Chapter 11 - CHAPTER TWELVE: TRUTH FROM A FRIEND

The rain fell in heavy sheets over Ravencrest, turning the streets into rivers of silver light under the glow of streetlamps. Aria pulled her hoodie tighter, the chill seeping through her clothes. The city felt smaller tonight, almost fragile, as if it were holding its breath.

Lila met her at the corner, hair damp and tangled, eyes wide with urgency. "Aria, you have to come with me. I... I have something to tell you. Something you need to know."

Aria frowned, confusion prickling at her senses. "What is it? You're acting like it's… serious."

"It is," Lila said, gripping Aria's arm with a strength that made her stumble. "And you can't ignore it anymore. Not after tonight."

They hurried through the rain, slipping past empty streets until they reached Lila's small apartment. The place smelled of herbs and old books, a sanctuary from the storm outside. Lila closed the door behind them, leaning against it as she drew a deep, shaky breath.

"Okay," Aria said cautiously. "What's going on? Talk to me."

Lila's eyes darted toward the window, then back to her friend. "It's about… the wolves."

Aria froze, a chill running down her spine despite the warmth of the apartment. "The… wolves?" she echoed. Her heart pounded in her chest. Memories of her dreams, the golden eyes, Damien's warning, and the pull of the forest surged together, a wave of panic and anticipation.

"Yes," Lila said, voice low. "Not just any wolves. I mean… the ones that have been lurking near the forest for as long as I can remember. And… you, Aria. You're connected to them in ways I don't think you understand."

Aria's mind raced. "Connected? How? I don't… I don't understand."

Lila stepped closer, urgency in her movements. "It's your family, Aria. Your mother… she was part of this. She had a bond with them with the pack. And I think that's why… why all this is happening to you now."

Aria staggered back, her mind struggling to process the revelation. "My mother? She… she never told me anything about… wolves. Or packs. Or anything."

Lila shook her head. "She couldn't. Not fully. There are rules, traditions. Secrets meant to protect, meant to keep people like you safe. But the pack… they've been waiting. Watching. And now… you're old enough. The bond is calling you."

The words settled over Aria like a stormcloud. The dreams, the golden eyes, Damien, the pull of the forest it all made sense now, yet nothing made sense. Her life, as she had known it, felt like a fragile illusion, a veneer peeling away to reveal something primal, something dangerous.

"I don't know if I can do this," Aria admitted, voice trembling. "I barely understand myself, let alone this… this world I never knew existed. I'm just a student. A normal girl. How am I supposed to be… part of a pack?"

"You're not just part of it," Lila said firmly, her grip tightening on Aria's arm. "You're marked by it. You've always been marked. That's why Damien… why he's here. He's been watching, guiding, protecting. Because you're special, Aria. Because your mother… she left something in you. Something powerful."

Aria's chest tightened. Power. Responsibility. Fear. It all collided in a storm inside her. "I don't even know him," she said, voice wavering. "Damien… I don't know what he wants, or why he's here. And now you're telling me… I'm supposed to belong to a pack I've never even met?"

Lila's eyes softened, a mixture of empathy and determination in her gaze. "I know it's overwhelming. And I know it's terrifying. But hiding, pretending you're normal… it won't keep you safe. It won't stop what's coming. You have to face it. You have to understand it. Or someone else will decide for you."

Aria sank onto the couch, hands gripping her knees. The world she had known classes, friends, her apartment, ordinary life had slipped through her fingers. Every heartbeat, every sense, every instinct screamed at her: she was changing, she was marked, and she could no longer hide.

"Why didn't my mother tell me?" Aria whispered. "Why me?"

Lila sat beside her, pulling her into a careful embrace. "Because she wanted to protect you. She wanted you to grow up safe, to live a life without this… burden. But she also knew that someday, you'd have to face it. You'd have to step into what you were born to be. And that day is now."

Aria buried her face in Lila's shoulder, feeling tears sting her eyes. The weight of the truth pressed down on her, heavy and unrelenting. But beneath the fear, beneath the uncertainty, there was a spark a spark of recognition, of understanding. Something deep inside her stirred, as if waking from a long, forgotten slumber.

"You're not alone," Lila whispered. "You have me. And… Damien. He'll guide you, protect you, even if you don't trust him yet. You have people who care, who will stand with you. But you have to accept it. You have to face it."

Aria nodded slowly, pulling back to look at her friend. "I… I want to. I think I do. But it's all so much. I don't even know where to start."

"You start by learning the truth," Lila said. "By understanding what your mother left behind. By embracing who you are. The rest will come."

The rain outside slowed to a drizzle, the storm easing, but the tension inside Aria did not. She felt a mixture of fear and exhilaration, uncertainty and clarity, all swirling together in a way she had never experienced before.

"I have to see him," Aria said suddenly, words sharp with determination. "I have to see Damien. I need to understand… everything."

Lila nodded, a small, approving smile on her face. "Then go. But be careful. He is powerful, and the bond between you… it's not simple. It will test you in ways you can't imagine. Are you ready for that?"

Aria hesitated, chest tight, then squared her shoulders. "I have to be. I don't have a choice anymore."

Lila reached out, touching her arm gently. "Then go. And remember you're not alone. Not ever."

"Have you always known about this?" Aira asked her before she left.

Lila nodded and looked away "you don't know how long I have been dying to tell you but I couldn't, not until you were ready."

"I understand " Aira said before leaving.

---------------------------------

The forest waited for her like an old friend. The trees whispered in the wind, the earth hummed beneath her feet, and the scent of pine and damp moss filled her senses. Damien was already there, tall and silent, the golden glow of his eyes cutting through the shadows.

"You're here," he said simply. His voice carried both warmth and warning.

Aria approached cautiously. "Lila… she told me everything," she admitted. "About the pack. About my mother. About me."

Damien's expression remained unreadable, though a faint tension eased from his shoulders. "Good," he said quietly. "Truth is the first step. The rest… is learning control, understanding, and choosing your path. That is far more difficult than any battle you may face."

Aria swallowed, feeling the weight of his words settle in her chest. She could feel the power within her, raw and insistent, responding to the pull of the forest. The bond with Damien, tenuous yet undeniable, pulsed beneath the surface. She was marked, she was changing, and she could no longer deny it.

"Where do we start?" she asked, voice barely above a whisper.

Damien stepped closer, placing a hand on her shoulder, grounding her. "Where it always begins. With trust. With understanding. With facing who you are, and who you are meant to become."

Aria nodded, determination flickering in her golden eyes. The storm inside her had not ended, but for the first time, she felt the stirrings of purpose. She was no longer just Aria, the student, the girl with ordinary dreams. She was something more. Something powerful. Something marked.

And she would not run from it.

The forest around them seemed to hold its breath, the shadows stretching and curling like living things. Somewhere in the distance, a low, guttural growl echoed a reminder that the world she was stepping into was dangerous, untamed, and alive.

But Aria's resolve held firm. She had the truth now. She had a guide, a friend, and the strength within her waiting to be awakened.

And the world would soon know her name.
