Chapter 146 - Chapter 146: Until the End of a Long Life

Chapter 146: Until the End of a Long Life

"By the way, I noticed something?" Serie spoke to Kurtz.

Kurtz looked at her. "Hmm?"

"You look the same as you did before. Why is that?"

During their journey, Serie finally noticed that Kurtz was not quite right.

More than ten years had passed since they reunited. For humans, this period of time was enough to bring about some changes in appearance; at least, signs of growth should have been visible.

But this guy in front of her seemed as young as he was at first, so Serie asked her question with growing curiosity.

"Perhaps it's because this body is special. After all, it contains the power of a god, so my appearance won't change."

When the Life Goddess created the Skywing Clan with her authority in the past, she added a spell that prevented their appearance from changing with time.

Now that he had inherited this authority, he naturally learned this spell as well.

"Hmm, so it's like some kind of eternal youth magic?" Serie asked, a bit uncertainly.

For Elves, this kind of magic was quite useless. Because, setting aside external factors, the Elves' appearance was tough to change. Or rather, once Elves grew to a particular stage, their bodies would essentially freeze at that stage and not age further.

It was like having an inherent, eternal youth magic effect.

"Strictly speaking, not really." Kurtz shook his head. "After all, this thing cannot be used on others, but I can research it later. I should be able to create magic with similar effects."

Serie didn't respond; after all, she wasn't interested in this kind of magic.

Now that her wish to slay a god had been fulfilled, she no longer pursued powerful magic, but instead turned to studying various magic she had never seen before.

Moreover, Kurtz's explanation sounded very reasonable.

Eternal youth caused by the power of a god, although Serie had never heard of anything similar, it still felt somewhat incredible to her now that it was happening to Kurtz.

She stopped pressing the issue, merely turning her gaze back to the distant undulations, her thoughts quietly drifting further along the previous topic.

This silence lasted for a long time, broken only by the sound of their footsteps on the path ahead.

But the next second, Serie's footsteps suddenly stopped, and a thought unexpectedly entered her mind, one that made her chest tighten with sudden realization.

She turned her head, her gaze refocusing on Kurtz's face, which seemed to have been forgotten by time: "Since your appearance won't change with time, what about your lifespan? Has it also been altered because of this?"

She asked very directly, essentially asking Kurtz if he had also gained a lifespan-extending magic, similar to eternal youth.

Had the power of a god fixed his appearance, and in doing so, also frozen that fragile hourglass called human lifespan?

Did he… also possess nearly eternal time?

Upon hearing this, Kurtz also slowed his steps.

He met Serie's seemingly calm gaze, and a slow smile spread across his lips.

"Oh?" He drew out his tone, leaned slightly forward, and moved closer to Serie, deliberately lowering his voice with a hint of playfulness.

"Serie, why are you so asking about my lifespan? Could it be that you're worried I'll die too soon and won't be able to accompany you through this long journey?"

"Or…," he deliberately paused, enjoying watching Serie's calm eyes gradually turn flustered, "are you actually very reluctant for me to die?"

"Nonsense!"

Serie bristled like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, instantly whipping her head away, leaving only a golden curtain of hair for Kurtz to see.

Her voice suddenly rose, carrying a forceful tone: "Who would be reluctant for a reckless fellow like you!!!"

Her tone was somewhat urgent, yet it carried a hint of trying to cover something up, as if this would suppress the panic in her heart.

She couldn't imagine what a long future without this audacious human would be like. Those thirty years of searching… had already been long and lonely enough.

Kurtz looked at Serie's profile, feigning composure, and chuckled softly: "Is that so? Then if I really die one day…" He deliberately paused, watching Serie's shoulders unconsciously tense.

"You won't have to foolishly and aimlessly spend thirty years searching for me like before, because I'll just be lying there. Serie's precious life should be spent pursuing more interesting magic."

"I wasn't aimless back then!" Serie immediately retorted, her voice sharp. "If you really died, I would just…"

She took a deep breath, trying to make her voice sound more nonchalant. "Just occasionally, very occasionally, pass by your grave and take a look, that's all."

After she finished speaking, as if afraid Kurtz would say something else that would make her embarrassed, she quickened her steps and walked ahead, leaving only her rigid back to Kurtz.

Kurtz looked at her retreating figure, shaking his head with helpless fondness, with smile on his lips.

Serie couldn't lie; she was still so stubborn and soft-hearted.

He knew her too well.

Her so-called "passing by to take a look" probably meant she would "pass by" every day.

When she said "occasionally," it probably meant "constantly."

She was afraid of him dying, afraid of him disappearing, just as…

He was equally afraid of not being able to walk with her.

However, what Serie didn't know was that the moment he inherited the Life Goddess's remaining authority, he had already touched upon the possibility of reincarnation magic.

The power of a god was not merely the fixing of appearance, but a kind of reshaping of the essence of life.

In a sense, he had already touched the threshold of immortality, or rather, possessed a long lifespan comparable to that of an Elf.

But looking at the stubborn Serie ahead, who bristled at a bit of teasing, Kurtz, with a mischievous glint in his eye, did not tell her the truth.

Tell her now?

If he told her now, she would definitely be furious with embarrassment.

And, watching her clumsy, stubborn self like this, didn't it seem quite amusing?

Let her worry for a while longer.

One day, when they had walked through enough long years, long enough for her to start wondering why this annoying human still wasn't aging, it wouldn't be too late to give her a surprise.

'Hi-Hi-Hi'

A mischievous, triumphant smile appeared on Kurtz's face. He quickened his steps to catch up with Serie.

"Hey, Serie, why are you walking so fast? Wait for me!"

"Shut up! Get away from me!"

Serie didn't look back, and her steps quickened further.

But no one saw that she bit her lip tightly, having already secretly made up her mind.

If that day truly came, she would definitely not just "occasionally pass by."

She would go every day, bringing a bouquet of flowers he might like, or bringing some newly researched magic for him to "see."

Then she would sit in front of his grave, just like before, even if he was no longer noisy and annoying, and could only quietly listen to her speak.

And then, until the end of her long life.
