Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Awakening of Deliora

What are language and words?

They're the tools intelligent beings use to share information, to define the world around them—the crystallization of their wisdom!

Be it humans, demons, dragons, or Celestial Spirits, every race has its own language and script.

And Word Spirit Magic? It's the magic that harnesses the power of those languages and words!

Magic itself is just a way to manipulate the world's energy, a hallmark of civilization. And nothing screams "civilization" louder than language and words!

Compared to Word Spirit Magic, other forms of magic might as well be cavemen swinging sticks and stones!

Yup, that's right!

"Word Spirit Wizards are the strongest!!"

What the heck is this guy going on about? Why's he suddenly so fired up? Did I say something to set him off?

Ultear, more confused than anyone, stammered, "Ahem… you…"

Her face hurt. That punch was gonna leave a mark.

She couldn't wrap her head around it. Was there something wrong with this guy's brain? Why'd he just attack out of nowhere? Weren't they supposed to exchange a few words, size each other up, show off some magic, then fight?

Kira's tone dripped with disdain. "What's the big deal? Your endgame's controlling Deliora, which puts us on opposite sides."

"Hmph! I let my guard down just now, but let's go again—"

Kira cut her off, brimming with confidence. "Again? You still wouldn't stand a chance!"

This jerk! Can't he let me finish a sentence?

Kira didn't care what Ultear was thinking. Right now, he just wanted to flex.

"Slow!"

"Crush!"

"Weaken!"

"Mana Drain!"

With a wave of his hand, four debuff spells hit Ultear like a truck. She instantly felt an oppressive weight, like facing her guild's vice-master Brunote's gravity magic. It pinned her in place, unable to move.

A crushing sense of weakness flooded her body, like she'd been hit with her own time magic. Every step felt like wading through molasses, her magic reserves drained rapidly, and casting anything became a struggle. Even maintaining her transformation magic was a chore.

"How…?"

The effects lasted nearly a minute before Kira let up. "Looks like your Arc of Time doesn't work on magic cast directly on your body."

"So, giant magic's your kryptonite!"

Giant magic? Like the guild master's?

Ultear, never one to back down, sneered, "Didn't you just say not to reveal your magic too easily? Showing off like that—bold move."

It's called flexing for the crowd!

"This is just one use of Word Spirit Magic," Kira shot back. "You think I'd reveal my full hand that easily? And how do you know I'm not baiting you with a fake spell?"

It was pure bluff, but Ultear bought it. "You're a sneaky one. I almost thought you were from a dark guild!"

Kira shrugged off her jab, unfazed. Honestly, wasn't Fairy Tail basically half a dark guild?

The guild's founders were students of Zeref himself. Hades, the master of Devil's Heart, was Fairy Tail's second guild master. By that logic, they were all one big, messy family.

The guild's three super spells—Fairy Law, Fairy Glitter, and Fairy Sphere—were absolute powerhouses, leaving no enemy standing. Add to that their blatant disregard for the Magic Council and their habit of wrecking public property on missions…

But we're the good guys! "We're Fairy Tail, after all!"

After a brief silence, Kira acted like he hadn't heard her and turned to his teammates, launching into a lecture.

"Every spell has a counter. There's no such thing as an unbreakable magic!"

The trio nodded in agreement.

"The stronger the spell, the higher the cost!"

"Uh-huh… uh-huh…"

Like a stressed-out teacher cramming for an exam, Kira rattled off his battle manual, leaving everyone exchanging awkward glances.

Since they had to wait for the Moon Drip to finish anyway, they figured they might as well humor him. Kana even cracked open a bottle and started drinking.

"…Rule 100, the most important one! A good magic weapon can turn the tide of battle, letting you snatch victory from defeat. And the cost? Just a little cash! So never skimp, and don't let money blind you!"

Kira finished his impromptu "Wizard's Handbook" with a swell of pride.

Look at that—my guide to getting stronger! I don't share this with just anyone! Where're your notebooks?

But when he turned around, he was dumbfounded. "What are you guys doing?"

They didn't look like they were listening at all.

Lyon was leaning against a rock, staring at the sky—specifically at the Moon Drip he was obsessed with. His three lackeys were huddled around him.

But they weren't the issue. The real problem was…

Gray sat on the ground, head down, lost in thought. Kana and Loke were chugging drinks, their faces flushed—clearly halfway to drunk.

And Ultear? Wait, where'd she go?

So I was talking to myself this whole time?

Kana waved her bottle at him. "Yo, Kira! Wanna join us for a drink?"

Are all your cards just booze?

But he was kinda thirsty. Kira grabbed the beer Kana offered, downing it in one go, feeling refreshed.

"The ritual's almost done!" someone shouted.

Everyone looked up.

Kira waved them over. "C'mon, let's go check it out!"

They headed down, no one noticing Kira secretly tampering with the Moon Drip.

What was he doing? Collecting it, of course! A magic that could dissolve any spell was too good to pass up. He had to stock up for later.

Soon, they reached the bottom of the ruins. Purple light poured from the cave's entrance, bathing the ice-sealed Deliora in liquid moonlight.

"ROOOOARRRR!!!"

The demon, frozen for a decade, bared its fangs at last. Its roars echoed through the ruins, and under the Moon Drip's influence, Ur's Absolute Freeze began to melt like ice under a flame.

Even though it wasn't fully thawed, the beast's roars shook the ground, promising to bring the mountain itself to its knees.

Deliora, the mighty demon that once ravaged the northern continent, a foe even Ur could only seal, was about to awaken after ten years—right before their eyes!
