Chapter 8 - Barf robes... great for making friends

I walked beside Mrs. Weasley and Ginny, Ginny still holding her mother's hand but looking a little self conscious about it. I kept my gaze looking straight, but I could feel her staring at me more than once.

"So, here we are," Mrs Weasley, said smiling at Ginny then giving a half smile to me. "We're going to be going to the secondhand robe shop... but if you want we can go to Madam Malkin's after. That's where most people go."

She spoke with only a little awkwardness in her tone, but I could tell she was more than a little embarrassed and stressed.

"Well, according to the goblin..." I stopped, the words sounded very strange coming out of my mouth.

I mean I met a goblin...obviously... but I still can't process it well.

"Yeah that sounded strange, because goblins exist now... well I mean they've always existed... wait not always, because nothing's always existed... um..." I concluded lamely, laughing over my awkwardness at not knowing anything about anything anymore. "Now I don't even remember what I was going to say..."

Mrs. Weasley smiled at me, and even Ginny had to cover a laugh behind her hands after those words left my mouth. I laughed with them for a second before remembering what I was going to say.

"Oh yeah!" I said, pointing a finger in the air... then lowering it as I realized how stupid it probably looked.

What am I doing...

"Well the goblin who exchanged my money said it's just enough for everything I'd need, and my parents aren't exactly rich so... I know my dad gave me quite a bit..." I trailed off slightly, wondering if I was oversharing. "Anyways, it's probably best if I get some cheaper things. I mean, I don't know how wizard stuff is priced or anything. And..."

I stopped myself from saying anything else, biting my lip and looking a bit sheepish. "Sorry, sometimes I ramble too much."

Mrs. Weasley laughed softly. "It's all right, dear." she said kindly, then to both Ginny and I, "Let's get some robes!"

We started walking to Second-Hand Robes, Mrs. Weasley leading the way. She held the door open for Ginny and I, and I started to look around.

There were supplies scattered on tables all around. Different objects like wands, scales, cauldrons, and more, all cluttered in different piles that seemed at least a bit organized. The robes that I could see were in the front of the shop, the black colors faded slightly, but looked in decent shape.

Ginny and I raced over to the table and started looking. They were mostly all the same, but varied in sizes. I tried one on and it fit perfectly. It was a little worn along the hem of the sleeves and neck line, but they fit and that's what mattered.

I took them off and put them aside. I looked at Ginny for a second and got an idea. The was awkwardness between us because we didn't really know each other, and I wanted to change that.

I saw a dressy looking robe and quickly put it on. It was vivid orange in color, had chalky lace lining the sleeves, and something that looked strangely fuzzy along the neckline.

"How do these look?" I asked Ginny, opening my arms to finish the look.

She looked up and immediately started laughing. Her hand went to her mouth and she leaned against the table.

"Those are definitely something." she said, the first words she'd ever said to me. "Makes my decision on which to get a lot easier."

Reaching for a robe, she fit her arms through the sleeves and turned to face me, a mischievous smile crossing her face. "What about these?"

A grin spread across my own face and I started laughing as I saw the robes she chose. They were a dulled yellowish green with patchy lace covering the neck line.

"Well... if you barf on it no one will see it..." I shook my head, a smirk crossing my face.

Ginny tilted her head to the side, her face suddenly serious.

"So they don't look good on me?" she asked, her face and tone seemed to tell me she was dead serious but I didn't think so.

I opened my mouth to say something, still debating if she was serious, but then she cracked. She laughed and I joined in.

Well, I'm glad I started this... maybe we're friends now! And I can find out why seeing her made me think strange things...

I turned out my strange thought line and looked back at Ginny who was pulling off the robes, and throwing on a different one instead, this one actually black and without lace.

"Now that one's good." Mrs. Weasley said from behind us.

We both turned to see two trunks, and some other supplies in her arms and a smile plastered on her face.

"Glad to see you both are having fun," she said warmly, "I got some other supplies I know you'll both need. Now let's go pay and meet the others at Flourish and Blotts."

Ginny and I looked at each other before following Mrs. Weasley out of the shop, smiles still lighting our faces.

I just made a friend in the Wizarding World! How cool is that?
