Chapter 23 - Failure After Failure

[A heavily damaged brain has been detected. Extraction is impossible.]

[A heavily damaged brain has been detected. Extraction is impossible.]

[No brain has been detected. Extraction is impossible.]

[Brain wave is too old. Extraction is impossible.]

"..."

Mo Zhiran realized that he was happy too early. He already unearthed ten corpses out of the ground, but got the same messages continuously.

There wasn't even a small reward as he thought.

'Maybe because these corpses are too old, and they were weak when they were alive?'

That was all he could think of. He had no idea where the stronger, newer corpses were buried, and it seemed bodies had been laid wherever there was empty space.

Moreover, thousands of corpses lay in the graveyard. If he checked them one by one and reburied them like this, he didn't know how long it would take.

'These bastards can't they make a separate section by strength? How dare they disrespect us outer sect disciples?'

Zhiran cursed the gravekeeper in anger and left the corpse with its head sticking out, intending to dig another.

Since the results were abysmal and the graveyard held thousands of corpses, he couldn't be bothered to rebury them.

'Let those bastards rebury them properly. I am only doing this out of respect.'

He thought selfishly and immediately drove the shovel into the muddy ground, taking out only the skull of the corpse below.

After continuous grave digging, he had become proficient at this. Now, he could easily pull the head from the ground and try to extract the brain.

"..."

[A heavily damaged brain has been detected. Extraction is impossible.]

Only the result wasn't so satisfactory.

'Damn it, I don't believe every corpse here is like this. Let me see if my luck is so bad.'

Zhiran cursed in anger, left the corpse, and arrived at another tomb.

"Twang!"

Then, with practiced ease, he swung the shovel down, burying it deep in the ground, and unearthed yet another skull from the soil.

[A heavily damaged brain has been detected. Extraction is impossible.]

"Twang!"

[A heavily damaged brain has been detected. Extraction is impossible.]

"Twang!"

[A heavily damaged brain has been detected. Extraction is impossible.]

The system kept giving negative prompts as Zhiran took one skull after another from the graves.

But the more it was like that, the faster he worked, digging up corpses in rapid succession.

So, a strange scene unfolded in the outer graveyard of the Divine Cauldron Sect.

If anyone had been there, they would have seen a floating figure in a dark robe, swinging a shovel at a rapid pace across the entire graveyard, digging up graves.

But each time he dug, he unearthed only the skull, rubbed it lightly with his hand, cursed in anger, and moved on to the next.

Fortunately for Zhiran, he was alone, and his frantic behavior went unnoticed. Otherwise, anyone who saw it would have been terrified.

[Brain wave is too old. Extraction is impossible.]

By the middle of the night, Mo Zhiran's speed had increased so much that he had already dug up half the corpses in the graveyard; yet not one had yielded anything.

'Worthless… so worthless.'

'No wonder you died young. You had no talent at all. Even burying you here was an insult.'

Seeing so many corpses but not getting anything from a single one, Zhiran was so mad he nearly spat blood from his mouth.

He now realized that the outer sect was too weak and the corpses here weren't fresh. Although his system could definitely extract the brain, it couldn't generate something out of thin air after all.

Unfortunately, he only had access to this graveyard for now, and he was sure that even if he entered the inner sect, he wouldn't be able to do the same there.

Inner sects were an integral part of the Divine Cauldron sect after all. No one would allow anyone to discredit their disciples like this.

'Forget it, let's check the remaining ones and leave. I might be spotted if I spend too much time here.'

Zhiran shook his head, already accepting the blood loss. He would just look outside to see if he could find a fresh and strong corpse. Even if he could touch it, he would make a profit.

"Twang!"

As Zhiran hurriedly swung his shovel, unearthing yet another corpse, he habitually placed his hand on the head.

Judging by the long hair that remained, it appeared to be a female.

[A fresh brain with a damaged level of 52% has been detected.]

[Do you want to perform extraction?]

As usual, Zhiran wasn't expecting anything and was about to leave the body and go dig another, when the sudden prompt surprised him greatly.

'Finally?'

Zhiran couldn't believe it and kept reading the text over and over until he finally accepted what he saw.

'Yes, begin extraction.'

Once he was certain he wasn't hallucinating, Zhiran nodded excitedly and ordered the system to start.

He had been waiting so long for this; of course, he was going to do it.

[Extraction successful!]

[Congratulations! You have gained a deep memory of Mei Yan, Lotus Drift (Skilled)]

"..."

Zhiran waited eagerly for his reward, but when he saw the name of the skill, he was left speechless.

Never in his life did he think he would be traumatized by the same technique twice in a day.

'Lotus Drift? Same…Lotus Drift movement technique I got today from the Martial Pavilion?'

Zhiran couldn't believe the prompt before him.

But when a surge of information suddenly poured into his mind, leaving him slightly dizzy, he realized he had truly obtained the technique.

It was the same technique meant for female cultivators, but now he could use it even better than they could.

'No vision this time. Looks like it doesn't always appear,' Zhiran thought, calming himself.

No matter what, he had gained a free technique that started at Skilled proficiency.

That was still a win, wasn't it?

With that thought, Zhiran turned toward another grave. Now that he'd succeeded once, he was certain there would be more suitable for extraction.

'Twang!'

He just hoped it wouldn't be the "Nutcracker Palm," or he might really freak out.
