Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 — Festival of Sunlight

Morning broke over Elderleaf with brilliance, unlike any other day. The sun rose in a blaze of gold, and its light spilled over the forest canopy, scattering beams across rooftops woven of wood and leaves. Birds sang with unusual vigor, as if they too sensed the importance of the day. The entire village buzzed with anticipation. From the tallest treetop homes to the smallest moss-covered cottages, bright ribbons of gold and white were tied to beams and branches, fluttering in the soft breeze.

Children chased each other through the square with sun-shaped charms dangling from their necks, wooden trinkets carved lovingly by parents the night before. The smell of roasting venison, dawnfruit glaze, and freshly baked hearthbread wafted through the crisp morning air, mingling with the tang of wildflowers.

Today was the Festival of Sunlight a day unlike any other. A day to honor Alexander, the warrior who sacrificed himself a thousand years ago to bring peace to the fractured world.

For Alex, this was his first time experiencing the festival not as an outsider watching from the background, but as a villager of Elderleaf. As someone who belonged.

"Hold still, Alex!" Lyanna scolded, tugging hard at his sleeve. She wore a little white dress embroidered with golden leaves, her hair braided with tiny wildflowers. A garland of daisies crowned her head. Her small hands fumbled with another garland she tried to fix around his neck. The wreath was uneven, clumsy in its weaving, but brimming with her joy.

Alex laughed, raising his hands in surrender. "All right, all right! Just don't strangle me, okay?"

Kael, standing nearby in a green tunic tied with a golden sash, smirked. "Don't bother, Lyanna. No matter what you put on him, he'll still look like he just crawled out of sparring practice."

Alex rolled his eyes. "Says the one who tried on three different sashes this morning."

Kael's smirk faltered. "I was making sure it matched the occasion."

Their mother stepped in, smiling as she adjusted Alex's garland with gentle fingers. "Enough teasing, both of you. Go now. The festival waits for no one."

The square of Elderleaf was transformed. Where yesterday it was a quiet gathering place beneath the great oak, today it was alive with color and noise. Long wooden tables groaned under the weight of food: steaming platters of roasted dawnfruit glazed in honey, skewers of spiced hare, golden loaves of hearthbread, and bowls of shimmering crystal springwater alongside goblets of elderberry wine.

The System shimmered faintly in Alex's vision.

Alex's mouth watered. His old world never offered this much detail in even the most realistic of games. Here, every flavor mattered, every bite a piece of survival and story.

"Are you drooling?" Kael teased, nudging him with an elbow.

"No!" Alex shot back quickly, wiping his mouth just in case.

The festival began with music. Elven flutes, high and sweet, wove into the deep rhythm of human drums carried from afar. The melodies rose and fell like sunlight through clouds, filling the air with warmth. Children danced in circles, their laughter ringing like windchimes, while older villagers linked hands in slow, graceful motions that told the story of light breaking through shadow.

Kael nudged Alex again. "Don't just stand there. Dance."

"I don't dance," Alex muttered.

But Lyanna was already tugging at his hand. "Come on, Brother! Please?"

Before Alex could protest, she dragged him into the circle. He stumbled at first, nearly tripping over his own feet. The villagers laughed, not in cruelty but in good humor, and the sound only deepened his embarrassment. Yet Lyanna's grin was radiant, her joy infectious. Step by step, Alex found the rhythm, and by the third turn around the circle, his awkwardness melted into laughter of his own.

For once, he didn't mind being clumsy. For once, the laughter surrounding him was warm shared, alive.

By midday, the music faded, and silence settled over the square. The elders stepped forward, their robes lined with golden thread that shimmered in the sun. Elder Thalion raised his staff, topped with a crystal that caught the light and spread it like fire.

"Today," his voice rang, deep and commanding, "we honor the one who gave us light. A thousand years ago, when darkness threatened to consume the world, a warrior stood between despair and hope. His name was Alexander the Sunblade."

The crowd bowed their heads as one. Even the children grew solemn.

Thalion continued, his words carrying the weight of generations. "He was not born of elves alone, nor of humans, but carried both within him. And it was his unity his ability to walk both paths that allowed him to strike against the Shadow King. When the final blow was struck, Alexander's life became the dawn. From his sacrifice, peace was born."

The hush deepened. Even Alex's breath felt loud.

His chest tightened. Alexander… the Sunblade. The name was not just a legend carved in stone. It was his name too. His heart pounded with strange weight, as if destiny itself leaned closer.

The System stirred.

Alex's breath caught. His chest felt heavy, as if invisible chains had been laid across his shoulders. This wasn't a coincidence. The System itself tied him to the legend.

The solemnity gave way to joy again. Music swelled, games began, and contests filled the square. Kael strode into the archery competition, loosing arrow after arrow with calm precision. Each shaft struck true, and the crowd cheered his name. Lyanna ran to the storytelling circle, where she spun a tale so bright and imaginative that even the elders laughed in delight.

Alex drifted toward the sparring ring. Wooden swords clashed as villagers tested their skill in good-natured matches. The crowd cheered, clapped, and jeered in playful banter.

When his turn came, Alex stepped forward, gripping the practice blade. His opponent a tall boy, a year older grinned confidently.

They circled. The boy struck first, fast and strong, but Alex blocked cleanly, Kael's training echoing in every movement. He countered, swift and sharp. Their blades cracked together, and the crowd roared when the boy stumbled back.

[New Skill Unlocked: Quick Step — A short burst of speed when dodging.]

Alex's pulse raced. A new skill, in front of everyone. Proof he was growing. Proof he wasn't the same weak boy from before.

For the first time, he wasn't invisible.

As twilight came, lanterns shaped like tiny suns were lit one by one. Villagers carried them to the river, setting them afloat upon the water. The golden lights drifted away, their glow mirrored by stars now pricking the velvet sky.

Alex stood by the bank with his family. Lyanna slipped her small hand into his. Her eyes shimmered as she whispered, "Do you think Alexander can see them? The real one, from the stories?"

Alex stared at the drifting suns, each carrying a prayer, a memory, a vow. "I think he can," he said softly. "And I think… he's smiling."

But even as the warmth of the moment wrapped around him, a chill slid down his spine.

The System pulsed.

Alex clenched his fists at his side. The festival was beautiful, alive, full of laughter and light. But peace was fragile. The System was already pointing him toward the storm.

As the last lantern disappeared into the horizon, Alex whispered a vow no one else could hear.

"If darkness comes again, I'll be ready."

And for the first time, he wasn't just saying it. He meant it with everything he had.
