Chapter 57 - When the System Watches Back

The silence that followed my strike was wrong.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

Wrong in the way a predator goes quiet before it decides whether to kill.

The red lightning still crackled faintly around my arm, the air buzzing with residual charge. Dust drifted slowly through the ruined pathway, illuminated by the fading glow of my attack.

The yokai staggered.

Not fell.

Staggered.

Its massive frame lurched backward, shadowy flesh distorting where the electricity had torn through it. The impact had disrupted something fundamental—its form flickered, density fluctuating violently, as if reality itself couldn't decide what it was supposed to be.

For the first time since arriving here—

It reacted.

The woman's expression changed.

Not fear.

Not panic.

Interest.

Her lips parted slightly, eyes narrowing as she studied the damage with open fascination.

"Oh?" she murmured.

That single sound sent a chill down my spine.

[SYSTEM INTERFACE — UPDATE DETECTED]

The black screen flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then text appeared.

[SYSTEM LOG]

Unexpected outcome detected.

My chest tightened.

"…What?" I muttered.

The System had never acknowledged surprise before.

The yokai straightened slowly, rolling its shoulders as shadowy substance poured back into the damaged area, sealing the wound—but not perfectly. Thin red arcs of electricity still crawled across its torso, snapping violently as if refusing to dissipate.

It growled.

Low.

Deep.

Angry.

[SYSTEM LOG]

Hostile entity displays agitation.

"Good," I said through clenched teeth. "That means it hurt."

My legs trembled—not from fear, but accumulated damage. My ribs screamed every time I inhaled. Blood dripped from my chin, dark spots splattering against the stone path between the angel statues.

The System didn't miss it.

[SYSTEM LOG]

Jae Hoon is bleeding. Estimated blood loss: moderate.

"Shut up," I hissed.

The woman didn't move.

Didn't lift a finger.

Didn't signal the yokai.

She just watched.

Her arms folded loosely behind her back as if she were attending a private exhibition.

The yokai lunged.

The ground cracked beneath its feet as it closed the distance in a single step, massive arm sweeping toward my head with enough force to pulverize stone.

I dropped low, sliding beneath the strike as wind pressure alone tore chunks from the statues behind me.

[SYSTEM LOG]

Jae Hoon narrowly avoided cranial annihilation.

I grimaced. "You're enjoying this way too much."

I rolled to my feet and sprinted—not away, but around it.

Observe. Adapt. Calculate.

Its movements were fast, but not random.

Every attack followed a pattern.

Weight shift. Density increase. Strike.

It has to solidify to hit me.

Which meant—

It sacrifices speed for power.

I leapt, planting my foot against a fallen angel's wing and springing upward. Red electricity surged through my muscles, accelerating my movement beyond what my body should have allowed.

The yokai looked up.

Too late.

I brought both blades down—

And they bounced.

The impact rattled my arms violently as sparks erupted where steel met shadow.

I barely twisted away before its backhand sent me flying.

I crashed hard, skidding across broken stone, pain exploding through my spine.

[SYSTEM LOG]

Jae Hoon's attack failed. Structural resistance exceeded expectations.

I groaned.

Still not enough.

The woman tilted her head.

She took a single step forward.

Didn't enter the fight.

But the pressure in the air spiked.

My instincts screamed.

[SYSTEM LOG]

Secondary hostile presence is exerting passive pressure. Threat level recalibrating.

The System sounded… strained.

That was new too.

The yokai attacked again.

This time faster.

I barely blocked, blades crossing as its fist slammed into them. The force crushed me into the ground, stone exploding beneath my back.

My vision blurred.

Focus.

Electricity flared instinctively—but I forced it down.

No wasted output.

Control.

Precision.

I remembered something from before.

When lightning struck sand.

Glass.

Fusion.

Heat + pressure + silica = vitrification.

I slammed my palm into the ground.

Red lightning didn't explode outward.

It spread.

Thin, branching arcs raced through the sand-filled cracks of the pathway, superheating particles instantly. Stone fused. Sand melted.

The ground beneath the yokai's feet hardened unnaturally fast.

Its next step—

Slipped.

Just slightly.

But enough.

[SYSTEM LOG]

Environmental manipulation detected. Strategy deviation acknowledged.

I surged forward, channeling electricity into my legs, compressing output to maximize acceleration.

Density spike incoming.

Timing—now.

I struck not with my blades—

But with my fist.

Red lightning detonated point-blank against the yokai's chest, forcing its shadowy mass to solidify fully for a fraction of a second.

That was the mistake.

Steel pierced shadow.

Both blades drove deep into its torso.

The yokai roared, sound tearing through the ruins like a shockwave.

I was thrown back again—but this time—

It was wounded.

Not superficial.

Not dispersing instantly.

The woman's smile vanished.

Her eyes sharpened, locking fully onto me.

"…Fascinating," she said quietly.

[SYSTEM LOG]

Combat parameters exceeded predictive model. Host classification updated.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

The yokai ripped the blades free, black substance spilling like liquid night. Its form wavered violently now, struggling to stabilize.

It glared at me.

Hatred.

Pure.

Unfiltered.

[SYSTEM LOG]

Hostile entity's kill intent has intensified. Survival probability decreasing.

I laughed weakly.

"Yeah," I coughed. "I figured."

The woman finally spoke again.

"I was going to let this continue longer," she said. "But now…"

She took another step forward.

The air bent.

The ruins groaned.

Even the System hesitated.

[SYSTEM LOG]

Warning—external variable exceeding System authority.

I wiped blood from my mouth, stance steady despite my shaking limbs.

"No winners yet," I said under my breath.

The yokai roared and charged.

And I moved to meet it—

Calculating.

Adapting.

Refusing to fall.

[SYSTEM LOG]

Jae Hoon advanced toward the enemy despite overwhelming odds.

The System paused.

Then added one final line.

[SYSTEM LOG]

Observation ongoing.
