The moment Eli disappeared into the tunnel, something in Silver's chest collapsed.
The game continued around her, refs resetting for a faceoff, Yale's bench shuffling lines to cover the gap. But all she could see was the way his arm had hung wrong, the same helpless angle she'd seen in her own reflection two years ago.
"Silver?" Americus's voice came from far away. "You okay?"
She wasn't. Her hands were shaking, breath coming too shallow. The crowd noise felt like static, pressing in from all sides. Someone behind them was explaining to their girlfriend that it looked like a separated shoulder, maybe worse, and Silver wanted to turn around and scream at them to shut up.
"I need to go down there."
"Silver, no. The trainers have him."
