Although the space-time alarm device was severely damaged—so much so that it was no better than an ordinary wristwatch in the hands of a normal person—Tony Stark was keenly aware of the value of the small square box.
If he brought it back and studied it carefully, he would certainly discover scientific principles far ahead of the current era.
Xu Fu smiled at Tony's request.
He was eager for Tony Stark to help repair the space-time alarm device.
So he nodded. "No problem. It's yours."
"Thanks. I'll go get my combat suit and then head back to Stark Tower to study this thing."
Tony waved the small box in his hand and turned to leave S.H.I.E.L.D.
At last, Director Fury spoke with a hint of frustration. "Hey, does anyone still remember Loki?" The guy who kidnapped the Cosmic Cube!"
"It's a Cosmic Cube that belongs to Asgard," Thor corrected.
As the original course of events would have gone, Loki was supposed to pretend to be captured. Later, using his scepter, he would disrupt everyone's emotions, sow doubt among them, and eventually make them turn on each other.
However, Xu Fu's appearance made Loki sense a looming crisis.
As a result, Loki abandoned his plan to be captured and instead hurried to open a portal for the Chitauri army to slaughter Earth's super-soldiers.
"Speaking of which…"
Xu Fu suddenly raised his voice, drawing everyone's attention.
"Tony, you just said that the Arc Reactor can provide massive amounts of energy—and Loki just happens to need enough of it…"
"My building…" Tony's expression changed instantly. "Yes. Loki wanted an audience. We saw him in Stuttgart, but that was only a rehearsal. This is the real performance. He wants to be the star of this grand farce. He wants flowers and applause. He wants a towering monument with his name engraved on it…"
Now Tony Stark was certain—Loki would be at the top of Stark Tower, opening the portal.
"Everyone, what are you waiting for?"
Xu Fu stood up, pressed a silver bracelet, and a black combat suit instantly materialized around his body.
Everyone was stunned by the sight. Tony's eyes lit up.
It was as if the question had already formed in his mind: What kind of technology is this?
If he could figure out how it worked, the limitations of the Iron Man suit would be completely solved.
"Nanotechnology," Xu Fu said calmly. "We can talk about it later. Let's deal with Loki first."
He walked out of the conference room.
"Nanotechnology…" Tony whistled softly. "That's insanely cool."
He walked out alongside Thor.
The three of them flew ahead. Captain America and Black Widow turned to Director Fury at the same time.
"You two go on ahead," Fury said. "I'll pilot the aircraft… and, uh, be careful."
"What about me?" Dr. Banner asked. He suddenly felt a strong sense of being left out—something that felt both fortunate and oddly unsettling.
"Come on," Fury replied. "Didn't Thor say Loki has an army? One more person means more strength."
In the end, Director Fury let out a sigh, his gaze falling on the Mind Gem inside the transparent container.
He would have loved to keep it for himself, but…
With Thor of Asgard on one side and a mysterious man from another universe on the other, Fury had no desire to make a claim on the Mind Gem.
This was no longer a simple emergency response team.
It was obvious that several absolute powerhouses had been invited.
Fortunately, there were also Captain America and Black Widow—both disciplined and obedient—otherwise Director Fury might truly have resigned on the spot.
After the group left, Fury called Coulson in.
"Coulson, I'm assigning you a mission."
Hearing this, Coulson's expression stiffened instantly. "What are your orders, sir?"
"With authorization, you are to investigate S.H.I.E.L.D.'s plan to use the Cosmic Cube to develop weapons…"
Before Fury could finish, Coulson looked confused. "To be honest, sir, if Thor hadn't intervened, we still might have had a good chance to recover the Cosmic Cube, but—"
"No, no, no," Fury interrupted. "I want you to destroy those weapons."
He patted Coulson on the shoulder. "It's precisely because we know we can't reclaim the Cube that we need to handle this properly—to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings."
"No problem!"
Coulson let out a long breath of relief. He had thought the director was sending him on a suicide mission.
Destroying half-finished weapons—and not dying—was excellent news.
"Understood, sir. I'll head out immediately."
"Go."
Stark Tower, Manhattan, New York.
Xu Fu and Tony flew to the top of the building and saw a strange device emitting energy. Dr. Erik Selvig was standing beside it, adjusting the controls.
"Shut it down, Dr. Selvig!" Tony raised his hand in warning.
"It's too late to shut it down now," Selvig said excitedly under mind control. "Look closely—the Cube is about to open an entirely new universe that mankind has never seen before!"
Xu Fu's mental perception detected lingering traces of psychic energy on Selvig—remnants that had not disappeared even after Loki's scepter was destroyed.
Standing to the side, Tony fired his energy cannon. "Then I'll force a shutdown!"
Boom! Boom! Boom!
As Iron Man's energy blasts struck the device, a luminous barrier flared up around the energy transmitter, redirecting the attacks in multiple directions.
When the rebounding energy struck Iron Man's armor, Xu Fu stepped forward.
"Tony, fall back. Let me try."
Since Iron Man's firepower couldn't penetrate the barrier, Xu Fu wanted to directly sense the Cosmic Cube's energy. Thunder rose in his palm.
"Alright," Tony said. "I'll leave it to you. I'll go find Loki myself."
As he activated his thrusters and flew toward the next balcony, Jarvis's voice sounded from within the suit.
"Sir, bad news. This suit's weapon system is about to shut down. Its energy reserves are depleted."
"Then it looks like Thor and his brother will have to talk things out themselves," Tony muttered.
Seeing Thor flying toward the tower with his hammer, Tony decided to change into another combat suit and return later.
At this time, Thor could only fly using Mjolnir, making him slower than Xu Fu. He had just landed on the balcony when Iron Man left.
On the rooftop, the thunder in Xu Fu's hand condensed into a spear.
He lunged forward and hurled it at the energy transmitter below.
A blinding flash erupted in the air.
The divine lightning spear crashed down.
It pierced the energy light curtain, instantly crumpling the previously smooth surface and driving three to four centimeters into it.
In the next second, the entire energy field was engulfed in silver lightning.
The Cosmic Cube at the center began to rotate rapidly, releasing a massive surge of energy.
Rumble—rumble—rumble!
A wave of energy rippled outward, followed by a colossal pillar of light that shot straight into the sky.
