If confidence were electricity, the Galaxy "studio" would still be a brownout.

 

Day One started with me hyping Angel like I was a one-woman marching band.

 

"Breathe in, breathe out. You're a glacier. You're a laser. You're . . . a glamorous laser glacier."

 

Angel blinked. "That's not . . . a thing."

 

"It is now," I declared, shoving the headphones at her. "History will remember it."

 

Mr. Park saluted us from behind the relic they called a mixing console. The console had exactly two moods: "humming prayer" and "dying whale."

 

The lone mic's cable was held together by duct tape and hope. The booth—a dignified cupboard lined with egg cartons—smelled faintly of instant noodles and despair.

 

Angel stepped into position. I gave her the Kai Photo Blessing (hold, inhale, whisper "for him"), and nodded for Mr. Park to roll.
