Chapter 456: Shisui's Jonin Reward
[System: Disciple Shisui diligently cultivated and achieved outstanding results in the Jonin assessment, promoting to Jonin. Reward: Chakra +2400, Ninja Tool Extraction Scroll, Unknown Pokemon Egg (Only Shisui can hatch).]
The moment Shisui passed the Jonin assessment and earned his promotion, Mugetsu's panel distributed the rewards without delay.
Mugetsu skipped over the fixed chakra and the Pokemon Egg, focusing instead on the Ninja Tool Extraction Scroll, a reward he had never received before.
Judging by the name, it should only draw ninja tools. The only question was scope. Was it limited to tools from the shinobi world, or did it include items from beyond it?
As usual, Mugetsu washed his hands first, then tapped the scroll to extract.
[System: Ninja Tool Extraction Scroll consumed. Obtained ninja tool: Bent Spoon.]
Mugetsu's expression turned strange.
A Bent Spoon was certainly something.
If he remembered correctly, it was an item from the Pokemon games. In those games, it boosted the power of Psychic type moves by twenty percent for the Pokemon holding it.
He looked down at the description that appeared.
[System: Bent Spoon: By infusing chakra, it enhances the wielder's Yin Release techniques.]
After reading it, Mugetsu realized that even though the tool looked absurdly ordinary, its localized effect was far from weak.
A direct enhancement to all techniques of a specific transformation meant that if the amplification was decent, it was essentially comparable to possessing a high proficiency Yin Release breathing method.
After leaving the camp, Mugetsu pulled the Bent Spoon from his system inventory. An ordinary looking, slightly twisted iron spoon appeared in his right hand.
He condensed chakra in his left palm, performed Yin Release nature transformation, then reinforced his left hand with Armament Haki.
Pitch black Armament Haki wrapped around his palm. He clenched his fist and drove it into the ground.
The earth cracked under the blow, dirt and rocks spraying outward as a deep pit opened beneath his iron fist.
Mugetsu stepped aside.
This time, he first injected a portion of chakra into the Bent Spoon.
As the chakra flowed in, the spoon emitted a faint blue glow. Mugetsu then gathered Armament Haki again, clenched his fist, and struck the ground once more.
Boom!
A heavy explosion rang out, and a crater even larger than before was carved into the earth.
Mugetsu nodded slightly.
The total amount of chakra he used in both attacks was the same. In the first strike, he poured everything into Armament Haki. In the second, he split off a portion and fed it into the Bent Spoon.
Even with the same total chakra, the Armament Haki boosted through the Bent Spoon was clearly stronger.
Next, Mugetsu tested the upper limit of the Bent Spoon. He fixed the chakra he used for Armament Haki reinforcement, then gradually increased the chakra supplied to the spoon.
Three thousand.
Five thousand.
Ten thousand.
In the final attempt, he injected a full thirty five thousand chakra into it.
In the end, he reached a conclusion. When the chakra used for the reinforced technique remained unchanged, the most efficient amount to inject into the Bent Spoon was below thirty thousand. Above thirty thousand, the effect still increased, but the return dropped sharply. It was better to conserve chakra.
After his chakra fully recovered, Mugetsu ran another test. This time, he increased output to the Bent Spoon while continuously raising the output to Armament Haki as well.
The conclusion was clear.
As the chakra invested into the enhanced technique increased, the Bent Spoon's amplification changed. The more chakra the reinforced technique consumed, the smaller the amplification became. That drop could be offset by increasing the output into the Bent Spoon, but when that happened, the optimal value he had tested earlier would shift upward. It would no longer be thirty thousand, but higher.
Mugetsu also tested the duration of the buff. A single injection maintained the effect for ten minutes. If techniques were used too frequently, the duration shortened.
"As expected," Mugetsu thought, "a Jonin promotion reward should be strongly tied to the disciple."
The Bent Spoon was terrifying in the hands of someone skilled in Yin Release. For an all around fighter like Mugetsu, it was useful, though not something he would rely on constantly.
But if he gave it to Shisui, it would be like putting wings on a tiger. Most of Shisui's strongest abilities were tied to Yin Release now. The Sharingan, genjutsu, and even Armament Haki all stemmed from Yin Release chakra nature transformation.
…
After successfully promoting to Jonin, Shisui returned to the battlefield as quickly as possible.
Compared to Konoha, the East Bank Battlefield held more people he cherished.
"You're back already, Shisui?" Obito could not help asking the moment he saw him. "How did the Jonin assessment go?"
Obito was painfully conflicted. As Shisui's brother in spirit, he wanted him to succeed. As a teammate stuck in the same squad, he wanted Shisui to fail and stay a chunin with him.
"It went alright," Shisui said. "I passed."
He gave Obito the answer Obito least wanted to hear.
Obito, only ten years old, had become the only chunin among Mugetsu's disciples.
"What kind of nightmare is this," Obito thought, dazed. "When did it even start?"
He was the first to learn a breathing technique. The first among Mugetsu's disciples to comprehend a breathing technique chakra mode. He had beaten Guy before, and even Kakashi had lost to him.
How could he be the only chunin?
"Obito, are you okay?" Rin asked, concerned when she saw him suddenly space out, his expression turning pale.
Rin's gentle voice pulled him back.
Obito looked at her worried eyes, at Shisui's calm face, and at Kakashi, who looked like he was silently enjoying something.
He could no longer deny reality. He really had become the lowest ranked shinobi among them.
"I'm fine." Obito shook his head. His face was still pale, but he forced a smile and looked at Shisui. "Congratulations. Passing on your first try is amazing."
How badly he wished he had passed on his first try too.
Then Kakashi would not have the chance to mock his rank. Rin would celebrate his promotion. And he would receive a Jonin gift from Mugetsu, just like the others.
"I was so stupid," Obito thought bitterly. "I should've read more books."
"Keep working hard, Obito," Shisui said, encouraging him. "You'll be promoted soon too."
Shisui was not just being polite. With Guy as an example, Shisui believed Obito could also achieve promotion through merit, not only through the assessment.
After all, Obito was not weak. They were all recognized geniuses on the battlefield.
Obito sighed and nodded. At this point, he could only take it one step at a time.
Before he became a jonin, he would endure. Once he was promoted, he would settle the score.
After that, Shisui went to find Mugetsu to report the results.
Obito and Kakashi followed.
Kakashi wanted to ask about the training of No Thought Strike. Obito wanted to see whether Shisui would receive a Nin Beast Egg.
If Shisui received one, then Obito would believe Mugetsu had prepared eggs for all of them in advance, simply waiting for their promotions.
If Shisui did not, then Obito figured he probably would not receive one either, even after he became a jonin.
"The youngest jonin in Konoha's history, Shisui," Mugetsu praised, smiling with obvious relief. "You make me proud."
Obito could not help sighing again. That title was now forever out of his reach. Even if he were promoted on the spot, he could not surpass Shisui.
"It's all thanks to your teaching, Teacher Mugetsu," Shisui said. In his heart, the main credit belonged to Mugetsu.
"As an eight year old jonin, you can be more confident," Mugetsu said with a smile, shaking his head. "Don't deny your own effort."
He then walked into the tent.
When he came out, a large egg was in his hands.
"This is your jonin gift," Mugetsu said, handing it to Shisui. "Hatch it well. It will become a reliable helper in the future."
Shisui thanked him and accepted it carefully.
To him, this gift was second only to Mugetsu's first birthday present. And since it was a living thing, he would cherish it with absolute care.
[System: You gifted your disciple a Pokemon Egg. Due to the disciple's immense gratitude, a huge critical reward was triggered. Obtained reward: Earth Release Chakra Nature Transformation (Mastery Level).]
Mugetsu glanced at the reward and nodded inwardly.
In terms of rarity, a mastery level nature transformation far surpassed mastery level ninjutsu or taijutsu.
Many shinobi could master multiple techniques. Very few mastered multiple nature transformations, and if you added the condition of high proficiency, it became rarer still.
So even a repeated mastery level nature transformation reward was better than a new mastery level technique, because repeated acquisition increased proficiency.
Mugetsu's Earth Release nature transformation had already reached mastery through special training and grinding courses, so the reward converted into three thousand proficiency points. The instant the conversion completed, a flood of Earth Release training experience poured into Mugetsu's mind.
Obito's hanging heart dropped by more than half.
It really looked like everyone had a share.
"Hehe, Teacher Mugetsu," Obito joked, "can you give me my jonin gift early, so it can hatch sooner?"
"There aren't any Nin Beast eggs right now," Mugetsu thought for a moment, then answered. "Even if you want one, I can't give it to you."
He was not lying. He could only obtain a Pokemon Egg once Obito was promoted to jonin.
Obito's smile froze.
Mugetsu did not sound like he was joking.
"How… how could that be?" Obito stammered, agitation slipping into his voice.
If there were no eggs available, would that not put him at a massive disadvantage in his future internal war?
Guy, Kakashi, and Shisui all had eggs now.
"I'll keep looking," Mugetsu said with a gentle smile. "Maybe there will be one after you become a jonin."
Obito was deeply moved. In that moment, he felt Teacher Mugetsu truly loved him the most.
Even if he did not receive an egg immediately upon promotion, he would not blame Mugetsu at all. If Teacher Mugetsu had one, he would definitely give it.
Just as Obito was about to say something, the egg Kakashi had been holding suddenly erupted with a fierce white light.
