Chapter 8 - The Misfortune Called a Roommate

"Where's my katana! I'll punish the one who dared violate me!"Tohime frantically searched the room, clearly looking for her sword. I was certain the Academy had confiscated it. Weapons could only be used during exams or official duels.

"Hey, calm down first. Look at this key, it was given to me by the Academy staff. I came to this room only because this was the key they assigned to me. Second, I didn't even know I'd be sharing a room with someone of the opposite gender, so clearly, there's been a system error here."

I tried to sound as reasonable as possible. Thankfully, Tohime seemed to calm down slightly.

"But that doesn't change the fact that you saw me…" she said, pulling a small dagger from beneath her clothes.

So she had a backup weapon. Great.

I immediately called for the Academy attendants. They arrived quickly and managed to restrain her temper. She was... definitely the stubborn type.

According to the staff, there really had been a system error. I was supposed to be assigned a private room. But because of the mix-up, Tohime ended up without a roommate since all the other dorms were already full.

"Hmph. I'd rather live alone than with a pervert like him," she huffed.

I wanted to smack my forehead. Seriously? Couldn't she see the bump on my head?

Thankfully, thanks to Umbros's power, my injuries healed fast.

Soon, all my belongings were moved into a private room. It seemed the Moriet family really didn't want me interacting with anyone. They must've paid the Academy extra to ensure I lived alone.

"Umbros," I called.

From my shadow, a small owl emerged, its form rippling with dark mist.

"This room feels a bit too cramped for one person," Umbros commented, fluttering onto my shoulder.

"Of course it is. The Moriet family doesn't want me growing beyond their control. Keeping me isolated makes it easier to watch me. To them, I'm nothing more than a political tool."

"So, what will you do here?" Umbros asked.

Good question.

Umbros's power gave me only a slight edge my reflexes, my focus, my control with small weapons improved a little. But that was it. I wasn't strong enough to wield heavy blades or powerful spells. My best bet was to focus on surviving.

In the game, the prologue might seem ordinary, but this world wasn't. Arthur, the protagonist, would soon face the main enemy of the first arc: Diabolos, the leader of the Rebellion and wielder of Dark Magic.

I lay back on the hard wooden bed, staring at the ceiling. The air smelled faintly of dust and old timber, suffocating in its stillness.

"Ugh… I wonder how Sebastian is doing. Nox won't back out of the deal, right?"
