It was just another day when Jett, the guy Kira could barely remember by name and just called "Speedy Lick-A-Lad," showed up at his door.
"You're saying you're gonna confess to Levy?" Kira asked, raising an eyebrow.
Jett's face turned beet red, and he huffed, practically shouting, "Yeah, exactly! You know Levy and I go way back. We grew up together—childhood friends, you could say. I've had a thing for her for ages!"
"Ohh, childhood friends, huh?" Kira muttered, shaking his head. Poor guy. Childhood friends never stand a chance against the fated love-at-first-sight types.
"So, why're you here bugging me? Want me to deliver a love letter or something?" Kira asked, genuinely curious. If you like her, just go for it, man. Why drag me into this?
Jett scratched the back of his neck, looking sheepish. "Well, I don't exactly have any experience with this stuff…"
And I do? Kira felt a sting of mockery—deeply personal mockery, at that. He had half a mind to slap Jett silly, kick him out, and yell, "Go ask Loke for this kind of thing!"
Jett stammered on, "Don't you always brag about having some awesome magical items? I was wondering if you had anything that could, you know…"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Kira cut him off, waving his hands. "This is a legit magic shop, buddy! I don't deal in those shady, novel-style 'love potions' or whatever you're thinking! Don't get any weird ideas, you Speedy Lick-A-Lad! You call yourself a Fairy Tail wizard with thoughts like that?"
Jett blinked, completely lost. "What? No, I meant, like, a gift! Something a girl might like!"
"Oh… that kind of thing," Kira said, rubbing his chin, a little disappointed. "Well, every girl's different, you know. Most of the stuff they like is pricey, though. And this is a magic shop, not a boutique!"
"Really?" Jett's shoulders slumped as he turned to leave. "I thought you'd have something perfect. I was ready to pay whatever it cost, too…"
Whoosh!
In a flash, Kira zipped in front of the door, blocking Jett's exit. "Hold it right there, Jett! I've got plenty of magical items girls would love!"
"But didn't you just say—"
"What I meant was, when it comes to gifting a wizard like Levy, nothing beats a magical item!" Kira declared, flipping the shop's sign to "CLOSED" and pulling Jett back inside. "Listen, brother, you came to the right guy. I'm Fairy Tail's info guru—nobody knows the guild better than me. I've got Levy's likes and dislikes down pat. If you've got the cash, I'll not only get you the perfect gift but set up a confession so epic it'll shake Magnolia!"
Jett's eyes sparkled with hope. "What is it? Tell me!" He grabbed Kira, shaking him in excitement. "If this works, I'll owe you big time!"
Kira leaned in, whispering, "Alright, here's the plan. We do this, and that, and then…"
"Will that really work?" Jett asked, nervous but eager.
"Trust me, it's got a solid shot!" Kira grinned.
The next day, Jett invited Levy to the library. Everyone in the guild knew Levy was a bookworm, so a regular date wouldn't cut it. Kira had suggested Jett use "wanting to read and learn magic" as an excuse to get her out.
For the occasion, Jett ditched his usual tacky denim coat and hat, got a fresh haircut, and splurged on new clothes. He looked sharp, confident it'd catch Levy's eye.
Pacing nervously in the grove near the girls' dorm, Jett waited for Levy. Meanwhile, Kira lurked behind a tree, keeping tabs.
"Alright, heads-up! Levy's coming out," Kira whispered into a magical earpiece he'd crafted with telepathy magic. It let him and Jett communicate secretly, though it only worked within Magnolia's range. To anyone else, the device on Jett's ear looked like a stylish earring.
"Morning, Levy!" Jett called, trying to sound casual, though his voice quavered.
Levy, clutching her Big Data Catalog (a magical device linked to the library's entire collection), looked every bit the studious bookworm. Thanks to Kira' gadgets, she could travel light to the library.
She tilted her head, noticing Jett's new look. "Jett, what's with the outfit today?"
"Oh, uh, just trying a new style, you know? Switching things up!" he said, flustered.
"It looks good! You seem more lively than usual," Levy said politely.
Jett's heart soared. She said I look good! She thinks I'm cool! Kira was right—this outfit was worth every jewel!
[Idiot! Don't make that creepy, lovesick face!] Kira' voice barked through the earpiece, snapping Jett back to reality.
"Where's Droy?" Levy asked, looking around for their other teammate.
"Oh, uh, Droy had something come up, so it's just us today!" Jett said quickly. No way was he letting Droy crash this. That guy's intentions were way too obvious.
"Okay, then," Levy said, unsuspecting, and started walking.
The library was on the west side of Magnolia, a bit of a trek from the guild. Levy hummed a cheerful tune as she led the way, clearly in a good mood—probably amused that her usually book-averse partner suddenly wanted to study. Jett trailed behind, too shy to walk beside her, stealing glances at her back and nervously scanning for familiar faces.
They didn't look like partners or a couple on a date—more like a noble lady and her awkward lackey.
Kira, blending into the crowd, groaned. Does this guy even realize this is his date?
[Walk beside her, you dolt! Why're you trailing like a lost puppy?] Kira hissed through the earpiece.
[Walk up there? But won't that be awkward…?] Jett whispered back.
[Awkward? You're trying to date her and you're worried about awkward?] Kira' voice dripped with exasperation.
[Just say something, anything!]
[Like what?]
Kira faltered. I don't know, man! I should've pawned this job off on Loke.
[Fine, ask her if she's thirsty, hungry, or tired. Show her your warm, caring side.]
[Got it!]
Inspired, Jett started bombarding Levy with questions: "You thirsty? Hungry? Tired? Wanna stop by that café?" He didn't let up, turning a 20-minute walk into a grueling interrogation.
By the time they reached the library, Levy bolted for the magic book section, clearly desperate to escape.
[Kira, what's going on? Levy seems upset!] Jett whispered, panicked.
[You were too much! I told you not to suggest stopping at a café—that's way too obvious!]
[But she looked annoyed while walking!]
[Then wait till you're done at the library! Your excuse was studying, remember?]
Clearly, neither of these love-newbies realized why Levy was actually irritated.
Time flew in the library, and soon it was lunchtime.
[Quick, grab the bento I made!] Kira ordered.
[On it!]
Under the curious stares of onlookers, a cloaked Kira ninja-dashed in, handed Jett a bento box, and vanished just as fast.
Jett approached Levy, who was deep in a book. "Levy, thanks for coming to the library with me today. I, uh, made this bento for you. I hope you like it," he said softly.
A few people overheard, turning to watch.
Levy looked up, caught off guard.
[Louder! Be sincere! You call that a confession?] Kira barked.
Jett's nerves spiked. He thrust the bento forward, shouting loud enough for the whole library to in, "Levy, please accept my bento!"
The library erupted in whispers and giggles. Levy's face turned scarlet.
"Jett, thank you, but…" She hesitated, head bowed, then mumbled, "I, um, already made plans with Lucy this afternoon. I gotta go…"
"Huh?"
"Sorry!" Levy grabbed her things and fled, leaving Jett frozen in embarrassment, slumping to the floor as the library's eyes bore into him.
