Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: The Jaw Titan That Cannot Be Killed

"Another one!"

"Another Titan!"

"It looks like… a female?"

The survivors of Shiganshina gaped in terror as the Female Titan appeared. To see not one, but *two* unusual Titans at once was shocking enough—but truthfully, even the mindless Titans were new horrors to them.

To the refugees, this felt like divine punishment. Why else would the Wall that had held for a hundred years suddenly fall?

Though the Jaw Titan had thinned their numbers, Pure Titans still roamed unchecked, devouring humans. The Survey Corps was too few, the Garrison too weak.

And with the Jaw Titan abandoning his task, the breach again funneled in more Titans.

Some lumbered toward the battle between the Jaw, the Armored, and the Female. Others hunted survivors.

Those that drew too close to the intelligent Titans didn't last. Against them, killing Pure Titans was as easy as chopping vegetables.

Annie, as the Female Titan, wasted no words. She wanted this done quickly.

Their disguises were gone. Anyone sharp enough would see the hostility between them. The infiltration had failed.

If Roger survived, he could ally with the humans. That would doom Marley. Millions could be lost.

So there was no retreat.

They had only one choice—kill Roger.

The Female Titan raised her fists, stance coiled. Her eyes locked on the Jaw Titan.

The Jaw Titan crouched low, claws sinking into the dirt, staring back.

Beside them, the Armored Titan raised his one good arm, the other still regenerating.

Roger had fought a Female Titan before—Poi of the last generation. He knew her kind of speed, her counters. Annie would be just as dangerous.

So he kept his distance, leaping from roof to roof. The tight houses suited the small, nimble Jaw Titan perfectly.

Annie knew it, but could do nothing. She could only watch as he bounded, searching for an opening.

Her guard was flawless. Roger couldn't find a way in. One mistake, and her speed would kill him in an instant.

So he waited. Moved carefully. Shifted, closer, closer—until near the Armored Titan.

Then he struck.

The Jaw Titan lunged—not at Annie, but at Reiner.

"ROAR!!"

Fangs bared, he pounced.

The Armored Titan threw up his right arm. Roger's jaws snapped through the plating, shattering it, tearing the limb away.

Both arms gone, Reiner drove his Titan's skull forward. The two smashed head to head—fangs against armor. And it was the Armored Titan whose plating shattered.

"Damn it—"

Reiner reeled.

Roger scrambled for his nape, claws digging.

Then—Annie's leg lashed out.

CRACK!!

Her whip-kick tore through the Jaw Titan's skull. Both her shin and his head exploded in steam.

The Jaw Titan was hurled away, collapsed, unmoving.

"So fast…" Reiner thought, stunned. Annie's high kick, her signature strike, had obliterated Roger's head in one blow.

"Finish it—eat him!"

The Female Titan spoke. Annie never used words in combat. It risked exposure. But now it no longer mattered. If Roger lived, their mission was lost forever.

Reiner jolted back to his senses.

"Yes. I must devour him!"

The Armored Titan charged. *Eat the Jaw, and go home. The mission's already failed,* he thought grimly.

Annie's leg was still healing. She couldn't move.

Reiner loomed over the fallen Jaw Titan. Its head was gone, its body still steaming. He knelt, jaws opening, ready to dig into the nape and swallow Roger whole.

"This is the price of betrayal, Roger," Reiner thought. "Blinded by hate, you chose the wrong path. I'll remember you, Roger Eikam."

The Armored Titan bent low, mouth opening over the Jaw Titan's nape.

On the Wall, the Garrison stared wide-eyed. From afar, Erwin watched. Among the refugees, Pieck and Bertholdt froze.

Then—

The Jaw Titan moved.

Though headless, flames erupted across its body.

And a sound—terrible, chilling—rose with the fire.

"Hahahahahaha—"

Everyone recoiled.

Reiner realized—the laughter came from the headless Jaw Titan.

"You're not dead yet?! Damn you, Roger!!"

Driven mad by the mocking laughter, he stomped down, again and again, on the nape—where Roger's body lay.

BOOM!

BOOM!!

BOOM!!!

The flesh burst into gore, blood spraying.

But the flames did not die. They only burned higher, divine and relentless.
