim to that."

James turned to his nearest guard and grinned. "Have the messengers send word to all five planets saying that House Porter of Planet Potara will be hosting a showcase one week from now. To arrive early in the morning and be prepared for great things."

The guard nodded and left quickly and each of the five power planets received their invitation to the showcase. As the invitations spread across the five power planets, anticipation and anxiety began to build. The other leaders, accustomed to their dominance, were taken aback by the sudden boldness of King James and his kingdom as he promised to revolutionize the galaxy with his new showcase.

King James prepared for the showcase with grand ambition, determined to demonstrate the power of House Porter. He envisioned a spectacle that would not only reveal their power but also reshape the balance of authority in the galaxy. The stage was set for a confrontation of wills, where alliances might shift, and rivalries could ignite.

As the day approached, the atmosphere grew electric with uncertainty. Would the other planets unite against this new threat, or would they be compelled to acknowledge King James's reign? Moreso, would Eya finally give them respect as they found protection from her, or would they have created a far more frightening enemy of her?

The day of the showcase arrived quickly, and neighboring planets started to arrive. Fleets of ships started to pull into the docks, each house greeted by a steward of James. First to arrive was House Pantheon, led by Eya. With a gaze that could pierce the heavens, she looked at the steward with disbelief.

"I hope, for your king's sake, this showcase proves worthy of my time," she remarked.

The steward, bowing with reverence, responded, "Your Highness, I assure you, it will far exceed your expectations." He signaled for another steward to come over to guide Eya to the showcase arena.

Next to arrive was House Eros, a house that sent shivers through the galaxy. Led by the fearsome King Cole, known for his merciless warriors and ruthless conquests, his reputation was built on blood and glory. With a sneer that could cut through the sharpest metals, he arrived, his arrogance palpable as he surveyed the scene like a predator eyeing its prey. He cared little for anything but success, and failure was a word that didn't exist in his vocabulary.

"Thank you for gracing our humble showcase, Your Majesty," the steward stammered, his efforts to mask his nervousness futile.

"The pleasure of my presence on a pathetic planet like this is all yours," King Cole scoffed, his disdain evident. "A planet like this shouldn't be hosting such prestigious royalty."

"I'm sure you'll change your mind once you see what we have to offer," the steward replied, attempting to sound optimistic.

House Helios, known for its progressive approach to leadership, arrived next in grand style. Unlike traditional bloodline monarchies, they held elections every ten years to select their ruler, fostering a culture of humility and gratitude in their leaders. King Hector and his son, Prince Magnus, embodied these values, appreciating every opportunity and honor.

Their arrival was warmly welcomed, with hosts expressing gratitude for the chance to entertain such esteemed guests. The steward guided them to their seats at the arena, where they anticipated the showcase with great interest.

As time passed without any sign of the last two power planets, the stewards grew increasingly restless. "If we wait much longer, the showcase will begin without us," one steward remarked anxiously.

"It's better to wait than face the king's wrath," another replied.

The invitation clearly stated when the showcase would commence, yet no ships were in sight. "I'm sure the king will understand our reluctance to miss such a monumental occasion," another steward added. Just as the three stewards were about to head to the arena, they heard an aircraft approaching. They stopped immediately, turning to see who it was.

The ship landed and the doors opened, out stepping King Griffin of House Sekham, a flamboyant ruler who thrived on bending the rules. The youngest of the six power planets' rulers, he was a playboy who cared only for riches and beautiful women.

"Stylishly late, I see, King Griffin!" one of the stewards shouted.

"If you knew me, steward, you'd know I don't adhere to time restraints," King Griffin replied with a smirk.

"Being on time ensures you don't miss out on this life-changing opportunity, Your Highness," the steward insisted.

"Well, I'm here, aren't I? Stylishly late, as always," King Griffin retorted.

"Please, follow us, King Griffin." The king and his entourage followed the stewards to the arena. Upon arrival, the stewards showed them to their seats and quickly went to find James.

"My king," one of the stewards announced, "I regret to inform you that House Iris didn't show."

"Do not worry. We received word that King Samuel wouldn't be attending. He considers me to be a stain on the six houses; a king who was given a throne and knows nothing about ruling. How did he put it? Ah, yes: 'A king earns his throne; it is not given to him.' But since when did having the right blood mean something was earned? The foolish old man is stuck in the past. The sooner he realizes those days are over, the better it will be for his kingdom," James said confidence flowing.

"You're right, my king. Once word spreads of what they witness here today, he will have no choice but to acknowledge you."

With that, the king rose and entered the arena. He strode confidently to the center, his presence commanding immediate attention.

"Welcome, all," James began, his voice resonating through the expectant silence. "I am truly humbled by the multitude gathered here for our transcendent showcase. Today, I promise you an experience like no other as we usher in a new era."

With a dramatic pause, James gestured toward the back of the arena. Soldiers emerged, dragging a long dolly behind them. As they reached the king, he dramatically unveiled the contents, a collection of weapons and shields. The audience leaned forward, puzzled by the apparent ordinariness of the display.

James picked up a traditional shield and tossed it to one of his soldiers. Then, with deliberate flair, he lifted a sleek blaster. "My esteemed guests, observe," he announced. "This shield, as you know, is what our warriors have long relied upon. But this," he declared, holding up the blaster, "is the future."

With a swift motion, James signaled his warrior to take position. The arena fell silent as the king fired. The blaster's shot rang out, and the shield shattered spectacularly, the pieces scattering across the arena floor. Gasps of disbelief echoed through the crowd as jaws dropped, eyes wide with awe.

James returned to the dolly, retrieving a wrist device. "Now, witness true innovation." He tossed the device to the warrior, who secured it around his wrist. Instantly, a shimmering blue hologram shield projected, glowing with an otherworldly light.

He lifted another blaster, grinning at the audience. "This is the traditional blaster," he explained, brandishing it for all to see before firing directly at the holographic shield. The blast dissipated harmlessly, leaving the shield untouched and the crowd in stunned silence.

"You see," James proclaimed triumphantly, "I have rediscovered icodine, the legendary substance we believed lost to history."

King Cole, seated among the spectators, was visibly taken aback. "So, the stories my father told me are true," he murmured, his surprise swiftly giving way to a broad grin of delight.

The arena erupted in applause and cheers, the spectacle leaving an indelible impression on all who witnessed it.

As the showcase came to an end, a charged silence suddenly fell over the ground. Eya strode toward James, her eyes blazing with fury.

"How dare you keep such a monumental secret from me!" she yelled, gesturing at the devices and narrowing her gaze on him. "Have you forgotten you're only king because of me?"

James stood firm, his expression unyielding. "Queen Eya, while I am appreciative of everything you have done, I only put my people first." His face shifted into a slight sneer, "Just as you do."

King Cole interjected, his voice sharp and demanding. "How do you propose we divide the icodine?"

"Yes, I would like to know as well," King Griffin added.

"Divide?" James's voice dripped with disdain. "My planet has endured enough ridicule, mocked as a laughing stock. I've heard the whispers: bottom feeders, pathetic excuse of a planet, and an unworthy king."

King Hector stepped forward, attempting to diffuse the tension. "Whilst I've also heard those whispers, I do not share the same views as my counterparts. I welcomed your reign as king with open arms."

James shot back, his voice a whip. "Yet you sat in the shadows and did nothing as the rest of the houses tore down my name."

"But you were bottom feeders, riches far less than all of our planets and low resources. They are all truthful statements, something you shouldn't punish us for. It's not our fault," King Griffin retorted, his tone defensive.

"Punish you?" James scoffed, a fierce determination in his eyes. "I'm offering a fair deal. You'll buy your weapons, shields, and resources from me."

Queen Eya's voice rose, desperate and fiery. "James, don't let ego be your downfall. We can all advance and gain from the power of icodine."

James's gaze was icy and resolute. "Need I remind you we came to you with our hands out asking for help and you refused? As you said Queen Eya, the deal stands."

Eya turned to her sister, pleading. "Sister, make him see reason."

Essa's eyes were hard, her voice unwavering. "You dismissed me when I needed you most. Family didn't matter then, and it doesn't now. Life is about choices, and you made the wrong choice walking out of my life for all these years. But worry not sister because, like a phoenix, my house will rise from the ashes reborn."

"This isn't over." King Cole's parting words were a dark promise. With a dramatic sweep, he turned on his heel, leading the others away into the shadows, leaving the tension simmering like a storm on the horizon.
