Chapter 64 - Chapter 64: New Waters and New Bonds

The Mahindra Thar's engine hummed softly as Arjun Sharma steered away from the hospital, the first light of dawn brushing the Mumbai skyline with shades of orange and pink. Shalini Patel sat beside him, her sprained ankle resting on a cushion, the faint antiseptic scent from the first-aid kit in the backseat blending with the salty breeze sneaking through the cracked window. The city's vibrant pulse—distant rickshaw horns and the rhythmic call of a chai wallah—faded as they left Smita Nair's stunned figure behind, her silence a stark contrast to the emotional turmoil they'd just navigated. Arjun glanced at Shalini, her grateful smile a steadying force, the Midlife Mastery System's recent reward of the Andheri Phase II apartment still echoing in his thoughts.

By mid-morning, they reached a quaint café near Fitzon Gym in Andheri, the clatter of cups and the rich aroma of brewing tea enveloping them as they settled into a corner booth. The soft hum of conversation provided a calming backdrop as Arjun sipped his cutting chai, the warm liquid a comfort. A soft chime from the system interrupted his reverie: "Task Update: Replace daily 2-kilometer run with swimming (5,000 rupees per check-in) to protect your knees. Begin today." A wave of unease settled over him. Having grown up in the rugged hills of Nashik, where swimming was a foreign skill, the prospect felt intimidating despite his Strength of 72.

Turning to Shalini, whose bandaged ankle rested on a chair, Arjun broached the topic. "Shalini, my knees are aching from all that running. What do you think about swimming instead?" She leaned forward, her eyes lighting up with the enthusiasm of a dedicated trainer at Fitzon Gym. "It's perfect aerobic exercise—low impact, great for joints, and it builds stamina. I can get you a free pool pass at the gym." Arjun shook his head, a warm yet firm smile on his face. "No, I'll pay for it. I want to do this the right way, Shalini." Her admiration flickered, impressed by his principled approach as she nodded in agreement.

Curiosity piqued, Arjun took another sip and asked casually, "What if someone bought Fitzon Gym? What's it worth?" Shalini's eyebrows rose, a cautious note in her voice. "1–2 Crore rupees, but I'd advise against it. Profits are slim, and some membership deals are shady—hidden fees, pushy sales. It's a tough business." Arjun nodded thoughtfully, tucking the insight away, his mind already assessing the risks. His thoughts shifted to Smita's volatile outburst at the hospital. "Shalini, don't go back to that flat yet," he advised, his tone serious. "Smita's mood is unpredictable. Stay at the Andheri Phase II apartment—it's safer and closer to Fitzon." Her expression softened, gratitude and relief mingling in her gaze.

The system-awarded Andheri Phase II apartment, a compact 1200 square Feet two-bedroom unit, wasn't the lavish spread he'd envisioned, but it suited Shalini and her single aunt perfectly. Though less desirable than larger flats, its location was a clear advantage. Arjun leaned in, his voice gentle. "Rent it for 1,000 rupees a month—my way of helping." Shalini's jaw dropped, her voice trembling. "Arjun Sir, that's worth 1.5 million! Are you sure?" The system chimed: "+5 Favorability (45/100). Next stage unlocked: 10 Crore rupees exclusive spending." Her trust in him deepened, her eyes wide with awe.

Overwhelmed, Shalini clasped her hands, a shy smile breaking through. "Arjun Sir, you're like a pie from the sky—wealth, kindness, and that youthful charm. My ideal 'daddy boyfriend'!" Her words spilled out in a flustered rush. Arjun chuckled, catching her drift. "Wait, you think I'd stay over? I've got Priya and Ananya waiting at home." She blushed crimson, stammering, "Oh, no, I didn't mean—sorry!" His teasing grin eased the awkwardness, and he added, "I'll head back to them tonight."

Later, Arjun discreetly collected the apartment keys , presenting the clean, furnished unit to Shalini. The modern kitchen gleamed, the bedrooms offered cozy retreats, and the fresh paint carried a newness that delighted her. "It's perfect for my aunt!" she exclaimed, sinking into the sofa. As they settled, her phone buzzed. Smita's text read: "Are you dating Arjun? Staying out all night?" Jealousy laced her words, misunderstanding Shalini's situation. Shalini sighed, her fingers hovering over the reply, wrestling with their strained bond.
