Chapter 58 - Chapter 58: The Cheat Born from My Sister’s Death

"My real sister".

We were both found outside St. Paul's Community Church in Queens by the priest. All we had on us was a slip of paper with our birth dates written down.

The names—Hawk and Anya—the priest gave us. Anya loved hers."

Leaning against his sister's gravestone, Hawk never asked Gwen how she'd found him here. He knew better—stupid question.

His voice was low, as if afraid to disturb Anya's rest.

"Anya was happy. Always happy. Even with the heart defect, the surgeries, the hospital visits… she never stopped smiling.

Lucky for us, being orphans meant the state and federal programs covered her medical bills."

He glanced at Gwen sitting beside him, mimicking his posture, leaning against the stone. A faint smile crossed his lips.

"Sometimes I wonder if that's why we were abandoned. Easier to dump us and let the government pick up the bill."

Gwen's mouth twitched, but she shook her head.

"There were no birth records?"

"None. The church checked hospitals across the city—nothing. One doctor said we were probably home births. Not unusual here, especially in devout families. Some would rather risk mother and child dying than set foot in a hospital."

Hawk shrugged.

"But that doesn't matter. They abandoned us. So be it. No need to meet again. At least our citizenship was legitimate."

He continued.

"Some families came to adopt us. But once they learned about Anya's heart, they all backed out.

Father Moses, the priest, didn't want us split up. So we stayed under his care until we were four. He was our guardian."

Hawk's smile faded.

"When he passed, we were sent to the Children's Home. And we grew up there."

Gwen frowned.

"No adoptive family ever?"

"Who would want us? Take Anya out of the system, her medical costs would crush them. I wasn't about to give her up. Foster homes were possible, but… foster families only want the government checks. Kids just have to survive. That's all."

Gwen had heard her father mention foster abuse cases before. She nodded—she believed him.

Her eyes drifted to Anya's gravestone.

1995.5.20 – 2009.9.10

Her chest tightened.

"Most of the graves here… weren't they from the Hulk–Abomination battle?"

A cold flicker passed through Hawk's eyes before he nodded.

"Yeah. Anya didn't die from her illness. She died that night. In the aftermath of their fight."

Gwen's heart sank.

"So all your effort, all your training, it's for…"

"Revenge."

Hawk turned to her, his voice grinding like teeth:

"I repay kindness. I avenge hatred. Always."

In his past life he was an orphan. In this one, too—but at least he had Anya. Her presence made this world bearable, even without a "system."

He'd never dreamed of ruling the world. He just wanted peace, a decent life. He studied hard, kept his grades sharp, earned a scholarship to Midtown High. His dream was simple: get a good job, earn money, heal his sister's heart.

That September, 2009—their first weekend after he started at Midtown—he took Anya to Times Square. They snapped a photo. To him, it was supposed to mark the turning point of their lives.

And it was.

Just not how he imagined.

That night, Abomination appeared. Then the Hulk.

Two monsters, tearing the city apart.

On TV, the battle looked exciting. Up close, it was hell—screams, blood, bodies. Civilians had no chance.

Hawk dragged Anya through the crowd, desperate to escape. Then it happened.

Hulk slammed Abomination into a building. The structure collapsed. Debris rained down.

When the dust cleared… his sister was gone.

That night Hawk lost everything.

And that night… his cheat finally awakened.

Envy him?

Don't.

It was bought with his sister's life.

The hatred of a sister's death is irreconcilable.

This hatred—

Hawk will repay in blood.
