Chapter 167 - Chapter 167: After Tonight, Wakanda Will Be No More

Pff!

One second Sharon clinked coffee cups with Hawk. The next—he vanished into thin air.

Sharon spat her coffee all over the table.

She bolted upright, coughing as she rushed out of the café, phone already in hand.

"S.H.I.E.L.D. New York, this is Agent 13—Phoenix, trace now!"

Sliding into her car, Sharon barked into the receiver, demanding Hawk's location.

She didn't know what had happened.

But one thing was certain.

Trouble.

The killing intent Hawk gave off in that instant before disappearing—she'd felt it like a blade against her throat.

Question was: who the hell had the guts to provoke Hawk?

This was the man who leveled Quantico.

Who slaughtered the Hulk at Culver Lake.

Who cut down elves at Stonehenge.

Who sparred with Thor once a week on Mars for fun.

And someone had the idiocy to cross him?

The voice on the other end came quick:

"Target located."

"Where?!"

"Empire University."

Sharon froze. A chill raced down her spine.

Oh no.

It wasn't Hawk they were after.

It was Gwen.

Idiots.

Didn't they know? The last people who tried that… their entire families ended up buried.

Everyone in Washington knew—even the fat cats behind the curtain. Hawk's fiancée was off-limits. Try her, and you didn't just die. You vanished.

Because when a demon king voluntarily puts chains on himself, the one thing you don't do is break those chains.

And someone had just tried.

"Gwen, run!"

"You go!"

Inside Empire University's gym, Flash Thompson shouted, stepping in front of Gwen and Mary Jane. Three bald, dark-skinned women advanced on them, weapons gleaming.

Flash Thompson might have been a schoolyard bully, but his code was simple: I can pick on classmates. Outsiders can't.

So when danger struck, he charged.

He didn't last a second.

WHAM!

The lead warrior's golden staff smashed him across the chest, sending him skidding across the polished floor into the wall. He slumped, groaning.

The three women didn't even look back. They kept coming—eyes locked on Gwen.

Their mission: capture Gwen Stacy. Use her to force Hawk to his death.

They were Dora Milaje.

The king's elite guard.

Warriors deadlier than any army.

And this was the new king's command.

They'd been in New York for a month, waiting for their chance. Hawk was untouchable. Gwen wasn't.

Today, Hawk had left campus without her.

Today was their chance.

Mary and Gwen sprinted for the emergency exit.

Behind them, the lead Dora's staff shifted—vibranium extending into a spear.

She hurled it.

BOOM!

The steel door warped, impaled to the ground, sealed shut.

Mary gasped. She grabbed Gwen, shoving her behind. "Don't be afraid. I'll protect you."

"Thanks," a calm male voice answered.

Not Gwen's.

Hawk's.

Rippling into existence before them, Hawk appeared between Gwen and the Dora Milaje. He glanced at Mary.

"My woman is protected—by me."

Mary's eyes went wide. Relief flooded her.

The Dora Milaje froze mid-charge.

They turned to flee.

Too late.

Hawk's lips curled in a cold sneer. His eyes flicked toward them—

And they stopped dead.

Still running, frozen like mannequins, every muscle locked.

Hawk didn't even bother lifting a hand.

Telekinesis pinned them where they stood.

Only then did he turn to Gwen, smiling faintly. "See? In Africa, I showed them mercy. And this is how they repay me."

Gwen met his gaze evenly. "I told you to show mercy because I don't want you to lose yourself. But mercy is precious. It's not infinite."

Hawk's smile hardened.

"So they're no longer worthy of it."

"I asked you to be kind," Gwen said softly, "not a fool without limits. And don't forget—my grandfather was a Georgia farmer, Hawk."

Her smile was serene.

Hawk laughed.

With a thought, the three women bled from every orifice, collapsing in heaps. Dead.

He hadn't looked at them once.

He didn't need to.

The conclusion was already written.

Wakanda had to burn.

Sharon arrived a minute later. Her eyes widened at the corpses.

Dora Milaje.

From Wakanda.

But how? With borders sealed and S.H.I.E.L.D. watching every channel, how had they slipped out? How had they reached New York?

Sharon looked at Hawk, questions on her lips.

He cut her off.

"Call Maria Hill. Tell her—evacuate whoever needs evacuating. Before I arrive."

Sharon sucked in a breath. Her pulse spiked.

"You mean—"

Hawk's eyes blazed.

"After tonight, Wakanda will exist no more."

He lifted his head.

BOOM!

With a thunderous crack, he blasted through the gym roof, soaring into the sky. Sonic booms split the air as his body became a streak of light—

headed straight for Wakanda.
