A shut-in. A chubby, ordinary girl who blended into the background like a shadow. Easy to ignore. Easier to mock.

The world never ran out of ways to remind me I didn’t belong. Cruel jokes in hallways. Laughter that followed me home. Words sharper than blades, carving deeper than bruises ever could.

The chair creaked under me. The rope swayed above. My room was still, suffocating, as if the world didn’t care whether I breathed or not. And maybe it didn’t.

Eric walked out last—tall, composed, quiet—but somehow still stole the entire scene without trying. The wind hit his hair just right, his eyes scanning the crowd, and for a wild second, I wondered if he'd feel me there.


He didn't, of course. Why would he? I was just one face in a screaming crowd, hidden behind a mask, heart doing gymnastics.


Still, I couldn't help whispering, "You're doing great, idiot."


Angel gripped my arm. "He's even more perfect in person!"


"Focus on Kai," I hissed. "That's your man."


The meet-and-greet started soon after. Fans lined up to get autographs, snap photos, and cry in peace. Security was tight, but the air was filled with excitement—pure, contagious, and loud.


Angel was practically vibrating beside me. "Do you think I should tell Kai he inspired me to sing?"


"Yes, and also not to take out a restraining order afterward."
