Silver barely slept after Eli left.

Morning light spilled through the narrow dorm window, pale and cold against the frost still clinging to the glass. Every time she'd closed her eyes, she saw him standing in the doorway. Snow melting into the floorboards, voice steady even as hers shook.

You don't have to say anything. Not tonight.

She'd said not tonight.

But she hadn't said no.

Now, sitting on the edge of her bed with the blanket pulled around her shoulders, she wondered if he'd known that already. If that was why he'd looked at her the way he did before leaving.

Americus was gone, probably at early practice or dragging Riley to Blue State for coffee. But the quiet didn't feel peaceful. It pressed in, the kind that left you alone with your thoughts too long.

Silver's eyes drifted toward the jacket hanging on the back of her chair. His jacket.

She hadn't returned it.
