A shut-in. A chubby, ordinary girl who blended into the background like a shadow. Easy to ignore. Easier to mock.

The world never ran out of ways to remind me I didn’t belong. Cruel jokes in hallways. Laughter that followed me home. Words sharper than blades, carving deeper than bruises ever could. 

Bit by bit, I shrank into myself until there was nothing left but silence and the weight of my own loneliness.

The chair creaked under me. The rope swayed above. My room was still, suffocating, as if the world didn’t care whether I breathed or not. And maybe it didn’t.

It came from the neighbor’s stereo, muffled through the thin walls. A single voice cutting into the darkness.

Eric collapsed on the couch. "I deserve a medal."


"We deserve a nap," Lance groaned. "We're never doing this kind of team building again. Never. Next time, I'll personally fund a luxury resort if money's what you're worried about."


Eric didn't even look up. "Hardship builds character."


Kai ran outside screaming about fresh air.


Ren leaned against the doorframe, watching him.


I stepped outside and I knew that he followed me.


The sky glowed orange. The lake shimmered.


Ren nodded. "Yeah . . . want to swim in the lake tomorrow?"


"That's actually a good idea! Let's all go tomorrow!" Lance said from behind us, clearly energized. Eric appeared right after him, nodding slightly like he'd already approved the plan in his head.


"Why not now?!" Kai protested immediately. "We're already here!"
