Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Scroll's First Strike

The door of the hut shattered into splinters. Five masked figures rushed in, blades gleaming with killing intent. Their footsteps echoed like a drum of death against the wooden floor.

Selena gasped, stumbling backward. Her hands clenched the fabric of her dress, eyes wide with terror. "They found us…" she whispered, her voice trembling.

Adrian stood in the center of the room, calm yet cold, like a storm gathering beneath a silent sky. He had waited for this moment. His body still ached from days of harsh training, but the scroll pulsed at his side, humming as if alive—its strange markings glowing faintly in the dark.

One assassin sneered. "Hand over the scroll, boy, and we may grant you a quick death."

Adrian's lips curved into a sharp smile. "Come and take it."

The first assassin lunged. Steel sliced through the air toward Adrian's neck. For a split second, the world slowed. Adrian's mind sharpened, and suddenly his hand moved as though guided by something beyond him. A radiant blade of energy surged from his palm—formed from the scroll's teachings.

Slash!

The assassin's weapon shattered in two. His body was flung across the room, crashing into the wall with a sickening thud. Blood sprayed the floor.

The others froze. "What… what was that?"

Adrian raised his hand, the glowing aura dancing around his fingers. His chest heaved, not from fear, but exhilaration. For the first time, the scroll's power answered him—not in training, but in real battle.

Another assassin roared and charged, only to meet a sweeping strike that split the air. His scream was cut short as he collapsed. The remaining three exchanged nervous glances; doubt flickered in their eyes.

Selena's heart pounded as she clutched her chest. This power… it's real. He's wielding the scroll!

But Adrian's gaze was already on the others, his voice like ice. "You wanted the scroll? Then taste its wrath."

He moved. Faster than their eyes could follow. Energy surged, blades of light carving through the night. One by one, the assassins fell, their lifeless bodies littering the hut's floor.

Silence followed. Only the sound of Adrian's heavy breathing and the faint crackle of power in the air remained.

Selena stared at him, trembling. He was no longer the broken, banished heir she had first met. In that moment, he looked like something more—something dangerous.

Adrian lowered his hand, the glow fading. Yet his eyes burned with resolve. "If the Rael family thinks they can hunt me… let them send more. I'll cut them down until none remain."

But deep inside, a shadow of doubt lingered. The scroll's power was intoxicating—almost too perfect. And for the first time, Adrian wondered: Did the scroll choose me… or am I merely its pawn?
