Conventional ninjas mainly served their lords by carrying out secret plans, sabotage, assassinations, gathering frontline intelligence, and disrupting enemy supply bases.
Ninjas in the Naruto world were essentially enhanced versions of traditional ninjas. They possessed extraordinary abilities and operated more like mercenaries. Their work covered a broader range—anything from catching cats and babysitting to exterminating bandits or annihilating entire nations.
Assassination, of course, was one of those tasks.
Not to mention the Anbu within the Five Great Ninja Villages—their full name was the Special Assassination and Tactical Squad.
Assassination was practically one of a ninja's signature skills.
With their superhuman powers, assassination techniques were diverse. Among them, Uchiha clan ninjas were the most suitable for assassination missions—their powerful genjutsu made the process as smooth as silk. Even if unexpected complications arose, they could usually resolve them without a sound.
And at this moment…
At the gate of a manor, an eight-man patrol squad passed by. One man in a black suit suddenly stepped out of formation and approached the iron gate.
The manor gate looked no different from those commonly seen in movies: metal bars paired with gaudy decorative patterns. Not much defensive value—but pleasant to look at.
The rest of the patrol ignored the black-suited man and continued walking down the street.
The patrol might ignore him, but the guards at the gate certainly wouldn't.
Ten armed guards in armor stood before the closed gate, spaced two meters apart.
The guard closest to the black-suited man approached immediately to question him; the other guards also shifted their attention toward him.
"Hey! Who are yo—"
He never finished. The guard saw three black tomoe spin within the man's eyes. His expression went blank, his gaze losing all focus.
"Go open the gate."
The guard obeyed and walked to the iron bars, reaching out to push the gate.
Seeing this, the remaining guards hurried toward him, intending to interrogate the black-suited intruder. The attack several hours earlier had left all guards in Mary Geoise extremely tense.
It took only a few seconds for the nine other guards to reach him.
"Hey! Who is that guy?"
The guard holding the bars turned around—and Sharingan swirled in his pupils. A genjutsu erupted instantly.
A second or two later, all ten guards worked together to push open the gate.
The black-suited man walked into the manor.
Half an hour later, he walked out again and disappeared down the street.
...
The next day, three pieces of news spread throughout Mary Geoise.
First: Five Celestial Dragons were found dead in their homes, each with a blade through the heart. Their household servants and guards had already been taken away for interrogation by CP0.
Second: The treasure vaults of all five Celestial Dragons had been emptied—cleanly stripped of everything, not a single item left behind.
Third: An unknown individual had attacked patrol units the previous night; over three hundred patrol officers were killed.
Of the three events, the patrol massacre was discovered first.
Patrol teams were required to contact the command center every fifteen minutes via transponder snail. Staff in the command room kept detailed records of all incoming reports.
Thus, the moment a team failed to report, the staff immediately noticed.
They tried notifying other patrol teams—but it was useless…
More and more patrol squads went silent. No messages returned.
The empty treasure vaults were discovered by CP0 while investigating the manors.
By the time the three incidents spread across Mary Geoise, it was already evening.
In their temporary safe house, Minato and the others stared at each other.
"Who emptied the treasure vaults?" Minato asked Obito and the others.
Obito, who possessed a massive personal storage space, immediately declared his innocence. "Not me. I didn't even know where the vaults were. How would I empty them?"
Shisui and the others shook their heads. "Same reason here."
"So that means someone other than us group members is also inside Mary Geoise," Gojo Satoru analyzed. "Of course, it might not be a group member—just an ordinary thief."
The moment he said that, Minato and the rest turned to stare at him.
"Don't look at me like that. I, Gojo Satoru, would never do something as tasteless as stealing."
Even with his blindfold on, Gojo could still sense their accusatory gazes.
"It's some other group member."
Minato and the others looked away, choosing not to argue with Gojo. Instead, they opened the group chat.
Minato: "If a group member did it, that means the treasure vault contents are valuable. Next time we kill a Celestial Dragon, we should first ask where their vault is. We can check if the valuables actually sell for good money."
Obito: "Alright, sensei. I'll remember that."
Shisui: "We should also ask how the vaults open."
Obito: "No need. It's just a door—it can't stop me."
Itachi: "But it can stop us."
Black Zetsu's competitor is about to come online.
...
Meanwhile…
The Sabaody Archipelago—known by pirates as "The Island of Failure" and "The Island of Restart"—is the final stop before the New World.
Whether someone applies through official channels—like merchants and nobles—or tries to enter illegally—like pirates or fugitives—they all must stop at Sabaody for a period of preparation.
The legal route requires bureaucratic approval; the illegal route requires bubble-coating the ship.
Thus, the island gathers all kinds of people.
Pirates from all four seas and the first half of the Grand Line, merchants, bounty hunters drawn by the pirates, local residents, and stationed Marines.
It's also close to Mary Geoise, making it a prime location for Celestial Dragon slave traders—slave-hunting teams roam the island constantly, searching for valuable targets.
In short: Sabaody is chaotic and dangerous.
But for certain group members, such a dangerous place is paradise.
Pirates who survive the first half of the Grand Line are almost all vicious—without exception. Their "stats" are all negative values.
On the first day of activity, the Legendary Sannin from Konoha arrived at Sabaody. Within just an hour, they had farmed nearly two million points—ranking third, fourth, and fifth on the leaderboard.
Tsunade was furious, scolding her teammates for being useless: How could a measly two million points be enough to rank third?
Are you two playing me?
Looking at the leaderboard filled with numbers in the tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands, Tsunade—infuriated—accidentally smashed two pirate ships, causing her points to spike again.
Tsunade: "…"
"Grass." (A certain plant.)
