Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Siren’s Debt

Chapter 14: The Siren's Debt

The Nevermore courtyard was a quiet haven, its air cool and heavy with jasmine, the moon casting long shadows across cobblestones worn smooth by centuries. Oliver stood, the psychic crystal cold in his hand, its faint glow pulsing like a heartbeat, tying to the mirror room's violet light and the Rave'N's parchment.

Wednesday flanked him, her black dress a stark silhouette, eyes sharp as she watched Bianca Barclay approach, her red dress shimmering like liquid fire, silver hair catching the moonlight like a blade.

"I know what you're hiding," Oliver said, voice low and steady, fingers brushing his tie for grounding.

"The witch coven. Time to play my hand."

Bianca's face twisted with fury, green eyes blazing, her voice a venomous hiss. "How? What have you been digging into, Smoak? This is my business."

"She's cornered. The siren's got nowhere to hide."

The prompt was a spark, his pulse quickening, sarcasm sharpening like a knife. He held up the crystal, its glow casting eerie patterns on the cobblestones, its hum syncing with the compass in his pocket.

"This isn't just a crystal," he said, voice steady despite the tremor in his hands. "It's a fragment of Eldric's mind. It shows his network, his goals… and his accomplices. The serpent symbol. Your secret. Your deal with the devil."

Bianca's silence was a storm, her fingers clenching, a flicker of fear in her eyes.

"She's calculating. Weighing her options. She's desperate."

After a tense pause, she nodded, voice clipped and bitter. "I'll help, but you owe me. Big time. This isn't for you, magician. It's for my family."

She stepped closer, her red dress swaying, voice dropping, raw with pain. "The covens are using Eldric as a pawn. They'll discard him when they're done. My mother fought them for years, bled for it. They want power, not freedom, and they'll drag my family back if I don't stop them."

"She's in, but it's a deal with claws. A fragile alliance built on debt."

The jasmine scent grew cloying, the courtyard's shadows deepening, Oliver feeling the weight of their pact, the metallic tang lingering, tying to the gem, the crystal, and the Serpent's mystery.

Enid appeared, her pastel sweater a burst of color in the gloom, lavender perfume cutting through the jasmine, her blue eyes narrowing as she saw the trio's hushed conversation. "Everything okay?" she asked, voice soft but strained, fingers twisting her scrunchie, mirroring Oliver's nervous tic. "You guys look like you're plotting a heist."

Oliver's chest tightened, her jealousy a sharp pang, her lavender scent grounding him. "Just… planning," he said, forcing a smile, the lie bitter. "Group project stuff. You'd find it dull, Enid. Trust me."

"She doesn't deserve lies. But I can't drag her into this—not the System, not Eldric."

Her gaze lingered, lips parting as if to argue, then she turned away, steps heavy, her lavender scent fading into the night. The courtyard's air grew heavier, his guilt surging like a tide, the compass humming softly, urging him forward.

Bianca produced a carved stone, its surface etched with a map of a cave system near Jericho, its lines glowing faintly, syncing with the crystal's hum. "The final artifact's there," she said, voice low, eyes meeting Oliver's with reluctant trust. "The covens use it as a ritual site. It's the nexus of Eldric's power. His endgame."

[SYSTEM: Destination Confirmed: Jericho Caves. Prepare for Hostile Environment.]

The message was stark, Oliver's heart racing, the alliance a high-stakes gamble. Wednesday's gaze was unreadable, fingers twitching, ready for the next move.

The courtyard's shadows pressed in, the jasmine scent fading, the narrative bridge clear: the caves held Eldric's final artifact, but the path was a gauntlet, and their fragile alliance would be tested, tying to the mirrors, the crystal, and the Serpent's mystery.

"Bianca's with us, but it's a deal with strings. The covens are bigger than Eldric, and she's our key. Enid's hurt, and I hate lying to her—she deserves better. I'm back in the boys' dorm tonight, keeping this from her. The System's my secret, and it's staying that way. The caves are next, and I'm not failing."
