Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: The Lizard, Taken Down in One Blow

The monstrous Lizard.

The web-slinging Spider-Man dangling behind him.

And Gwen, frozen in shock.

Hawk didn't hesitate. He yanked Gwen close, spun mid-step, and put his own back between her and the incoming claws.

SMASH!

The Lizard's strike sent him crashing down the stairwell, slamming through a bookshelf below. Wood splintered, books scattered, students screamed and bolted from the library.

"Hawk!" Gwen cried.

The Lizard hissed, stepping down the stairs like a predator. "Blood. Give me your blood!"

So it was him he was after.

Hawk rose, brushing off the dust. He barely felt the blow, though his shirt was a mess. But… if the monster was after him, then why had that first strike aimed so squarely at Gwen?

That wasn't paranoia—it was instinct.

He'd considered grabbing Gwen and vanishing at supersonic speed. But in that split-second, Hawk saw the truth: the acceleration would shred her body apart. Air resistance alone could rip her to pieces.

So he chose to take the hit.

Not because of fear of exposure—he didn't care if the world knew his strength. He'd already killed when needed, already risked being hunted by the military. This wasn't about hiding.

This was about keeping Gwen alive.

"You okay?" he asked, eyes still locked on the Lizard.

Gwen, shaken but unharmed, nodded quickly.

"Watch out!" she gasped.

CRASH!

The monster's tail whipped a desk across the room. Hawk met it head-on, a single punch reducing it to splinters midair.

"Get outside," Hawk ordered.

Up on the wall, Spider-Man clung like a true arachnid. "Careful! His strength—it's way higher than before!"

Peter had fought him on the bridge. Back then, Connors' power was one thing. Now, it was triple that.

Still, Hawk only gave a calm nod.

Gwen bit her lip. "You be careful too."

"I will." Hawk's smile was brief, but certain.

She turned to run—

—but the Lizard's eyes narrowed, muscles coiled. With a hiss, he launched straight for Gwen again!

"Damn it!" Peter shouted, firing twin webs. The strands caught Connors mid-leap, halting him just enough.

"You're asking for death," Hawk's voice turned cold.

BOOM!

A sonic crack split the air. Hawk vanished, reappearing midair before the Lizard. His fist, casual but merciless, drove into the beast's chest.

CRACK!

Connors' ribcage collapsed inward. His mutated heart burst into view, beating frantically as his body was hurled backwards like a ragdoll.

Peter yelped—his webs still clung to the Lizard's back, dragging him along for the ride. With a quick flip, he cut the strands and caught the ceiling just in time.

But the Lizard wasn't so lucky.

BOOM!

BOOM!

BOOM!

The monster crashed through an entire row of shelves before his body slammed against the second-floor wall, the impact cracking it deep. He lay pinned there, chest caved in, barely moving.

Gwen, trembling, turned to Hawk, who stood protectively beside her. "Why… why would Dr. Connors try to kill me?"

Upstairs, Peter landed amidst the wreckage, staring grimly.

The Lizard's green scales were paling, his chest shattered, his grotesque heart struggling to beat.

One punch.

That was all it had taken.

Dr. Connors—the Lizard—was already at death's door.
